Field visit to the National Gallery of Modern Art (Bengaluru) NGMA

Department of Media Studies organized a Field visit to the National Gallery of Modern Art (Bengaluru) NGMA for the students of Ⅱnd Semester Visual Communication on March 5th. The visit was planned with the goal of supporting the visual arts history course academically. All of the students participated actively in the tour and thoroughly enjoyed talking about the artwork at the museum. Mr. Koushik Chatterjee, the Technical Assistant for NGMA, conducted a brief session for the students. The field excursion was overseen by Ms. Prathvi Faculty Media Studies Department, and there were 50 students in all.
Field Visit
The students of V sem Journalism of Kristu Jayanti College had the distinct privilege of visiting Vijayavani and Star of Mysore on the 18 th , 19 th and 20th of
October, 2022. The students left campus at 5:30 AM and returned by 9:30 PM. Founded in 2012, Vijayavani is a Kannada newspaper published by VRL Group. The students were introduced to the printing process and the mechanism in which the machinery works. Photopolymer sheets that are used in printing were showcased and students had the opportunity to inspect the same. Mr. Shashidhar, the guide, has vast experience in the industry and was an excellent source of information and answered all questions patiently. The organization implements an offset printing/indirect printing process to gain superior quality print.
Star of Mysore was launched in 1978 and is an English evening daily newspaper published in Mysore, India. The students had the honor of meeting the Editor - K. B Ganapathy and visited the dark chamber as well. The editorial department was introduced and the students had the opportunity to see the printing process. Star of Mysore also incorporates offset/ indirect printing with slight variations to the one used at Vijayavani. The machinery has the ability to print 350 newspapers in a minute.
Learning Outcome: Through this industrial visit, the students had the opportunity of gaining first-hand knowledge of the mechanical aspect of how newspaper organizations run. This knowledge could help further their understanding of their syllabus. It also provides them with useful insight into the practicality and reality of the working field.

Places/Industry Visited: Jacaranda Tales, a film festival on women and nature organized by Bangalore Film Society in collaboration with the Bengaluru Sustainability Forum, Karnataka Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi, Gamana Women’s Collective, Gram Seva Sangh, G Foundation for Art and Culture and Kriti Film Club. The film festival was held at Gandhi Bhavan Auditorium, Kumara Park East, Bengaluru.
The IV semester BA Visual Communication students learned documentary making while visiting the Jacaranda Film Festival. The batch of students watched Surya Ganga, Narmada: A Valley Rises and Agar Who Desh Banati, followed by a panel discussion on Critique of Development by Bhargavi Rao, Madhu Bhushan and Du Saraswati. The three documentaries focused on social and environmental factors of the big energy projects in our country, the non-violent movement against the construction of the Sardar Sarovar dam on river Narmada and the lives of rural Adivasi women as the struggles of development becomes inevitable, respectively.

Name and details of any external agencies/contacts involved: Arena Animation Bangalore is the animation, web designing, VFX & multimedia education brand of Aptech Limited, with over 20 years of experience. The Academy gives practical training in 3D & 2D Animation, Web designing, Visual Effects, Graphic designing, broadcast and Multimedia around the world.
Mr Kumar M, the Director of Arena Animations introduced the students with various animation softwares. The students got to know about softwares like Maya, 3D Max, Adobe illustrator, Adobe Photoshop etc. Mr Kumar also showed the various movie clipping in which animation and VFX were used. Mr Kuamr said that “There is huge career opportunity for animations and visual graphics and students should take up this opportunity.”
The students were asked to enact different moves from famous movies in front of a green screen so that the students could understand the process of VFX and animation in-depth.
The second class was taken by Mr Amar, a faculty of Arena Animations who took an interactive session on graphic designing. He taught some graphic designing techniques that can be done in Adobe Photoshop. The class was very interesting and ended with a question answer session.
