Self-Care: A Necessity Among the Studernts

“There are days I drop words of comfort on myself like falling leaves and remember that it is enough to be taken care of by myself.” ~Brian Andreas

You’re overwhelmed at college. You have a lot of projects piling up at home, and your calendar is packed with overdue tasks. To accomplish all your tasks, you skip lunch, stop going to the gym, stop playing your favourite sport and forget about your social life entirely. When we’re stressed, self-care is usually the first thing to go. And that only makes things worse.

Self-care is a disciple. It requires tough-mindedness, a deep and personal understanding of your priorities and respect for yourself and then that of others. But as fluffy and indulgent as the phrase “self-care” may sound, our mind is registered that it is just a few basic habits that are crucial to our functioning, but it's not.

Self-care isn’t as easy as it seems. As a college student, it can be hard to prioritize our own health, especially when we constantly hustle, and we are pushed to prioritize academics, work, and extracurricular.

Most of us grew up believing that the more you sacrifice, the bigger the reward. That is where the mistake sprouts from. Our society often take the phrase “hard work pays off” to the extreme that it becomes counterproductive. Your abilities are worn. Your skills aren’t as sharp. You lose focus. You might think you’re working hard, and maybe you are in some ways, but you’re not working efficiently.

So, how we take care of ourselves now determines our health in the future, which is why developing good self-care habits is important.

Health should be priority, a necessity. We are in our own self, a reflection of how we look after ourselves. In the long run, your hard work and achievements will not be worth half as much your health.

With all the tasks and pressures, you're dealing with; you are suffocating yourself with the pending piles in front of you. You tend to be more ignorant of what is happening to yourself or outside your cup of tea. The stress building up in your head and your body is more likely to lead you to depression. Yet another mistake!

Depression among the Youth
There are many reasons to why we lack self-care but are rather depressed. Nowadays, Social Media plays an important role in our life. We are using it to keep in touch with our family, relatives, friends and make some new friends. Besides that, we want to show the world what we are doing by means of sharing pictures or videos. But it has become more of an obsession. There are many and varied cases of people who are unconsciously suffering from dual personality disorders because of the impact the virtual world has.

Life today has turned into an endless race for everyone. In the quest of coming first and proving one's worth everyone has forgotten what truly matters. This endless rush is taking a toll on our lives. One's mental and physical wellbeing is more important than being successful or popular. Self-care is important because neglecting one's health comes with a bigger price than failing at studies or work. If one takes care of their physical and mental health, they can put in their full efforts into whatever purpose they are committed to. Instead of spending endless hours scrolling through the screen and comparing your life with that of others, make sometimes to reflect on your life, how blessed you are. Embarking on the path to success is a long one. Tread slowly if you must but never forget your well-being.
