My Experience at HMT: A Day of Learning Beyond the Classrooms

Department of Commerce (UG), Kristu Jayanti College, Autonomous

As part of our curriculum at Kristu Jayanti College, Autonomous, our class had the opportunity to go on an industrial visit to HMT Limited and the HMT Heritage Centre and Museum in Jalahalli, Bengaluru. It was more than just a college trip—a day full of insights, real-world exposure, and appreciation for India’s industrial legacy.

A Closer Look at Manufacturing and Finance
Our first stop was HMT Limited, where we were warmly welcomed and taken through their manufacturing facility. We got to see how industrial components are made in the foundry and how precise models are prepared for further production.

One of the most interesting parts of the visit was the session with the Finance Manager, who explained how financial reports are prepared in such organizations and how the C&AG audits them. It was a practical angle to what we learned in our accounting and auditing classes.

Another expert explained the design verification process—from creating the design to matching it with ISI standards, approving it, and finally sending it for manufacturing. It was fascinating to see how each step is carefully monitored to ensure quality. We also learned that HMT operates mainly in the B2B sector and exports products to several countries.

Walking Through History at the HMT Museum
After the factory, we visited the HMT Heritage Centre and Museum. This place truly brought history alive. We saw various models of watches that once symbolized pride in Indian households. From Braille watches to flower clocks and the tools used in their production—it was like stepping into a timeline of innovation. The museum also showcased HMT’s work in machine tools and tractors, with detailed exhibits that showed how far Indian engineering has come. It made me realize the importance of preserving and learning from such history.

Take Away from the Visit:
This visit helped me connect the dots between what we study and how it’s applied in the real world. It gave me a better understanding of how industries function—not just in machines and manufacturing but also in finance, design, standards, and legacy.

I’m grateful to our department and class mentor, Dr. Surjit Singha, for organizing this visit. It truly was a day of learning, exploration, and inspiration.
