"Debating the Past for the Future" - A workshop on the Art of Debating
“The Department of History organized a Workshop titled “Debating the Past for the Future” on the Art of Debating on 07/12/19. Mr Aaron Mirza, an advocate by profession and a national level debating champion was invited to train the students to enhance their debating skills and to introduce them to the importance of public speaking with a strong hold of history which will allow the speaker to have a strengthen base of his or her argument in augmenting a positive future. The speaker also strongly advised the students to involve themselves in various activities like intercollegiate debates and MUN, this, he emphasized, will expose the students to the different ideologies, opinions and understanding of individuals which will eventually allow them to be informed speakers.

During the session, the students were divided into groups and were given a platform to reinvent historical ideas and re-establish the relevance of these ideas. They were provided with worksheets to work on their usage of language in advancing their ideas in a debate or a public speaking forum. The groups were then exposed to glimpse of MUN, where the groups were given countries and various agendas like the plight of refugees, terrorism, rape, drug abuse and climate change keeping in mind the debate to be done on a historical basis.”

"Situating the Relevance of Manuscripts in History Writing"
“The Department of History in association with the National Institute of Prakrit Studies, Sravanabelagola organized a workshop titled “Situating the Relevance of Manuscripts in History Writing” on 06/12/19 for the IV and VI BA HEP students. The workshop started with an introduction to Manuscript writing and the formation of these manuscripts before the writings were inscribed. The students received first hand information and a demonstrative explanation as to how these manuscripts are made ready for inscribing the information. They were also explained of the various tools used in inscribing. The students were then informed about the importance of preserving manuscripts and their relevance in decoding ancient cultures and heritage. The students were also encouraged to find a passion in manuscripts as their profession for it is extremely valuable and a noble work. The students got an opportunity to interact with faculties and researchers of the institute.”

Workshop on ‘Mapping, Visual Storytelling, Trust, Verification, Digital Safety and Security for Journalists’

The department of Journalism and Mass communication in association with Google News Lab organized a workshop on the topic ‘Mapping, Visual Storytelling, Trust, Verification, Digital Safety and Security for Journalists’ on September 27, 2019 for the MA JMC students. This workshop aimed at providing hands on training on the techniques of visual storytelling, verification of images and audio-video files and data safety and security. Ms. Geetika Rustagi, Teaching Fellow at Google News Lab was the resource person for the workshop.

The workshop started off with an inclusive game of finding the fake news from the real ones. Faculty and students were put to test. The game not only helped energize the students but also helped one understand the need to filter authentic content from the rest.

Various methods to filter out authentic content were taught. From images to videos, the students learned various fact checking platforms on the web and how to use them to their benefit. The workshop was primarily focused on teaching the students to perform fact checks by themselves.

Broader topics like verification and digital safety were dealt with extensively. Not only did the students learn methods to secure their online activity but also learned why it is so important.

Each topic was dealt with in a way that its relevance was communicated properly so the students knew exactly how and where to apply the acquired knowledge. The faculty too actively involved in the workshop, learning with the students.

“The workshop was very insightful and as a journalism student, this increased our capacity to fact check, verify content and bridge the gap between what would be expected in a newsroom and what we learn in a classroom”, says Nisha Jain, a student from III semester MA MJC.

Workshop on ‘Fundamentals in Researching with Precision, Investigative, Data Journalism and Data Visualization’

The department of Journalism and Mass communication in association with Google News Lab organized a workshop on the topic ‘Fundamentals of Researching with Precision, Investigative and Data Journalism’ on September 26, 2019 for the MA JMC students. This workshop aimed at providing training to the young journalists in the areas of emerging technologies for reporting and storytelling. Ms. Geetika Rustagi, Teaching Fellow at Google News Lab was the resource person for the workshop.

During her session Ms. Geetika focused on detailing and providing a hands on experience on Google’s tools to help in news gathering, discovering new trends in search, finding useful datasets, and getting a better understanding of how Google Search works. She also explained and provided a practical understanding of how to analyze, interpret and visualize data using Google Spreadsheet and Flourish.

Workshop on Early Indian Scripts- Ashokan Brahmi by Mr. Gautam Jantakal

1. Mr. Gautham Jantakal, Numismatics Consultant, Centre for Numismatic Studies, Bangalore
Objective: To make students aware of the significance of ancient Indian scripts such as Ashokan Brahmi and help them to comprehend its significance in reconstructing historical narratives.
Session I: Theorizing on the concepts of Language and Scripts.
The resource person started the workshop with a theorizing session on the basics of Language and Scripts. The students were made aware of the fundamental features and characteristics of languages and scripts and thus they were able to differentiate between the two. Mr. Jantakal also pointed out the examples of ancient Indian languages such as Pralrit, Pali and Sanskrit and Indian scripts such as Indus, Brahmi, Kharosthi and Greek.
The evolution of writing systems from pictures, pictograms, ideograms and phonograms were also explained. Mr. Jantakal thereafter proceeded to discuss the evolution of the Ashokan Brahmi Script.

Session II: Technical Session
Students in this session were taught to identify the basic and elementary Ashokan Brahmi alphabets. They were also made to identify and transliterate simple words written in the Brahmi script.

Workshop- Social Media Strategic Plan Preparation

A workshop Social Media Strategic Plan Preparation was organized by the Department of Journalism & Mass Communication at the Kristu Jayanti College on 30th August 2017. The workshop was handled by Mrs. Amulya Nagaraj, the Associate Director of Pepper Interactive Communication, Bangalore.She spoke about social media extensively under the purview of its usage as a tool for promotion and branding. She spoke about the effective approaches towards attaining a good brand image through the usage of social media and its tools. She also spoke about the need of a clear strategic plan to deal with these platforms and the basics of it. The event also featured an interactive session.

WORKSHOP- “Workshop on Art History"

Art History is study of Human Expression –Visual, but also Tactile, Spatial and Sometimes aural –through History. Art Historians develop ways to translate from the visual to the verbal, through analysis and interpretation, using a number of different approaches and methodologies. The session provided hands on opportunity to understand Art as important element to analyse the Historical Study. The dynamisms of Art belonging to Early Ancient period, Italian Renaissance painting, and contemporary Modern art was stimulating to new generation learners towards the new trends of studying History.

WRITING FOR NEWSPAPERS (WORKSHOP)
Title: Workshop on Writing for Newspapers – Professional Perspectives

A workshop on ‘Writing for newspapers’ was conducted on 26 July, 2017, Wednesday in Kristu Jayanti College, Conference Hall at 10:00 AM. Mr. B. Pradeep Nair, News Editor, The Hindu, started the session with a general overview of present day generations reading habits and the need for a writer to understand the reader’s mind. He also shared the strengths and weakness of both television and print media. He taught the students, how is writing for newspapers differ from writing an essay/story. Few tips were given on different types of writing for newspapers and different steps in writing newspaper articles. ‘Constant reading is good to train yourself. Like Usain Bolt preparing himself for the final match you have to train your own mind for that skill to come naturally,’ said Mr. B. Pradeep Nair. The session was engrossing and helped students to know more in-depth on certain ethics and practices. Students made the session two-way interactive by asking questions and sharing experiences related to the topic.

TELEVISION PRODUCTION (WORKSHOP)
Title: Television News Production

A ‘television news production workshop’ was organized by the department of Journalism and Mass Communication on July 24th 2017, Monday in Kristu Jayanti College, P G Conference Hall – II at 9.30 am. The workshop was conducted by Prof. T. Sripathy, Department of Electronic Media in Bangalore University. Prof. T. Sripathy dealt with many topics such as interviews, studio and much more. He explained to the students on how to prepare for interviews and how they must formulate questions and elicit the required information. “When you write something you should consider your mother to be your first audience” advised Dr. T. Sripathy. He enriched the students with experiences from his career and showed them videos and had an interactive session. The workshop had both theory and practical – students were made groups and told to produce a program. They took shoot on the topic, edited and played for correction. “It was a firsthand experience in producing a television program on our own with scripting, interviewing, etc. and finally editing was a good experience”, said Divya K S, I semester MA JMC student. “I would like to get an idea of what this course has for me and I want to know more about media” said Ipshita Guha a first year MA JMC student when asked what she expected from this course.

POETRY WORKSHOP
The Society of Poets under the Department of English conducted a poetry workshop on July 29, 2016, in association with the Airplane poetry movement. The workshop, coordinated by the Dept. of English, was held in Mini Auditorium II. The event which started at 10:30 AM was the first of its kind to be hosted in Kristu Jayanti College. The programme was administered by co-founders of the Airplane Poetry Movement, Nandini Varma and Shantanu Anand.Slam poetry according to Shantanu Anand, is a written work to be performed on stage. They tackled the issue of stage fright and brought out the depth of poetry slam by providing five useful tips which are, the five second rule of doing nothing, keeping your feet still, making meaningful eye contact, enunciate each and every word and finally giving meaningful pauses while ending the poem. Activities conducted brought out the inner poets on the stage. As an example of poetry slam, Shantanu Anand astounded the audience with his own poem, "Cynicism in Salesman".

Workshop on ‘Role of Manuscripts in History’
As part of youth week celebrations 2017, NSS unit of the college in collaboration with the Dept. of History organized a workshop on “Preservation of Palm leaf Manuscripts” on January 18, 2017. It is one of the oldest medium of writing in India especially in Southern India. Indian Manuscripts are the richest collection of written documents, texts and scripts. These written documents provide information on the existence of different civilizations and emphasize the importance of their survival.

The manuscripts are vital Sources of History of India. A manuscript is a handwritten composition on paper, bark, cloth, metal, palm leaf or any other material. They reflect the magnificence of the Indian civilization including languages, philosophy, art and architecture. The Workshop focused on providing information about preparation, use and preservation Palm leaf manuscripts. Steps regarding preparation of Palm leaves, boiling the leaves, drying and polishing for writing or painting were explained.

Report on the mock election –February 2015
On 10th February 2015, the department of political science, Kristu Jayanti College, has conducted a mock election for the students of political science BA HEP and JPSENG at mini auditorium 1.the activity was conducted during the political science club hour of the week and 110 students participated in the activity. Workshop on introduction to Indian archaeology on 2nd December 2014 the theme for the workshop was ancient Indian literature and epigraphy. It was aimed to help the participants understand the vast plethora of data available in India’s past , and guide them through scientific methodology to collect and interpret data in a manner that enhances their experience of Indian past. In this workshop, we will explore the role of oral history, and learn how to derive information from written sources of ancient India

Report on staging of OTHELLO
It is sometimes disheartening to realize that we in the mad rush of our mundane existence forget to look beyond what we see through our naked eyes. We ignore the culture that we share. We forget the history that we share. But such is not the case in kristu Jayanti College. Culture and history of humanities is cherished very dearly at kristu Jayanti College, with this outlook the department of English, staged the enactment of the thrilling Shakespearean play, the tragedy of OTHELLO, on the 11th march 2015. The play was organised in partnership with “yours truly theatre, a theatre firm headed by director Renji David.

One day symposium on the confused young Indians
The Public Relations Council of India in collaboration with the Young Communicators Club organized a one day symposium on ‘The Confused Young Indians’. The event took place on the 3 August, 2013 at the Capitol Hotel, Bangalore. This event had panelists engaged the crowd of students of various colleges on their take of how confused or less confused are the present generation of young Indians. It was a bit of surprise to see that most of the members on the panel board were actually of the view that the present young generation isn’t confused but rather left with so many choices in front of them that they have a hard time choosing a right path in their lives.

Theatre workshop
The Erudite club from the humanities department of Kristu Jayanti College organized a three day theatre workshop from 21 to 24 August 2013. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Prasad, a professional dramatist, closely associated with Ranga Shankara, a well known theatre at Bangalore.

Mr Prasad made the students understand that drama is not merely the enactment of a story, but the involvement of the audience in the story and making them feel that they are a part of that story.
