A Summer Afternoon with French Art

The English Department started Campus Plus, as an effort to improve M.A. students' employment skills outside of their normal coursework. During the even semester, engaging Campus Plus talks were held on Mondays and Wednesdays. These classes were carefully designed to give students the tools they need to succeed in their vocations. The Campus Plus aims to inculcate students with practical skills and theoretical knowledge other than their academics, which promote their employability after their course of study. Students are invited to actively participate in Campus Plus's dynamic varieties, which fosters a friendly environment where ideas are shared and views are enriched. Each session, led by skilled English Department faculty members, was a dynamic fusion of technical know-how and soft skill development. Students were fully immersed in real-world learning experiences through engaging, practical activities. The participatory nature of the talks encouraged an atmosphere in which students felt comfortable sharing their thoughts and actively engaged with the topic.

Faculty members who were experts in various fields conducted each session, which covered a wide range of subjects such as Citation Protocols, Technical Writing, the Importance of Foreign Language Proficiency, Business English Communication, SWOT Analysis, and Effective Business Communication. These workshops sharpened students' employability skills and gave them priceless insights into industry trends, expectations, and requirements, equipping them with the knowledge and abilities they'll need to successfully navigate their future jobs. Campus Plus has become a vital tool for students getting ready for the working world.

The MA English students organised a captivating session titled "A Summer Afternoon with French Art" on February 28, 2024, aimed at delving into the richness and diversity of French art. Commencing with an insightful exploration of prominent French art movements such as Impressionism, Cubism, Surrealism, and Romanticism, participants engaged in interactive discussions and hands-on art appreciation activities, honing their observational skills and deepening their understanding of artistic techniques and symbolism. A presentation showcased masterpieces from renowned French artists like Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, and Henri Matisse, providing attendees with a firsthand experience of the vibrant world of French art.

Whimsical Wonders Unveiled: Lit-Con Carnivalesque at Kristu Jayanti College

The Department of English at Kristu Jayanti College, Autonomous, Bengaluru, transformed the mundane into the magical with their much-anticipated literary extravaganza, Lit-Con Carnivalesque. Held on 08 February 2024, this carnival-themed event delved deep into the diverse realms of literature, infusing whimsy and wonder into every corner. The Literary carnival was inaugurated by Fr. Dr. Augustine George, Principal, Kristu Jayanti College. He highlighted the impact of the event in molding future literary enthusiasts.

Lit-Con-Carnivalesque provided attendees with a platform to explore the intersections of literature, creativity, and imagination. The display included eleven literary themes such as Fairy Tales, Crime & Thriller, Science Fiction, Mythology, Love and Romance, War and Conflict, Film Adaptations, Gothic Fiction, and Animation.

The day-long Carnivalesque offered interactive experiences such as games inspired by literature, providing attendees with opportunities to connect with their favorite literary works and adaptations. Embracing the carnivalesque theme, students showcased their creativity by dressing up as their favorite literary characters, dazzling the crowd with their imaginative costumes and lively interaction. First prize was bagged by VI PYEN, second prize was shared between VI Eng Literature and IV English Literature. Third prize was won by VI PYEN B respectively.

The Poets League-Beyond the Armour

In celebration of International Men’s Day, the Department of English at Kristu Jayanti College organised The Poets League, focusing on the theme “Beyond the Armor.” The event explored the complexities of masculinity, encouraging meaningful conversations through poetry. The poets presented thought-provoking pieces that addressed themes such as societal expectations, emotional resilience, the unspoken struggles of men, and the importance of vulnerability. Through vivid imagery and heartfelt expressions, the poems highlighted the influence of fathers, the quiet heroism of everyday men, and the delicate balance between strength and sensitivity. The session concluded with a Vote of Thanks, acknowledging the support and encouragement of the Department and the active participation of the audience. The Poets League successfully provided a platform to challenge stereotypes and celebrate the multifaceted experiences of men, fostering a deeper understanding of masculinity through the power of poetry.


The Poets League – Forging New Paths (Edition 16)

On October 8, 2024, the Department of English organised The Poets League, an engaging event that brought together creative and talented poets to celebrate the theme “Celebrating Cultures.” The event invited participants to explore diverse cultural perspectives through poetry.The first poem, “To My Mentor,” was presented by Rachana, expressing admiration, gratitude, and the profound influence a mentor has on personal growth. This was followed by Amisha’s “Friendship,” which explored themes of trust, mutual support, shared experiences, and deep personal connections.Shirley captivated the audience with her poem “Goa,” painting a vibrant picture of the state’s cultural richness, scenic beauty, and coastal charm. Next, Kratika presented “Birthday,” a reflective piece on gratitude, self-reflection, and the passage of time. Ekta followed with “A Friend of Mine,” celebrating the importance of friendship.Sonjukta’s poem, “Pujo in October,” brought festive energy to the event, reflecting on the joy and cultural significance of Durga Puja. The final poem was presented by Dr. Krishnaprabha, who shared her insightful reflections through a moving piece. The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Amos Rudhay, acknowledging the invaluable support of the Head of the Department, Fr. Joshy Matthew, the PG Coordinator, Dr. Lyola Thomas, the UG Coordinator, Prof. Jerrin Jose, faculty in-charges Dr. Arsha Subbi and Dr. Krishnaprabha, the participants, and the audience. The Poets League successfully fostered a vibrant literary community, where voices from diverse backgrounds came together to celebrate the beauty and power of poetry.

On August 23, 2024, the Department of English hosted 'The Poets League,' a vibrant event centered around the theme "Forging New Paths”. Jeremy Daniel R.’s poem “Ramblings” kicked off the event, exploring the musings of a madman with philosophical insights. Other notable poems included Megha Barua’s “Who Is She,” Mebakynsai Mawksiar’s “The Reality in You,” and Udayashree’s “The Everlasting Hope,” which touched on love, heartbreak, and resilience. The event successfully fostered a community of literary enthusiasts, bringing together diverse voices to celebrate poetry. 'The Poets League' not only showcased the talent within the college but also inspired participants to explore new creative pathways in their poetic journeys.


The Poets League
On the 12th of April, 2024, the Department of English orchestrated a momentous occasion, gathering together the community's most creative and talented poets under the banner of 'The Poets League.' This carefully curated event was not merely a gathering but a celebration—a homage to the timeless artistry of romantic poetry, reimagined through the lens of modern expression. Serving as master of ceremony was Anju Anil from the I MA English Literature program, who gracefully steered the proceedings. Poetry enthusiasts from various departments gathered to share their poetic creations, reflecting a diverse range of perspectives and themes. The majority of the presentations centered around the themes of romanticism and love. As the event drew to a close, Fr.Joshy Mathew, Head of the Department encouraged and appreciated the students for their active participation and enthusiasm. This event not only celebrated the art of poetry but also underscored its power to unite, inspire, and transcend boundaries, reaffirming its timeless relevance in our lives.


The Poets League
On the 23rd of 2024, the Department of English organized "The Poets League," a gathering of creative and talented poets. Centered around the theme "My Phoenix Soul Soaring Beyond Boundaries," the event celebrated the art of poetry. MCs Shombit Das and Sanjukta Chatterjee from I MA English Literature set the tone for the event. Poets from various departments showcased their poetic prowess, with many exploring themes of life and human emotions. The event emphasized the diverse voices and creative expressions present among the student body. It served as a platform for students to share their thoughts and emotions through the beauty of language. The evening concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Amos Rudhay from I MA English Literature, marking the event's success in fostering connection and appreciation for the spoken word.


The Poets League
The Department of English hosted the 13th Edition of Poets League, a creative platform for students. Held on March 6, 2024, the event, featured Anju Teresa Anil as the emcee and Amos Rudhay delivering the welcome speech. Under the theme "Verses Veiled in Shadows," students showcased their poetic talents, joined by peers from various departments. The poetry recital session highlighted the enduring power of poetry as a means of expression and connection. Drawing inspiration from personal experiences, nature, social issues, and philosophy, the diverse range of poetry enriched the artistic landscape. As the event concluded with a Vote of Thanks from Shombit Das, it underscored the universal appeal of poetry and its ability to resonate with different perspectives.

Turn a Leaf: Readers’ Corner

The Department of English organised “Turn a Leaf” for the students of III semester BA English Literature on 14th November 2024. Four students from the class selected J.M. Coetzee short story "The Museum Guard". The event featured interactive activities that engaged participants in exploring the story’s themes and literary elements. These collaborative exercises aimed to enhance reading comprehension while fostering critical thinking and teamwork. By blending analysis with enjoyment, the event successfully created an enriching experience that encouraged participants to engage deeply with literature and develop their reading skills in a dynamic environment.


Readers’ Gallery

The Department of English organized Readers’ Gallery, a skill enhancement program for the I & III rd. semester MA English Language and Literature students on 13th November 2024 from 02.40 pm to 03:30 pm at Chavara Square Humanities Block, Kristu Jayanti College. The event occurred in the presence of Dr. I. Stephen, Dr. A. Kanimozhi, and Ms. Gowrikrishna Sajikumar, faculty coordinators of the readers' gallery. The Book discussed was One part woman by Perumal Murugan which holds a great deal of significance in the realms of Gender, Identity,Concept of successful marriages, Infertility and society’s pressure and take on it and so on. Aparna K started the session talking about the author. Anagha Mathew went through a detailed summary. Abhinand Sunny Mathew took the audience to themes and analysis. Bijina Ann Varghese took the discussion and relevant aspects of the book where most of the students also gave their opinion on the book and its relevance in the society.The discussion of the novel continued as students discussed the events and happenings in the novel concerning the current scenario such as gender issues and conflict in identity and role in society. An interesting and engaging game was conducted by Agna Ellizabeth I MA English. The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Isha Parvatiyar of II MA English.


Readers’ Gallery

The fourth year of the Readers Gallery was commenced with a session on 18th September. The session was coordinated by Isha Parvatiyar, second year MA student. The session was held in the Turf, Kristu Jayanti College from 2:40 pm to 3:30 pm. Firstly, the students detailed the introduction to the context followed by a summary and a brief thematic study of Kiran Desai’s The Inheritance of Lost. Dr Stephen shared his thoughts on the significant role Readers Gallery on literature students, as it will provide more insights into the diverse book genres that are not just limited to their curriculum.

After the first part of the session, the student of II MA Shombit conducted a game session, where he successfully kept the audience engaged and active. The session ensured the maximum level of interaction from both the I and II MA English Literature Students.


Readers’ Gallery

The Department of English organised Readers’ Gallery, a skill enhancement programme for the II & IV semester MA English students on 17 April 2024 from 03:30 pm to 04:30 pm at H107, Kristu Jayanti College. The group introduced the book “The Overstory” by Richard Powers who is a winner of Pulitzer Prize. The novel is 12th novel of the author which deals with the themes of deforestation, hope, human nature, time, etc. Sruthi K M, roll no 41, introduced the author who is also known for the works such as The Echo Maker. The book was introduced by Nivedita S Raju and she provided the background of the work. Rebecca Lalmalsawmi (Roll no 35), gave a brief summary of the novel without diving deep into the work. Sriram Kumar V (Roll No 40), gave an analysis of the work whereas Sagarika U K (Roll No 37) dealt with the themes that are important things that prose great dangers to the environment in today’s time. By the end of the session, a discussion of the book and its themes. The student coordinators then led game time by providing quotes and guessing characters and by displaying a series of pictures to guess the book.

The Readers’ Gallery event held on 21 February 2024 celebrated the profound impact of literature through a discussion centred on Alice Walker's "The Colour Purple." Attendees were, II MA and IV MA English literature students. They delved into the novel's themes of resilience and empowerment, connecting deeply with its characters and narrative. Beyond literary exploration, the event fostered a sense of community and gave the opportunity to delve deeper into the world of fiction. It also ignited a love for reading and learning, inspiring all the present attendees to continue exploring diverse literary works. Ultimately, the event was a resounding success, highlighting the transformative power of storytelling to inspire, educate, and unite individuals.

The college and its offices will remain closed from 23rd to 25th December 2024 due to end-semester vacation. |
