Orientation On OBE 2.0 Practices

The Department of Economics conducted an orientation session on "Outcome-Based Education (OBE) 2.0" for its faculty members, aiming to familiarize them with the principles, framework, and implementation strategies of the updated OBE model. This session reflects the department’s commitment to enhancing the academic quality and learning outcomes in alignment with the broader goals of contemporary higher education. Emphasis was placed on creating measurable, relevant, and achievable learning outcomes tailored to students’ evolving needs and the demands of the modern job market. Dr. K. Vinodha Devi, OBE Committee member began the session with an introduction to the principles of OBE, covering key areas such as curriculum design, assessment methods, and continuous quality improvement. The session highlighted how OBE 2.0 places the learner at the center of the educational process, with faculty roles adapting to facilitators of learning. Faculty were encouraged to integrate technology in assessment and leverage student feedback to refine instructional approaches continuously. Discussions also focused on the importance of aligning program outcomes with real-world applications, thereby enhancing students’ employability and life skills. The orientation on OBE 2.0 successfully provided faculty members with a comprehensive understanding of the updated framework, equipping them with the knowledge and tools needed to implement outcome-based strategies in their teaching practices. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A, allowing faculty to discuss challenges and explore potential applications of OBE 2.0 within their courses.


Panel Discussion on People, Planet, And Peace: Navigating The Tensions Between Economic Growth And Sustainability

In commemoration of United Nations Day, the Department of Economics organized a panel discussion on the theme "People, Planet, and Peace: Navigating the Tensions between Economic Growth and Sustainability" for the students of I BA Applied Economics. The event took place on 24th October 2024, from 12:00 PM to 12:50 PM, at H1 Auditorium in the Humanities Block. The panel comprised six student panelist from I BA Applied Economics. Each panelist brought a unique perspective on the intersection of people, planet, and peace, fostering an interdisciplinary approach to the discussion. The panel opened with a discussion on the inherent conflicts between economic expansion and the need for sustainable resource use. Panelists highlighted the consequences of unchecked industrialization and the importance of transitioning to greener economic models. A significant portion of the discussion focused on the role of global institutions, particularly the United Nations, in promoting sustainability through policy frameworks like the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The discussion was followed by a lively question-and-answer session where students engaged with panelists on various issues, such as the feasibility of implementing green policies in developing nations, the economic costs of transitioning to sustainable energy, and the role of government regulations in balancing development and environmental protection. The panel discussion concluded with a strong emphasis on the urgency of rethinking economic models to include sustainability at their core. It reinforced the idea that economic growth should not come at the expense of the planet and that achieving peace is impossible without considering environmental and social justice. The event successfully provided students with a nuanced understanding of the complexities involved in balancing economic development with sustainability goals.


UGC-NET ORIENTATION
Date: 18 October 2024
The Department of Economics, in collaboration with the Centre for UGC-NET and CSIR NET/JRF Training, organized an orientation session specifically for the I M.Sc Economics students on the 18th of October, 2024. The primary objective of this session was to introduce students to the UGC-NET (University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test) examination process, highlight its importance, and provide strategies for preparing for the test early in their academic journey. The session was structured to ensure that students received a comprehensive overview of the UGC-NET exam. Dr. Vinodha Devi emphasized the significance of the UGC-NET exam for aspiring academicians. She explained how the Centre will provide training for both paper I and Paper II to enhance students' career prospects in higher education, research, and even government jobs.

Dr. Vinodha Devi shared useful strategies for exam preparation, such as:
• Creating a study timetable and sticking to it.
• The importance of solving previous years' question papers and mock tests.
• Group discussions and peer learning to clear doubts and strengthen knowledge.
• Time management and maintaining consistency in preparation.
During the interactive segment of the session, students actively participated by asking various questions regarding the examination process, preparation challenges, and future career prospects after qualifying UGC-NET. Dr. Vinodha Devi addressed each query in detail, providing tailored advice and registration link to the students.


Panel Discussion on Nobel Laureates in Economic Sciences 2024

A panel discussion session was held by the Department of Economics at Kristu Jayanti College in venue H503, on 15th October 2024, from 12 PM to 12.50 PM. The student panellists were Hruday Raj, Shawna John, Mohit L Kapse (all MA 2nd year), and Akshara R Nair, Gaurika D, and Parvathy (all MSc 1st year), along with professors from the department. The discussion centred on the 2024 Nobel Prize winners in Economics, Prof. Daron Acemoglu, Prof. Simon Johnson, and Prof. James A. Robinson. Key topics included the impact of laws and policies on underdeveloped countries, the role of governments and political leaders in shaping economic development, and the lasting effects of British colonization. The panel also explored how resistance to colonization influenced development, and how inclusive and extractive institutions have shaped India’s growth. The session concluded with a Q&A between the professors and panellists, deepening the analysis of these influential economists' work

Panel Discussion -Economics Club

The Panel discussion has been organised for BA Applied Economics Students on 24th September 2024 titled “Impact of Geopolitical Tension on Global Trade”. 7 Panellists were finalised after 2 rounds of screening with different topics and current issues from Classes of 1st year, 2nd year and 3rd year of BA Applied Economics. This discussion was moderated by 1st year MA Economics students, the finalist came up with a different paper presentation and varied knowledge about the world trade, various geopolitical tensions and the impact of it on the world’s economy.

The moderators started off the session with the set of instructions to be followed the timing of each finalist and other rules to be followed Each participant provided a brief information on geopolitical issues, factors determining it, the driving forces of the economy, how different countries tackle those issues, various ongoing tensions, conflicts, role of various International Bodies and Organizations, various policies and how it differs the relationship between countries around the world, impact on global trade, effects on consumer and producer market, possible solutions and outcomes.

The major and most discussed topic was the Israel and Palestine conflict-genocide, its impact on world relations, mankind concerns and worldwide tensions. Following it was the Russia and Ukraine war which made a huge political disruption, worldwide chaos, imbalanced economic growth lack of assistance and aid from international bodies, how to tackle and suggested potential solutions for resolution.

The participants gave an overview the moderators asked them questions based on their research and knowledge. The panellists were allowed to counter question each other’s diplomatic and debating skills.

The panel discussion concluded with informative insights by the moderators who gave suggestions, various overviews and reviews.


Economics Club Inauguration

The Economics club is a vibrant community of future thinkers and amazing BA Economics students gathered around to discuss learn and grow. The Club was inaugurated on- 24/09/2024 by the esteemed Chief guests Mr. Nigel John, Head of Talent Acquisition Withum smith- Brown LLP, Bangalore and Mr. Shambu Reddy, Audit Senior Manager at Withum, and the esteemed dignitaries Dr. Sivasubramanian K Head of the department, Mrs. Preethi Sebastian Faculty Coordinator of the Club and secretaries of the economic Club Mr. Dhreethimon Atreeya and Ms. Ayman Fathima

The chief guests were acknowledged with a moment of appreciation and token of love by the dignitaries by giving a sapling and a memento.

Mr. Nigel John welcomed the gathering and addressed the inaugural session, he gave his insights over how as students we admire and desire for greater things but forget to value those smaller and beautiful moments that make us stronger day by day and also spoke about various opportunities and how the student community can grow. Mr. John referred the book, ‘From Good to Great’ by James C Collins which stands as inspiration to all. Mr.Nigel shared the essentiality of become good to great from the book.Mr. Shambu Reddy also shared his experience and wished students the best for their future.


Alumni Expert Talk on "Transition from Campus to Corporate"

The Department of Economics at Kristu Jayanti College has organized an Alumni Lecture Series titled "Transition from Campus to Corporate," specifically tailored for both undergraduate and postgraduate Economics students. This event aims to help students navigate their forthcoming transition from academic life to professional settings. The lecture will be delivered by Mr. Shalu K S, a Data Process Analyst from Target Corporation and an alumnus of the MA Economics batch of 2017-19. Lecture took place on 20th of September, 2024, at 9 am, in the Conference Hall P1, PG Block of the college.


Students Discussion on Technology in Economic Development Through Socratic Method

The Department of Economics organised a student-led classroom discussion on the topic of “Technology in Economic Development Through Socratic Method”. The session took place on 26th August 2024, from 12 PM to 12:50 PM, with 56 students from the I Semester BSc (Computer Science, Statistics, Economics) program. The discussion was structured around presentations by five different groups such as A, B, C, D, & E, each focusing on distinct thoughts relating to the role of technology in agriculture, labour, industry, people and their potential applications in today's economic scenario. All the students actively participated in the discussion with solid points in favour and against the technological adoption in economic development. The discussion was completed with the question and answering session among the students in various groups.


Students Discussion on Ancient Economic Ideas and Its Relevance in Modern Economy

The Department of Economics organised a student-led discussion on the topic of “Ancient Economic Ideas and Its Relevance in the Modern Economy” through the ‘Think-Pair-Share’ method. The session took place on 26th August 2024, from 12:00 PM to 12:50 PM, with 48 students from the V Semester BA Applied Economics program participating. The discussion was structured around presentations by four different groups, each focusing on distinct ancient economic concepts and their potential applications in today's economic scene. All the students actively participated in the discussion with solid points and criticised other views as well. The discussion was completed with the question and answering session among the students in various groups.


The Three-Day Workshop "Aptitude Alchemists 2.0"
Date: 21, 22 & 23 August 2024
Department of Economics organized a three-day workshop "Aptitude Alchemists 2.0" on the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd of August 2024 from 9.00 am to 5.00 PM. The students were highly engaged and enthusiastic throughout the workshop. Mr. Dennis Jose, with his expertise in aptitude training, created a stimulating and interactive learning environment. The workshop covered various aptitude topics, including quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, and verbal ability. Students were given ample practice exercises and opportunities to apply the concepts they learned.

Value Added Course on Application of ChatGPT in Economics

Value Added Course on Application of ChatGPT in Economics

The course took place from the 8th to the 13th of August 2024 in Room H503. The VAC aimed to explore the innovative uses of ChatGPT, an advanced AI language model, in the field of economics. The course provided hands-on experience and insights into how ChatGPT can be utilized for economic analysis, research, and education. Through interactive sessions, students learned to apply AI technology in various economic scenarios, enhancing their understanding and skills in this rapidly evolving area. The course was well-received by the students, who appreciated the opportunity to engage with cutting-edge technology and its applications in economics. "Viksit Bharat 2047 - Student Economics Summit"

The Department of Economics Organized "Viksit Bharat 2047 - Student Economics Summit" in commemoration of the 78th Independence Day, on August 14, 2024. The summit was organised specifically for the students of III MA Economics and I M.Sc. Economics. The event commenced at 1:40 pm, with the central theme focusing on envisioning a developed India by the year 2047. The summit provided a platform for students to explore and discuss the economic strategies and policies that could shape the future of India as a leading global economy. Students actively participated in the discussions, showcasing their insights and innovative ideas for India's economic growth and development. The summit also highlighted the importance of the role that the upcoming generation of economists will play in realizing this vision. The event not only celebrated India's independence but also served as a call to action for students to contribute to the nation's future prosperity.


Anti - Ragging week
Date: 14 August 2024
Department of Economics organized an observance of Anti-Ragging awareness week with Special lecture titled “The power of peer support: A ragging free campus” on 14th august 2024 at 1.40 to 2.30 pm. Prof. Mary Sadhana Abraham, Faculty Member, Kristu Jayanti College of Law o-Bengaluru, graced this occasion as a resource person.. The event aimed to raise awareness about the issue of ragging, its detrimental effects, and the crucial role of peer support in preventing it. The special talk began with a comprehensive overview of ragging, its various forms, and the psychological and emotional impacts. The speaker mentioned that ragging often starts at home. The speaker highlighted the importance of anti-ragging cells in institutions and the peer support in creating a safe and inclusive campus. The speaker conveyed that cyberbullying could be seen as the modern extension of ragging. The lecture was a significant step towards combating ragging and fostering a respectful academic environment. Both PG classes & BA Applied Economics classes witnessed the event.


Union Budget 2024 Quiz for Economics Students

Value-Added Course on Economics of E-Governance
Date: 02 to 09 August 2024
The Department of Economics organized a Value-Added Course (VAC) for I BA Applied Economics on the topic "Economics of E-Governance" from 2nd August 2024 to 9th August 2024. This course aimed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the role of electronic governance (e-governance) in modern economies. The primary objectives of the course are to introduce the students to the fundamental concepts of e-governance, including its scope, objectives, and various models and also to explore how e-governance influences economic factors such as efficiency, transparency, and cost reduction in government operations. The course was structured into various modules, each focusing on a different aspect of e-governance. Students gained a comprehensive understanding of how e-governance can be leveraged to improve economic outcomes and governance practices. The course received positive feedback for its content, delivery, and the quality of discussions.


Value Added Course on Fundamentals of Research and Academic Publishing

The Department of Economics organized a value-added course titled “Fundamentals of Research and Academic Publishing." This course was designed for V Semester BA Applied Economics and JOEC students and was conducted from July 24th to July 29th, 2024. The course aimed to equip students with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to conduct effective research and successfully disseminate their findings through academic publications. This involves understanding the research process, mastering research methodologies, and acquiring proficiency in preparing and submitting scholarly work for publication.


Value Added Course on Economics and Finance
Date: 25 to 29 July 2024
Department of Economics Organized Value added Course titled Economics and Finance for III Semester MA Economics students from 25th July 2024 to 29th July 2024. This course provides the details of financial Market, operational process, pros and cons of this market, impact on Economy and so on. Department of Economics also provides the opportunity to Master students to apply the concept and find the solution in the form of case study analysis. This particular course also throws light on Global Economic Crisis and European Debt Crisis and how the PIIGS (Portugal , Italy , Ireland , Greece and Spain ) was the reason behind the economy crisis. The course ends with assessment in order to evaluate the course outcome.

The Department of Economics organized Student Discussion on RBI@90 - Monetary policy Review as part celebrating RBIs 90-year anniversary for I MA Economics student on April 10, 2024. The discussion aimed to analyse the implications of the monetary policy decisions on the economy, financial markets, and various stakeholders. The student discussion on the RBI@90 monetary policy review provided valuable insights into the implications of central bank decisions on the economy and financial markets. Through rigorous analysis and debate, participants gained a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between monetary policy, economic fundamentals, and policy communication. The discussion underscored the importance of informed dialogue in shaping perspectives on macroeconomic policy and fostering a deeper appreciation for the nuances of monetary policymaking. The discussion also covered RBI's most recent rate adjustment which was intended to reduce economic risks while maintaining the declining economic conditions in view. The discussion concluded with the statement that the RBI targets inflation to maintain price stability and foster confidence in the currency.

A distinguished scholar Mr.Christo Thomas Jacob, Doctoral Researcher, University College – Dublin, Ireland, and expert in the field of economics shared his knowledge and expertise during the event, shedding light on various aspects of economics and its implications for the future. The students had the opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions and gain valuable insights from the speaker. Overall, the International Scholar Lecture Series II was a resounding success, providing a platform for intellectual exchange and fostering a deeper understanding of economics and its role in shaping our world.


Orientation on the Outcome Based Education Session - IV

The Department of Economics hosted an orientation session on Outcome Based Education on March 20th, 2024, tailored for its faculty members. Dr. Neelu S Kumar, a faculty member of the Department of Economics and a Committee member of OBE 2.0 at Kristu Jayanti College Autonomous in Bangalore, served as the event's resource person. The session commenced with an introductory discussion, underscoring the importance of Outcome-Based Education. The presentation also delved into the process of validating and formulating course outcomes, along with mapping the associated knowledge levels. Measurement of the outcomes at the course and programme levels and computation of CO and PO attainment levels, etc. The session concluded with a vibrant discussion, with active participation from all faculty members of the Department of Economics.


Alumni Meet - Yaaden

The event aimed to reconnect with former students and reminisce about their experiences while fostering camaraderie among alumni and current students. The event's highlight was the presence of esteemed alumnus from the batch of 2015, who graced the occasion with their participation. Their attendance added a nostalgic touch to the gathering as they shared anecdotes from their time at the college and reflected on their academic journey since graduating. The event commenced with a warm welcome extended to all attendees by the organizers. Following this, Fr. Emmanuel P.J delivered the presidential remarks, emphasizing the significance of alumni engagement and their continued association with the department.


Garbage Cleaning Drive
Date: 15 March 2024
Jayantian Extension Services, National Service Scheme and Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) in association with the Department of Economics organised a Garbage Cleaning Drive as a part of the NSS service on 15th March 2024 at 4.40 pm. The allotted students from the NSS have actively participated in collecting and cleaning plastic garbage on K. Narayanapura Road, Kothanur. This extension activity aims to have a clean road near the college area. The cleaning drive has been focussed on cleaning the surroundings of our neighbours. The residents, pedestrians and shopkeepers have highly appreciated the cleaning work done by our NSS volunteers.


Internship Orientation for IV Semester BA Applied Students

During the session, they provided a comprehensive overview of the internship process and procedures to the students. Additionally, they took the time to address any queries or concerns the students had regarding their upcoming internships. This orientation likely played a crucial role in preparing the students for their internships by ensuring they had a clear understanding of what to expect and how to navigate through the experience effectively.


Femme Fete - Women’s Day Celebration

The Department of Economics celebrated “Femme fete - a women's day celebration “ on 7th March 2024 at 2.30 to 4.30 pm. Celebration hosted by MA Economics boys students for Girls students and women faculty members of the department. This gathering echoed with the voices of solidarity and appreciation as we honored the achievements and resilience of women from all walks of life. Through thought-provoking role play , song and Speeches students reaffirmed our commitment to gender equality and women's empowerment. It was a moment to reflect on the progress made, acknowledge the challenges ahead, and renew our collective resolve to create a more inclusive and equitable society.


ECNOTECH 2024 Economics Carnival

Ecnotch is Carnival based event Organised by Department of Economics. It is an new initiative of the Department. The main objective of the event is to “Enjoy & Explore Economics. This unique event brings students together to sharpen the skills and enhance the leadership qualities. In this vibrant event the following activities has been projected by BA applied Economics, Dual Major Economics Combination and MA Economics Students. These are Economics Static & Working Model based on three themes such as Green Economy Economics Theories & New Economics, Live Exhibition in the form of Role-play (based on the theme of Evolution of Money),Economist Corner (Students presenting themselves as renowned Economist) and Games Galore (Cracking games connected with Economics and General Games). Chief guest Dr. S. K. Tripathi, Former Director of National Institute of Public Cooperation & Child Development address the students gave lot of insight about behavioral economics research with its output. Event has been concluded at 4.30 with Valedictory ceremony.

On February 17, 2024, the Vitarkh Debate Club of the Department of Economics Kristu Jayanti College organized TradeTalks'24, an event designed to underscore the critical role of constructive discourse and cooperation in deciphering the intricacies of global trade dynamics. Serving as a hallmark platform for discerning trade discussions, TradeTalks'24 commenced with a flawless inauguration, heralding the presence of esteemed alumni, Mr. Ayush and Mr. Vipin, who assumed the roles of chairpersons. TradeTalks'24 exemplified the spirit of intellectual exploration and cooperation, underscoring the significance of collaborative efforts in navigating the challenges and opportunities presented by global trade.


Student Presentation On Interim Budget 2024

Department of Economics organised a Student Presentation on Interim Budget 2024 on February 06, 2024, for students pursuing a BA in Applied Economics. Four MA Economics students gave a presentation on the different aspects of the Interim Budget 2024 to BA students. The presentation began by explaining significance of Interim Budget amidst the issues resulting from rapid population expansion and demographic changes. They also discussed about the main features of the interim budget for 2024, which include, among other things, rapid fast-tracking infrastructure, free electricity, upgrading maternity and childcare, cheap housing, Atmanirbharta in agriculture and other sectors, and no tax modifications. Students stated that the Budget emphasized the expansion of Ayushman Bharat healthcare coverage to all ASHA and Anganwadi beneficiaries amid several announcements benefiting young, the destitute, women, and farmers.UG students gained knowledge from the presentation and the session ended with Q & A Session.


Live Streaming of Interim Budget Presentation 2024-25

The Department of Economics organized livestreaming of the Union Budget Interim 2024-2025 on 1st February. Live streaming started at 11 am in A1 auditorium. Finance Minister Shrimathi Nirmala Sitharaman presented the interim budget .The following key areas has been highlighted in her budget speech such as Economic Growth Targets, Fiscal Deficit and Debt Management, Social Welfare Initiatives, Infrastructure Development, Job Creation Strategies and so on. The Students of Department of Economics has been keenly observing the presentation and noted the points shred by the Finance Minister. This live streaming session engaging the students to elevate the understanding of economics without the complexity.


An Orientation Programme on Economics Horizons: Promising Careers

The Department of Economics, Kristu Jayanti College, organized an Orientation Programme on Economics Horizons: Promising Careers for the BA VI Semester PSEC / HSEC / JOEC & STEC students on 31st January 2024. The main aim of the orientation is to give the orientation on the departmental activities conducted during the last year and the previous semester for the skill enhancement of the students. During the event, the students placed through our college campus selection have shared their interview experiences with the UG students to be ready for their interviews. The BA students asked and clarified various doubts regarding opportunities for higher education and tips for placements.


“Strategic Networking forum through Linkedin”

The Economics Club successfully organized a Strategic Networking Forum on 25-01-2024 to foster connections and provide valuable networking opportunities for students in their 6th semester pursuing BA PSEC, HSEC, JOEC and BSc STEC. Dr. Vinodha Devi K, Faculty member from Economics Department served as resource person. The forum commenced with an insightful workshop on optimizing LinkedIn profiles for professional networking. Students received valuable tips on crafting compelling summaries, highlighting skills, and effectively engaging with industry professionals. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing gratitude for the practical knowledge gained and the opportunity to expand their professional networks. Students highlighted the importance of events like these in bridging the gap between academia and the professional world. The Strategic Networking Forum was a resounding success, achieving its goal of providing a platform for students to build meaningful connections and gain insights into potential career paths. The Economics Club remains committed to organizing such events to empower students on their journey towards successful and fulfilling careers.


INDIAN ECONOMIST ON TRANSFORMING INDIA

The Department of Economics hosted a panel discussion for MA Economics students on January 24, 2024, in honor of the 75th Republic Day of India, with the theme "INDIAN ECONOMIST ON TRANSFORMING INDIA." The event started at 1.40 pm with a patriotic song, which was followed by a panel discussion. Students debated the oil crisis, demonetization, gender inequality, and other economic challenges from the viewpoint of well-known Indian economists. They vowed to imitate these leaders in the poor world after debating their contribution to the development of the nation. The experience provided a new perspective on how to think from the perspective of a well-known economist. The national anthem marked the end of the event.


Student Debate on Innovation, Invention and Patent: Rights & Processes through Think-Pair-Share Method

The Department of Economics, Kristu Jayanti College, organized a Student Debate on Innovation, Invention and Patent: Rights & Processes through the THINK-PAIR-SHARE Method. The event took place on January 23rd, 2024, whose moderator was Dr. Sivasubramanian K, Coordinator, Department of Economics and the attendees from the final year students of BA Journalism and Economics. The primary objective of the event was to discuss the need for patent registration for protection or monetising the unique idea by an innovative teaching pedagogy called the THINK-PAIR-SHARE Method. Students were divided into two groups and were given either of the two topics to discuss and defend. The discussion ranged from arguing about the advantages and assumptions to real-world examples. Each point was elaborated and questioned by both teams. The participants from both parties enthusiastically put forth their arguments and points about their respective topics and an unwavering discussion was maintained. All queries and doubts were cleared by the moderator of the event, Dr. Sivasubramanian K, who also provided a deeper understanding of the points presented. New insights were put into perspective and learned. Overall, the event was informative and the attendees left with more knowledge about the given topic.


Internship Orientation Programme

2023 The World This Year

The "2023 World This Year" discourse, organized by the Department of Economics at Kristu Jayanti College Autonomous Bengaluru in collaboration with the National Institute of Advanced Studies, GPYV, and Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung, unfolded on December 15th and 16th, attracting over 30 scholars from diverse global institutions. Held at the A1 Conference Hall, Admin Block, Kristu Jayanti College, the event provided a dynamic platform for discussions on key global issues, spanning Geo politics, Conflicts, international relations, economics, technology, and politics. With lively debates and contributions from eminent scholars, the conference fostered a rich exchange of ideas, contributing to a deeper understanding of the world's current challenges. The collaboration ensured a multidimensional perspective, emphasizing inclusivity and paving the way for continued global academic dialogue and collaboration


Orientation on the Outcome Based Education Session - III

The Department of Economics, organised an orientation on Outcome-Based Education on 16th November 2023 for the faculty members of the Department of Economics. Dr. Neelu S Kumar, Faculty member, Department of Economics and Committee member OBE 2.0, Kristu Jayanti College Autonomous, Bangalore, served as the resource person for the event. The session mainly focussed on the curriculum framing based on the ten components as per the National Educational Policy. The topics such as course outcome and programme outcome framing, selection of graduate outcomes skill set identification matrix, rubrics setting for formative and summative assessments, etc. The session concluded with a lively discussion in which every faculty member of the Department of Economics enthusiastically participated, sharing and deliberating on their questions and recommendations.


National Legal Services day

Anbarasi, Assistant Professor at Government Law College, provided profound insights into the transformative power of legal services, emphasizing the link between our thoughts and destiny. She highlighted the crucial role of awareness in ensuring equal access to legal services. The event aimed to not only foster legal empowerment but also contribute to a broader societal understanding of justice dynamics and the importance of accessible legal services.


Orientation on the Outcome-Based Education Session - II

The Department of Economics, organised an orientation on Outcome-Based Education on 20th October 2023 for the faculty members of the Department of Economics. During the session, the resource person emphasised the significance of the course outcomes and the framing of the course outcomes. The session also includes the question paper setting based on each level of Bloom’s Taxonomy with examples. Research Scholar Talk on Nobel Prize in Economic Science 2023 for having Advanced Understanding of Women Labour’s Market Outcomes’

Ms. Aarya Rajjive, a research scholar in economics from the University of Birmingham, served as the resource person for the event. Her presentation centered on the work of Professor Claudia Goldin, the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Economic Science for 2023. Professor Goldin’s research focused on analyzing factors influencing women's labor market outcomes, including wage disparities, occupational segregation, and the impact of family dynamics. Her work provided valuable insights into the barriers faced by women in the labor market and proposed policy recommendations to address these challenges.

Campus Cleaning Drive SHRAMDAAN Ek Tareekh Ek Ghanta Ek Saath

In commemoration of Gandhi Jayanti, the Department of Economics orchestrated a remarkable Campus Cleaning Drive on October 3, 2023. This endeavor witnessed active participation from both First and Third Semester MA Economics students, who came together for an hour of voluntary service, a fitting tribute to the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. Under the Government of India Initiative of "SHRAMDAAN Ek Tareekh Ek Ghanta Ek Saath," the event was aimed at instilling values of cleanliness and community service deeply rooted in Gandhi's philosophy. The students demonstrated their commitment as they diligently cleaned various parts of the campus, from classrooms to the courtyard. This initiative was not merely a cleaning exercise but an opportunity for students to bond, collaborate, and reflect upon the importance of cleanliness and self-reliance. It emphasized unity and camaraderie while encouraging participants to incorporate Gandhi's principles into their daily lives. The impact of the Campus Cleaning Drive was evident in the visibly cleaner campus and the sense of fulfillment among the students. It not only paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi but also laid the foundation for a responsible and socially conscious generation of citizens. The Department of Economics intends to continue organizing such community service events, reaffirming its commitment to shaping responsible individuals who understand the significance of collective effort and community involvement.


Alumni Lecture Series I on Transition from Campus to Corporate

The session of ‘Alumni lecture series: Transition from campus to cooperate’ was taken over by Ms. Tesma Jomin who briefed about the process of transition from the campus to the corporate.MA Economics and BA Dual major Economics final year students were attended the session. The Session happened in A1 Audi Main block at 11am to 11.50am. Speaker said that the transition from campus to corporate is a bit strange, is both an exciting and embarrassing process for all the graduates. Resource person shared about the preparation process required in prior, to make the transition soother and easier. Ms.Tesma suggested the following three steps to prepare yourself to secure a job, apply for the job and preparing yourself for interview. She insisted on creating an active LinkedIn account, which is an online platform wherein we form a network with people by connecting to them. Speaker also talked about the various technical and personal skills required for any kind of job. As the market becomes more demanding, people will have to possess certain skills required for the job role and type. Finally, Ms.Tesma ended her discussion by clearing the doubts of the students in various procedures related to the job seeking. Speaker gave her own example of the interview process that she had gone through while applying for placements.


Student Panel Discussion on “AI Integration: Transformation of Indian Industries”

IIIrd Semester BA Applied Economics organized the Panel Discussion on the topic of “AI Integration: Transformation of Indian Industries” on 22nd September 2023. The panelists were divided into two team, which consist of three members each. One team presented the argument in favor of the topic and the other discussed the negative impact of the same. The team discussed the importance of AI in Industrial growth, Present Status of AI status in Indian Industries. The other team argued about replacement of job due to AI Existence, problem of adopting AI in Medium and SSI also discussed .The discussion was lively, with each side presenting their arguments in a passionate and well-reasoned manner. While there were disagreements between both teams, the moderators lead the discussion in the respective topic and moderators raised the questions to the panelist. This Panel discussion gave lot of insight to the audience and panelist as well about the reality of AI existence in Indian Industries.


Teachers' Day Celebration in the Department of Economics

The Department of Economics celebrated Teachers' Day on September 6, 2023, in a unique and innovative way. Postgraduate students were given the opportunity to take classes for undergraduate students on Indian great teachers like Vivekananda, Kautilya, and Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. This was a great opportunity for PG students to exhibit their teaching skills and for UG students to learn about these great teachers from their peers. The PG students prepared well for their classes and delivered engaging and informative lectures. They used a variety of teaching methods, including ppt presentations, discussions. The UG students were very receptive to their teachers and participated actively in the classes. The overall feedback from both the PG and UG students was very positive. The PG students felt that this experience was a valuable opportunity to improve their teaching skills and to learn more about the great teachers of India. The UG students were grateful for the opportunity to learn about these great teachers from their peers and to see them in a different light.


Fresher's Day

The Department of Economics organized Fresher's Day for students of I MA Economics and I BA Applied Economics on 2/9/2023. Rev Fr. Joshy Mathew, HOD, Department of English, Director, Human Resource Department, Kristu Jayanti College graced the event as Chief Guest. Ms. Ashly P John of I MA Economics hosted the session and Mr Manan of II BA Applied Economics warmly welcomed the gathering. During his address, Rev. Fr. Joshy Mathew emphasized the significance of Mind Management, drawing inspiration from the book "Mind Management, Not Time Management: Productivity When Creativity Matters" authored by David Kadavy. Father encouraged the students to capitalize on these opportunities and highlighted the pivotal role of attitude in making the most of them. Dr. Sivasubramanian K, Coordinator, Department of Economics welcomed the students to the department and encouraged them to actively participate in Academic and Co-curricular activities. Following these formal proceedings, an informal session ensued, featuring various engaging activities and games organized by students from II BA Applied Economics and II MA Economics. The fresher students showcased their diverse talents, with some delivering impressive dance and singing performances. In the culmination of the event, the titles of Mister and Miss Fresher 2023 were awarded based on personality assessments. Mr. Sameer and Mr. Akash Binu Johnson were respectively crowned Mister Fresher 2023 for the undergraduate and postgraduate categories. Ms. Ishika and Ms. Shreya M Kurup earned the titles of Miss Fresher 2023 in the undergraduate and postgraduate categories, respectively.

The program aimed to inspire the undergraduate and postgraduate students of Political Science (BA PSEC, HSPS, PSSO, MA in Public Administration) by highlighting the significance of the subject and its career opportunities.

Mr. Thomas, a successful political analyst, shared a personal connection with the college, fostering trust. He emphasized Political Science career potential, including roles like policy analysts, political consultant, diplomats, career in schools, colleges and universities and advised on specialization paths. An inspiring segment detailed his journey as a political analyst and campaign manager, showcasing transformative power of the field. The core message of the program underscored the importance of Political Science careers in shaping societies and policies, urging commitment for meaningful change.

In conclusion, interaction with Mr. Thomas left a profound impact, reaffirming students’ belief in Political Science- a potential to shape the world.

Value Added Certificate Course on ‘Economics of Artificial Intelligence

Department of Economics organised and conducted a Value Added Certificate Course on ‘Economics of Artificial Intelligence’ from 22nd to 26th August 2023. This course enables the students to analyse the uses of Artificial Intelligence, which is widely used in many industries such as agriculture, manufacturing and service sectors. This thirty-hour course is very helpful to the students to enhance their knowledge of the significance of Artificial Intelligence in Economics. This course helps the students to understand the market fraction hypothesis in Financial Markets. The students of I MA Economics have actively taken part learned various aspects of Value Added Courses on Economics and AI technology.


LMS Hands-on Training

LMS hands-on training session for the new batches of BA Applied and MA has been organized on 21st August 2023 at 12-12.50 pm. During the session, input about Flip Class room and its important were discussed. Hands on training has been given for login in to LMS and participating the activity, which tagged with the subjects. The students were given time to clarify their queries regarding signing into the LMS portal. There are 28 MA and 27 BA students have attended the session in Conclave hall. Students also clarified with the usage of different plugin. The session was very much informative and student’s queries were clarified.


Life Skills Training

The Centre for Life Skills Education (CLSE) of Kristu Jayanti College, Bengaluru in association with the Department of Economics has initiated training on Life Skills for the I Semester MA students from 18th August to 21st August 2023. Life skill training is an interactive, real-world readiness programme for youth. This capacity-building training was focused on imparting 10 core life skills promoted by the World Health Organization (WHO). These life skills represent the psychosocial skills that determine valued behaviour and include reflective skills such as problem-solving and critical thinking, personal skills such as self-awareness, and interpersonal skills. The entire training was activity-based with an intense learning experience.

Department of Economics conducted a Value Added Course on “Digital Transformation in Banking” from 2nd August 2023 to 9th August 2023. This course enables the students to analyse the importance of digital banking and its application in the modern economy. Digital marketing has significantly impacted various industries, including online banking, by enhancing customer outreach and simplifying banking processes. It has also led to significant growth in online booking, with banks offering rewards or discounts to encourage frequent use of their services. Based on the Syllabus taught, an examination has been conducted. The students of I Semester BA Applied Economics in the Value Added Course and benefited from the same.

Department of Economics conducted a Value Added Certificate Course on “Economic Policy of Artificial Intelligence”from 25thJuly 2023 to 1st August 2023. This course enables the students to analyse the importance of artificial intelligence in enhancing economic growth and productivity, but also poses risks like job market polarization, inequality, and structural unemployment in an economy. Based on the Syllabus taught, an examination has been conducted. The students of III Semester BA Applied Economics and JOEC have actively part taken in the Value Added Course and benefited from the same.

Department of Economics conducted a Value Added Certificate Course on ‘Economics of artificial intelligence’from 22nd August to 26th August 2022. This course enables the students to analyse the uses of Artificial Intelligence, which is widely used in financial economics for trading securities like stocks and bonds, and entering interest rate derivative contracts for speculative or hedging purposes. The students of I MA Economics have actively part taken in the Value Added Course and benefitted from the same.


Value Added Course on “Open Ai and Chatgpt” III Semester M A Economics

Department of Economics conducted a Value Added Course on “Open AI and chat GPT” from 28th July 2023 to 2nd August 2023. This course also enables the students to analyse the importance of Chat GPT which is a form of generative artificial intelligence, a tool that lets users enter prompts to receive humanlike images, text, or videos that are created by AI. Chat GPT is similar to the automated chat services found on customer service websites, as people can ask it questions or request clarification to ChatGPT's replies. Based on the Syllabus taught, an examination has been conducted. The students of III Semester MA Economics have actively part taken in the Value Added Course and benefited from the same.


Students Debate on Absolute Cost Advantage Theory and comparative Cost Theory through the JIGSAW Method

Department of Economics, organized a debate on Absolute Cost Advantage Theory and comparative Cost Theory through the JIGSAW method, on 23rd August 2023, by the 5th Semester undergraduate students of JOEC & STEC as a part of implying innovative teaching-learning process. The session aimed to discuss and debate on the given topic. Two groups were formed to analyze and debate two different theories. The Adam Smith team was the debate on the superiority of the Absolute Cost Advantage theory and its implications. On the other side, the Ricardo team counteracted and debated on the superiority of the Comparative Cost Advantage theory of trade. The event concluded with analysis, sharing of knowledge and collective efforts of the students through the innovative pedagogical tool called JIGSAW.


An awareness session on Building Bridges of Safety and Inclusivity

Department of Economics, in collaboration with Department of Social Work, organized an awareness session on Building bridges of safety and Inclusivity, on 18th August 2023, for both Under Graduate and Post Graduate Students. The session aimed to address the pressing issue of ragging and promote a safe and inclusive environment within educational institutions. Dr. Jonas Richard A, Professor and Head, Department of Social work, delivered an enlightening presentation that highlighted the importance of creating an atmosphere where students feel secure and respected. He emphasized that ragging not only violates the dignity of individuals but also hampers the overall learning experience. The session underscored the significance of fostering a sense of belonging among students through open communication, empathy, and zero tolerance for any form of harassment. Strategies to prevent ragging were discussed, including creating strict anti-ragging policies, setting up dedicated helplines, and organizing orientation programs to educate students about the consequences of such behavior. The participation of students and faculty members, from both departments reflected the campus's commitment to creating a harmonious and secure learning environment.

Prof.Sen B Mathews, Director - Centre for Employability and Corporate Relations addressed the students. The skills highlighted in the session were to improve the individual's level of awareness and to increase the motivation to perform the job well thereby increasing the overall productivity and performance. The session began with the welcome Note and ended with a Note of Thanks from the two student Placement Coordinators of the Department Mr. Prashanth Tapa & Miss. Meenakshi.

The function began with welcoming the senior students, followed by the welcome speech, fun games, and felicitation of Fr. Deepu Joy. Director, Student Welfare Office, Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous) Bengaluru. Faculty members wished final-year students bright future careers. Finally, refreshments were served and there was an environment of enthusiasm experienced it was a memorable event.


Startup Series I Meet The Passionate Entrepreneurs

Department of Economics in collaboration with the KristuJayanti incubation canter & Dhaka School of Economics (DSEC) constituent a startup series “Meet the Passionate Entrepreneurs” for the students of MA Economics on the 21st of April. The Resource Person was Mr. Syed Nasir, an Industrialist, and managing director, of Xclusive Can Limited, Dhaka, Bangladesh. The Resource person opined that entrepreneurs should complete the ten-year career framework to think long-term and make use of time. He opined that entrepreneurship starts with an idea that solves real-world problems. He suggested the participants encourage and establish their own startups and industrial units to solve unemployment. Department of Economics in collaboration with the library and information center has organized a “Hands-on Training on EBSCO-The Research Database” for the Students of MA Economics on the eighteenth the 18th of April. The Resource Person was Mr. Rajendra Kumar, Head, Training Sources, EBSCO, Information Services, India, and Mr. M S Srinivas, Training Manager, South States, EBSCO, Information Services, India Assistant Manager, Capital Market Publishers India Pvt Ltd. Bengaluru. The Resource person stressed the benefits of the application of EBSCO for the students and is helpful in Basic and advanced searching options. Hosts serve both new and experienced researchers with a variety of features to refine search results. They further opined that EBSCO provides users, a reliable, peer-reviewed content, citation assistance, and the ability to save searches and results.

Public expenditure, Economics of caste system and untouchability, Indian currency, and on Economic liberalization. The purpose of conducting the students’ presentation is to raise awareness of the economic contributions of Dr. B R Ambedkar in general and his economic contributions towards the Indian Economy in particular. The session ended with a discussion session, wherein the students cleared their doubts and acquired awareness about Ambedkar as an economist.

Entrepreneurship in Emerging Economies

In collaboration with the Dhaka School of Economics (DSEC) constituent institution of the University of Dhaka organizes KJC (DSEC) international panel discussion on “Entrepreneurship in emerging economies” for the students of MA Economics on the 1st of April. The Moderator was Dr. D. Ravindran, Innovation Activity Coordinator, KristuJayanti Incubation Centre. The panelists from MA Economics, KristuJayanti College, Autonomous were, Ms.Rebecca Sharon J, Ms.Rashi Singh Deo, and Ms.Jyothi.S.The panelists from the Dhaka School of Economics (DSEC) were Mr.Rytham Debnath, Ms.Zakiya Sultana, and Mr.Khandakar Abdullah Muhmud. The Panelists from both Institutions have expressed their views that Entrepreneurship can accelerate growth in highly developed economies, but not in less-developed ones. They further opined that Capital Formation, Improvement in Per Capita Income, Generation of Employment, and a Few Others. Economic development essentially means a process of upward change whereby the real per capita income of a country increases over some time. Finally, the session ended with the concluding remarks of the moderator Dr. D Ravindran clarifying the queries of the Panelists and Participants.


Awareness Campaign on Reserve Bank Integrated Ombudsman Scheme (RBI IOS)

Department of Economics organized an awareness campaign on ‘Reserve Bank Integrated Ombudsman Scheme (RBI IOS) 2021’ on 7th March 2023 at Auditorium 3, Main Block from 10.00 am to 11.00 am. Mr. Rahul Kumar, Manager, RBI, Bengaluru, Ms. Kshipra Kasar, Manager, RBI, Bengaluru, and Ms. Marina Boro, Manager, RBI, Bengaluru were the resource persons and conducted a session for the students of I BA Applied Economics, VI Sem BA Economics, and MA Economics. The main objective of this Programme was to update information on the anti-legal practices in the Banking sector and to safeguard the interests of the Bank customers. The resource persons stressed the different methods of malpractices done by the anti-social elements and how to protect the interests of the Bank customers. In general, Ombudsman is appointed by Reserve Bank to address customer grievances. Of public, private, rural, and cooperative banks. This session aims to create awareness among young minds about the fraud happening in the Banking sector and precautionary measures to protect themselves. It was an informative and elevating session. Crisis Analysis on ‘US Banking Crisis 2023: Inside storye

Department of Economics organized a Crisis Analysis on ‘US Banking Crisis 2023: Inside story’, for the students of I MA Economics. Dr. K Vinodha Devi was the Moderator and all the Students of I MA participated in the same. The students shared their views on the ongoing US banking Crisis and they tried to trace back to a similar crisis that happened in the US between 2007-08. All the students agreed on the point that the tight monetary policy followed by the US Federal Reserve Bank was the major cause of this crisis. Students tried to analyze various other causes like crowd psychology, banks investing in long-term portfolios, uninsured deposits, and interest and liquidity risks that led to the crisis. Dr. K Vinodha Devi, the moderator of the session gave inputs on how to relate the theories and concepts given by different monetary economists to the ongoing crisis. Students were able to suggest effective strategies to overcome this crisis such as time monitoring of the assets and liabilities of banks, considering the financial system conditions before implementing monetary policies, determining the proper balance between liquidity and profitability, and so on. Toward the end, students also discussed how to deal with this type of banking crisis if it were to happen in India. The crisis analysis was concluded by Dr. K Vinodha Devi, moderator of the event by giving significant insights and thoughts on the topics discussed.

Dr. Mayank Pandey, Assistant Professor, Kristu Jayanti College Autonomous, Bengaluru, oversaw the session. The session's focus was “Uncovering the Art of Research: A Beginner's Guide”. The talk enriched the students' religious understanding and nurtured their interest in research. The session was attended by the final-year BA triple majors and MA economics students.


International Day Of Happiness a Happiness Challenge on Gross National Product (GNP) vs Gross National Happiness (GNH)

The Department of Economics organized the International Day of Happiness; a happiness challenge for the Undergraduate and Post Graduate students of Economics on 20th March 2023 from 2.50 pm to 4.00 pm. The International Day of Happiness is an UN-sponsored annual event that encourages happiness as a universal human right. It also highlights how important happiness is to humanity.

The tenacity of the International Day of Happiness is to increase awareness of the worth of happiness in one's life and the overall influence it can have on a person's well-being.

The Students of the Department of Economics have conducted various fun games namely, passing the parcel of happiness and conducted quizzes and suggested practicing daily gratitude, surrounding ourselves with positive people, practicing regular acts of kindness, spending more time with family and friends, and invest in experiences, not objects.

Budget Week Inauguration

The Department of Economics, Kristu Jayanti College Autonomous organised the budget week inauguration on the 3rd of February 2023. The venue was Auditorium 3 of the Admin Block and the program began at the scheduled time of 10:00 an m. The resource person was Dr. Jyotsna Jha, Director, Centre for Budget and Policy Studies, Bengaluru. She talked about various new aspects of the budget and the new schemes which were introduced based on the major seven themes. She also devoted a major part of her speech to discussing the reforms in the tax regime. The event came to an end with a question and answer session between the expert and the audience. There were many thoughtful questions asked by the MA Economics and M.com students on a budget in line with economic development.


Book Review on The Psychology of Money

Department of Economics has organized a Psychology of Money Timeless Lessons on Wealth, Greed and Happiness” by Morgan Housel for I MA students on 20th February between 11.00 am in conclave Hall. The students reviewed and presented their views focusing on 19 biases, behaviors, or attitudes that affect the financial success of different people with their life experiences. They opined that Morgan Housel's book provides short stories to explain why people think the way they do about money. Finally, the session came to an end with a discussion and feedback from the Moderator of the Session, Dr. K Vinodha Devi.


Budget Week -National Level Inter-collegiate quiz on Union Budget 2023

The Department of Economics conducted a National Level Inter-collegiate quiz on Union Budget 2023 as part of the Budget Week Program. Students, Faculty members, Research Scholars, and others from different parts of India attended the quiz. The participants who scored 50 percent and above received an E-certificate. Together 157 participants attended the quiz.

Vitarkh - Debate Club - Dissect of Union Budget 2023

In association with Budget Week 2023, the Economics debate club, “Vitarka” organized a competition aimed at enriching the critical analysis and presentation skills of the students. The competition was conducted in two segments and was designed as a team event. The first segment was conducted in an offline mode requiring the participants to submit a written analysis of the Union Budget 2023. The responses were collected via a google form and a total of five teams were selected in the end for the final round. In the finale, the teams were given a chance to explicate their viewpoints on the Union Budget 2023 with the help of PowerPoint presentations. The main purpose of the competition was to encourage cooperation and to open the participants to curate a perspective of their own. The event concluded by announcing the results.

Pre-Budget Survey - Union Budget 2023-24

Department of Economics has conducted a Budget Survey to analyze the expectations of the Individuals by conducting a pre-budget survey for the Union Budget 2023-24 as a part of Budget Week. A well-structured questionnaire was prepared, covering questions related to all aspects of the economy. It was shared through google Forms to different segments of society to learn about their expectation of the Union Budget. 767 members participated in the survey and expressed their views on the upcoming budget.

The Students of I M A Economics have conducted a session on a review of World Bank Papers. The main objective of this review session was to focus on the basic guidelines for reviewing papers. The topic chosen for review was part of the II MA Economics Fiscal policy and Practice curriculum. The Students have been reviewed and emphasized on the state of knowledge, and apparent inconsistencies, detect needed research and even create a harmony where none existed before. The Students have also focused on the research problems and tracing solutions. Department of Economics organized an awareness campaign on ‘Career opportunities in Reserve Bank of India’ on 25th November 2022 at Auditorium 3, Admin Block from 11.00 am to 1.00 am. Shri Vishal Ranjan, Manager, RBI, Bengaluru, Ms. Madhuchhanda Sahoo Manager, Department of Economic and Policy Research, RBI, Bengaluru, and Ms. Chhavi Acharya, Assistant Manager, RBI, Bengaluru were the resource persons and conducted a session for the students of I B A Applied Economics, V BA Economics, and MA Economics. The main objective of this Programme was to update information on the availability of job opportunities at the R B I for the students and equip them with the required competencies. The resource persons stressed the process of examination and selection of job aspirants into the Reserve Bank opportunities.

This session aims to create awareness among young minds about the Job opportunities available with the Reserve bank of India and enable the students to have a great careers. It was an informative and elevating session. The session ended with an interface session.


A Session on Personal Branding

The Department of Economics has organized a session on Personal branding to enhance abilities, information, and procedures for appearing for job interviews, which would support them to seek job openings. The Resource Person was Mr.Bijin Philip, from Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous) Bengaluru. The resource person concentrated mainly on preparing students to appear for job interviews.

The major perseverance of conducting this session is, to develop several opportunities for seeking placement openings. The Resource person stressed self-branding. resume building, self-introduction, dress code, behaviour pattern and the importance of communication. The students need to inculcate all these criteria to seek job opportunities among various companies including, technical and non-technical.

Finally, the session came to an end with an interface session, wherein, the students posed various questions, and accordingly, the resource person clarified all of them.


World Sight Day 2022

The Department of Economics organized an eye donation camp with the collaboration of the Karnataka civil defence corps on the eve of world sight day 2022 on 17/10/2022.

The ultimate purpose of World Sight Day is to raise awareness of cataracts, glaucoma, and other chronic eye disorders promptly to prevent visual impairment or blindness. Eye health impacts education, employment, quality of life, poverty, and many other Sustainable Development Goals. This program encouraged the donation of eves from donors who want to donate voluntarily. The students of the Department of Economics actively participated in the event and were inspired to spread light in the world of darkness.


International Coffee Day-Chai Pe Charcha Coffee Versus Tea Which is India’s Favourite Hot Beverage an Ultimate Brew Battle

Department of Economics organized a student panel discussion on ‘chai pe charcha coffee versus tea which in India is a favorite hot Beverage and an ultimate brew battle’, on the eve of International Coffee Day, for the students of II MA Economics. Mr.Jaher Muktahr K P was the Moderator and the Students of II MA have been divided into two groups who presented their views in support of Coffee and tea respectively. Students who supported coffee opined that Coffee beverages are also more caffeinated than tea, so they provide more of the health benefits associated with caffeine, such as making it easier to breathe by relaxing your airways, improving memory, and constricting the blood vessels in the brain. The panellists who supported the drinking of tea opined that consumption of tea boosts the immune system, fights off inflammation, and even wards off cancer and heart disease. The panel discussion was concluded by the moderator of the event giving significant insights and thoughts on the topics discussed.


Student Panel Discussion on Gandhian Economic Model And Its Relevance Remembering The Father Of The Nation

Department of Economics organized a student panel discussion on ‘The Gandhian economic model and its relevance to the Indian economy, on the eve of Gandhi Jayanti, for the students of I MA Economics. Dr.Neelu S Kumar was the Moderator and the Students have been MS, Ashley P John, Ms.Keerthana V, Ms.Lalmuanpuii C, Mr.Lalrotluanga M C, and Mr.Rajarshi Ghosh.

The panellists opined that Gandhi believed in economic ideas, namely,village republic, trusteeship, decentralization and swadeshi for the Indian economy and also suggested that, the use of modern machines and tools, provided it is not used as a means of exploitation of others. The Panelists emphasized that, Gandhian ideas are relevant to the present economy.

LMS Orientation for I MA & I BA Applied Economics

Ms.Preethi SJG, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, conducted a session for the students of I MA Economics and I BA Applied Economics. The main objective of this Orientation Programme was to update an information on the Portal LMS (Learning made simple) with the basic guidelines, format and procedure required to access and make use of it.

This session aims at equipping the young minds with the skill set which would make them the major driving force for technology innovation and improving their competencies.

Project Orientation For V Semester B.Sc MSE
Date: 10 September 2022 Department of Economics organized a Project Orientation on Project Guidelines on 10th September 2022 at Council Room, Admin Blockfrom 1.45 to 3.30 pm. Mr. Jaheer Mukthar K P, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, conducted a session for the students of V Semester B.sc MSE with systematic guidelines on the topic, “Project Reporting.” The main objective of this Orientation Programme was to supplement students with the basic guidelines, format and procedure required to prepare the project report.

The resource person has focused on the sequence of a project, index, introduction, review of literature, profile, data interpretation, findings, suggestions, conclusion and bibliography. The session ends with an interface session wherein the resource person answered all the questions.


Economics Club Inauguration 2022-23
Date: 22 September 2022 The Department of Economics, Kristujayanti College, (Autonomous) Bangalore, organized Economics club inauguration on 22nd September 2022.Dr. Balasubramanian M, Assistant Professor, Centre for Ecological Economics and Natural Resources, ISEC, Bengaluru, inaugurated the Economics Club. Undergraduate and Postgraduate students were the part of the program.Dr. Balasubramanian M in his keynote address, discussed about the impact of industrialization on nature, which causes ecological imbalance. He emphasized the need of conserving the forests and preserve nature for the sake of future generations. He focused on the Green Gross domestic product wherein the Government will have to consider positive and negative externalities while assessing the Gross domestic product. He stressed that nature should be given indemnity for being exploited by the increased population. He also mentioned the endeavors of the Government in protecting nature by imposing environmental tax on the polluters who are damaging the existing environment system. The session ended with a Q & A session.

The Department of Economics organized Debatonomics: Agree or Disagree a debate competition, ‘Vitarka’for Economics students on 9thSeptember 2022. The Chief Guest was Captain Johns George Thampy (7 Assam) who was an alumnus of Kristujayanti College and at present working as the Captain in the Indian Army in Jammu and Kashmir. He talked about the present problems located in India and emphasized the importance of inculcation of Values in life. He motivated the students to work firm and fulfill their goals.

Department of Economics organized a student panel discussion on ‘Champion of the excluded and exploited A tribute to Abhijit Sen’ for the students of I MA Economics. Dr.Sivasubramanian K was the Moderator and the Students were divided into two groups consists of 10 Panelists each. Team A members opined that, Abhijit Sen’s contribution to the Planning Commission and his contributions to the 11th and 12th five-year plan reports on growth, inclusive growth and sustainability are well known. Team B panellists focused on his achievements, as an adviser and consultant with international organizations, and his contributions towards Public Distribution System.

The panel discussion concluded by Dr. Sivasubramanian K, moderator of the event by giving significant insights and thoughts on the topics discussed.


Fresher’s Day
Date: 03 September 2022
The Department of Economics organized Fresher’s Day 2022 for the students of Ist year BA Applied Economics and Ist year MA Economics, on September 2022. 132 students were present for the program.

The dignitaries for the inaugural session were Dr. Aloysius Edward, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce and Management, and Dr.K Vinodha Devi, Head, of the Department of Economics.

Dr. Aloysius Edward welcomed the gathering. In his welcome address, he stated the importance of education and the value of the program offered at the Department of Economics Following which, the lighting of the lamp, symbolizing that light can drive out darkness and usher in a new beginning. The dignitaries on the dais lit the lamp.

Next, the Head of the Department Dr.K Vonodha Devi invited to address the gathering. She encouraged and motivated the students to take up the various challenges in life and maximize their potential. Further, the students conducted cultural activities and the event ended at 1.30 PM.


Gate 2023 -Opening A Passage Placement Orientation & Training Program (POTP) for The Department Of Economics
The Department of Economics has organized an employability enhancement Programme on Placement Orientation and Training Program (POTP) to enhance abilities, information, and procedures for appearing for job interviews, which would support them to seek job openings. The Resource Person was Prof.Sen Mathews, from Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous) Bengaluru. The resource person concentrated mainly on preparing students to appear for job interviews.

The major perseverance of conducting this session is, to develop several opportunities for seeking placement openings. The Resource person stressed resume building, self-introduction, dress code, behavior pattern, pre-placement talk aptitude test, and the importance of communication. The students need to inculcate all these criteria to seek job opportunities among various companies including, technical and non-technical.

Finally, the session came to an end with an interface session, wherein, the students posed various questions, and accordingly, the resource person clarified all of them.


Orientation on OE,SEC, and KJC Portal
The Department of Economics conducted anorientation for the first semesterof Semester BA Applied Economics students on 25thAugust 2022 at 2.00 pm. The major objective of the program was to bring awareness among the students on the Open elective, Skill enhancement courses, and Kristu Jayanti College Portal. The Head of the Department, Dr.K Vinodha Devi addressed the students witha briefing on the upcoming activities in the department. Mr., Jerin Jacob and, Mr. Kurian George Cheripurathu were the resource persons who addressed the Students on selecting the Open electives, Skill enhancement courses, and the use of the Kristu Jayanti College Portal.

The orientation program ended with an interface session, wherein the resource e persons cleared the queries of the Students.

Department of Economics conducted a Value Added Certificate Course on ‘Competencies for Knowledge-Based Economy ‘from 22nd August to 29th August 2022. This certificate course usually tests the student’s ability to acquire adequate information on how to apply competencies like effective communication, reasoning, and etiquette to get through job interviews. This course also enables the students to analyze ethical and professional issues which arise in an economy. Based on the Syllabus taught, an examination has been conducted in which the students secured above 60 percent of marks. The students of I MA Economics have actively part taken in the Value Added Course and benefitted from the same.

Life Skill Education I BA Applied Economics
Department of Economics conducted life skill orientation session for I BA Applied Economics Students from 11th August to 16th August, 2022. The Life Skill Education aims to reinforce existing knowledge and positive attitudes and values along with the prevention of negative attitudes and risky behaviors. Life Skills Education backs to the promotion of individual and social development and the prevention of health and social problems.

The students of I BA Applied Economics have actively part taken in the Life Skill education and benefitted from the same.


Value added course on “Circular Economy for SDGS –From Concept to Practice”
Department of Economics conducted a Value Added Certificate Course for the Students of II MA Economics, on the topic, ‘Circular Economy for SDGS –from Concept to Practice’from 5th August to 16th August, 2022. This certificate course usually tests the students’ ability to develop insights into critical issues around the world, such as lack of access to clean water and gender equality.This course would enable the students to develop the characteristics of a global citizen, individuals those are active in their local and global communities, while exhibiting empathy for those around them. Based on the Syllabus taught, examination has been conducted for the Students. The students of II MA Economics have actively part taken in the Value Added Course and benefitted from the same.


Independence Day Celebration Heroes Of India’s Revisiting History
The Department of Economics organized an Independence Day celebration with a theme of ‘Heroes of India’s Freedom Revisiting History’ on the eve of Azadi ka Amrut Mahotsav. The students of BA applied economics and MA Economics have actively part taken in the programme and benefitted from the same.

As a part of celebration, quiz and speech competitions were conducted, wherein the students participated actively and shared their ideas and thoughts with the participants.

Finally, the students did pledge, had a song by the choir, remembered the Preamble of the Indian Constitution and the event ended by singing the National anthem.

India Battle’s Inflation 2022 An Economic Survey
Department of Economics has conducted a consumer satisfaction survey on “India battle’s Inflation 2022” on 23rd May 2022. The Students of I MA Economics have been collected data from 36 respondents including students and employees. This was an attempt to understand how the fuel prices got affected the common people and millennial due to inflation. The respondents will have to respond to all the questions given in the prescribed format with their sincere thoughts and identity will not be revealed in public.

The response was rational and everyone had their own ideas to minimize the impact. This survey has really been helped to understand the crisis and provide adequate remedies.


Debate on Economic Policies
The Economics department has organized a ‘Debate on Economic Policies’ on 8th April, 2022 among I MA Economics students. There are two teams formed namely, team- A and team- B. The session began with a silent prayer and welcome speech by Dr. Sivasubramanian K. The debate consisted of recent the economic policies brought for the welfare of the country by both the teams. Each student took their roles from both policy makers and opposition member of the parliament. Each teams had asked questions on the bases of policies, schemes, and on budget 2022. Also a mock agricultural bill was passed on favor of agricultural development with appropriate discussion. The session was ended with a conclusion in favor to employment, agriculture, rural development, education, budget. There are many policy suggestions given by the students for the development of nation.


QUIZONOMICS - Quiz for Budding Economists
The economics club has organized a quiz competition,' Quizonomics. ' There were five teams which included a group of two. The session began with a welcome speech by Ms. Christy Johnson. The quiz consisted of 4 rounds. The first round was Nobel laureates. Each team was asked two questions. The second round was based on the Indian economy. Each team was asked two questions. The third round was Pictionary, in which pictures of eminent economists are shown, and they need to identify the personalities. The last round was a rapid-fire in which seven questions were asked to a team. The winners of the quiz were Ms. Akansha Manojkumar and Ms. Aislin Mary. The Programme ended with a vote of thanks given by Mr. Joel John.


Career Challenges: Get Job Ready
The economics club has organized a session on career challenges on 1st April 2022. The session involved three of our exemplary alumni, who guided students throughout. The session began with a welcome speech by Ms Christy Johnson followed by a profile reading by Mr. Joel John. At first, Ms. Hemavati V, Founder, Inclusive Globe HR recruiter, V-shesh , 2017-19-Batch, talked about her life experiences and, despite being disabled, how she tried hard to achieve something in life. The following person who talked was Sheetal D, Economics Lecturer, St.Charles Women's PU College, 2019-21-Batch, who talked about research and the scope and opportunities. The following person who talked was Ms. Jomol George, IV MA Economics Accenture 2020-22- Batch, who talked about how to prepare for an interview followed by a question-answer session. The session was ended by the vote of thanks given by Ms. Christy Johnson.


Crisis Analysis on Decoding Sri Lanka’s Economic Crisis
The Department of Economics organized a crisis analysis on the topic Decoding Sri Lanka’s Economic crisis on 28th of March 2022.The students of MA Economics actively participated in the event. They pointed out the period of economic slowdown characterised by declining productivity and devaluing of financial institutions often due to reckless and unsustainable money lending. They opined that, the crisis has been mainly caused by a shortage of foreign exchange reserves. Srilankans have dropped 70% in two years to just $2 billion at the end of February, which can barely cover two months of imports. Meanwhile, the country has foreign debt obligations of about $7 billion this year. There was an interaction session, wherein the moderator Dr.K Vinodha Devi, Head, Department of Economics has answered the queries of the Students.


World Theatre Day Industry Analysis#1 on Indian Film Industry
The Department of Economics organized an Industry analysis on Indian film industry on the eve of World theatre day on 28th of March 2022.The students of II MA Economics actively participated in the event. The Students highlighted the importance of art forms and focused on the importance of the value of art forms. The day holds significance because people are made aware of the medium, efforts and each artists’ contribution in putting the act up. The Students shared wishes and also spread awareness about the day. They further advocated that, the film industry can be a very effective and important instrument in bringing about social and economic reforms in the country by pin pointing the evils existing in the society like dowry, bonded labor, exploitation of the workers, and need to bring a sense of responsibility towards the nation.


Community Enrichment Programme “Sashakth 2”
The Department of Economics Organized an Orphanage visit, ‘Sashakth 2’a community enrichment programme as a part of Social outreach programme.Faculty members of Department of Economics and the students of MA Economics visited the orphanage by 12.00 p.m. About 17 Students of MA Economics & two faculty members actively engaged in this programme. On behalf of the Department of Economics, food items and financial aid were provided to the children of the orphanage Centre. This contribution was of great help to them as it met some of the basic necessities of the children and old aged, leading their lives in the trust. Apart from the contribution, the students also spent their time interacting with the orphanages. The programme was ended by 5.00 pm.


International Day of Happiness a Happiness Challenge for UG and PG Students
Department of Economics Celebrated the International Day of Happiness, by organizing a happiness challenge for the Undergraduate and Post Graduate students of Economics on 19th March 2022 from 11.30 am till 12.30 pm. The International Day of Happiness is an UN-sponsored annual event that encourages happiness as an universal human right. It also highlights how important happiness is to humanity. The tenacity of the International Day of Happiness is to increase an awareness on the worth of happiness in one's life and the overall influence it can have on a person's well-being. The Students of the Department of Economics have conducted various fun games namely, passing the parcel of happiness and making happiness pyramid, conducted quizzes and suggested to practice daily gratitude, surround with positive people, practice regular acts of kindness, spend more time with family and friends and invest in experiences, not objects.


Corporate Training Programme on Transfer Pricing
Department of Economics Organized a corporate training programme on transfer pricing on 26th February 2022 from 11.00 AM till 12.00 PM. B.Lekha Advanced Tax Analyst, Transfer Pricing & Earnst,was the Resource person. The session started off with an introduction of the Resource person. The Resource Person began discussion with the meaning of transfer pricing that, the value which is attached to the goods or services transferred between related parties.

She further discussed on stock market, interview techniques and technical skills required for the job aspirants. The session was ended with a question answering session wherein the resource person answered the doubts of the participants.

Mr.Mudunuru Vijay Chand (Tax Analyst Ernst & Young (EY) Bangalore) was the Resource Person. The Programme started at 12.00 P M.The students of II MA Economics have actively participated in the event. Mr.Mudunuru Vijay Chand suggested the students improve communication, research, and computer expertise to obtain better corporate openings. There was an interface session wherein, students posed the various question and the resource person elucidated all of them.


Siksaka Divas – Teachers’ Day Celebration Economic Influencers of 21st Century Know the Teachers
Department of Economics, organized a quiz event, “Quizonomics” as part of Siksaka Divas – Teachers’ Day Celebration commemorating Economic Influencers Of 21st Century - Know The Teachers, on 7th September 2021 for BA Economics students. Mr. Sanjay Singh and Ms. Tesma Jomin of 3rdSem MA Economics were the quiz coordinators. A total of 25 students who registered for the event appeared for the preliminary round. The students were split into teams of 3. The question paper containing 15 MCQs were distributed and a time limit of 10 minutes was allotted. From the 8 teams, 3 teams were eliminated based on their scores in the prelims. The stage session consisted of 4 rounds. First round was the Mind Fest, followed by picture quiz, audio round and rapid fire. Students were exposed to valuable insights on eminent teachers in the field of Economics

Department of Economics organized “Book Review – An Interview with the Author of Macro Economics: An Introduction, Cambridge University Press” on 6 th September 2021.The resource person was the author of the Book Dr. Alex Thomas, School of Arts & Sciences, Azim Premji University. He briefed about what made him to write the book. Ms Jomol Geroge, II MA Economics interviewed the author on the several aspects of the macro concepts illustrated in the book. Dr. Alex Thomas opined that the book provides a lucid and novel introduction to macroeconomic issues. It introduces the reader to an alternative approach of understanding macroeconomics, which is inspired by the works of Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Karl Marx, John Maynard Keynes, and Piero Sraffa. It also presents the reader with a critical account of mainstream marginalist macroeconomics. The interviewer asked various questions on Marginal economic thoughts, Marxism, Pluralistic approach, Data Management, Meso approach and contribution of Indian economic thinkers. All the questions were answered effectively by the Resource Person and the session came to an end with a Q & A session.

Panel Discussion on ‘Future of Indian Economy Strategic Outlook 2035’

Department of Economics organized a student panel discussion on ‘Future of Indian Economy Strategic Outlook 2035’ on the eve of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav ’75th Independence Day Celebration on 14th August 2021. Dr.Janakiraman was the Moderator and Tesma Jomin, Lourembam Anirjeet Singh, Neema Nibu and Aarya Rajjive, students of final year MA Economics were the four panelists for the discussion. The four panelists discussed four different aspects of economic strategies required for attaining future economic development of the Indian economy.

Tesma Jomin started the panel discussion by bringing forth several vital factors on up skilling and reskilling critical for Skill India. She suggested that, up skilling of Youths in the Nation would help to attain specialization and a rise in National Productivity. The second Panelist Anirjeet discussed on Energy efficiency and green growth. He recommended that, improving productivity by generating motivation for greater efficiency in the use of natural resources, reducing waste and energy consumption, revealing chances for innovation and value creation, and allocating resources to the highest value use. The third panelist, Neema Nibu, discussed on ‘Self-reliant India’. She suggested that, by taking the initiative focuses on stimulating the economy, promoting domestic production, generating employment, supporting start-ups and growing enterprises, establishment supply chains and enabling people. The fourth panelist, Aarya Rajjive, discussed on ‘Women in the forefront of Economic Prosperity’. She suggested that, women should be given importance and to be strengthen their visibility and representation; prioritize asset development, including capital, securing land and inheritance rights, and skill building programs, including financial literacy and management skills in order to attain Prosperity of the Nation. The panel discussion concluded with Dr.Janakiraman, moderator of the event by giving significant insights and thoughts on the topics discussed.

The Economics club had organized expert talk on the topic 'Journey towards Freedom from Poverty: An Alternative Policy for India'. The event began with a silent note of prayer, followed by welcome speech given by Leanne Deborah Thomas. Rahul T Sangma introduced the resource person. The expert talk was given by Dr. Shobana Nelasco, Head and Associate Professor, Research Center of Economics, Fatima College, Madurai, Tamil Nadu, Former Faculty Fellow of UGC, ICSSR and London School of Economics and Political Science, London.

The talk started with a brief data explanation of disease, poverty, hunger and death in India. The Suresh Tendulkar Committee of 2005 and schemes that it included were discussed. The speaker updated about the various Centrally sponsored schemes as an alternative policy towards freedom from poverty. Resource person also briefed about the necessity to adopt Universal Basic Income(UBI) approach. The talk was ended with a quote by Swami Vivekananda, “Society does not go down because of the activities of criminals, but because of the inactivities of good people.”

Faculty of Economics department, students from 3rd and 5th Semester of EPsS, HEP and JEEng and students of MA Economics attended the webinar. The webinar was concluded with a vote of thanks by Aakash Shree.

The Department of Economics organized a guest lecture on the topic “The gender gap in employment: What’s holding women back?” on 31th August 2020. The resource person Dr.Kavitha Mary spoke about the “The gender gap in employment, which would arise due to the factors pulling women back-in and not to participate in employment than that of man. She emphasized that when women are educated and employed, their autonomy and decision making power widens in the society.

The resource person Dr.Kavitha Mary also discussed the importance of education and empowerment of women especially in rural areas in India and opined that, there is a need to change certain stereotypes and customs which restrict girls and women from actively involving in employment activities.

She has also spoke on a great length about the labour performance gender participation rate (LEPR) and the report of ILO (Indian Labour Organization) which focuses on the low rate of involvement of women labourers in India. She urged for an involvement of female work force in the Indian economy to increase the volume of productivity and finally the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Finally, students have raised certain questions, the resource person answered all the queries. The session ended with the vote of thanks proposed by Dr.Raju V, Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, Kristu Jayanti College by 11.30 am.

The moderator divided the students into two groups and conducted a panel discussion on the prescribed topic. Students participated actively and expressed their views on the new education policy 2020.

Participants had a discussion on the importance of new education policy which is a need of the hour as we need to change the old and outdated mode of education in India.

The another set of students opined that, new education policy would impart a new era in the field of education of our nation which would enhance job oriented skills among the youth. Especially in certain areas of the current system of education in India, there is a need to alter the stereotype and traditional pattern of education. Finally the moderator answered for the questions of both the teams and the session came to an end by 3pm.

The Department of Economics and the Department of Law, Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous) jointly organized an online guest lecture on the topic “Patent Registration Process”, on 14th August 2020. The resource person was Ms.Anjali Suresh, Senior Associate, Banana IP Counsels, Bengaluru.

The resource person spoke about the process of the patent registration in India. The speaker emphasized that patents are important because it provide incentives to individuals by offering them both recognition for their creativity and material reward for their marketable inventions. The resource person explained on prior art search before applying for patent right. She also emphasized the pre-requisites of the patentability such as patentable subject matter, industrial applicability, novelty, inventive step and specification. Almost 160 participants have attended the webinar, which focused on the rules, regulations and methods in process of the patent. The resource person Ms.Anjali Suresh also cleared the questions asked by the students and faculty members. At the end there was a meaningful conversation between the guest and the audience and the program came to an end by 1:00 pm.

The title of the session was “Yoga to boost Immune System: Self-care during Pandemic”.On 29th August 2020. The Yoga Instructor was Ms. Tejaswi V who was a professional Yoga trainer and cofounder of fitNcalm, a Bangalore based start-up. Dr.K Vinodhadevi, Course coordinator has welcomed Ms.Tejaswi V with a fabulous welcome speech and also introduced her to the participants.

Ms. Tejaswi V, performed Yoga asanas, which included various poses of yoga through Zoom platform for the students and faculty members. Yoga session was focused on ways to attain physical, mental strength and also to have a peaceful mind and body. She also emphasised that, Yoga asanas build strength, flexibility and confidence among the people.

Ms. Tejaswi V answered questions asked by the students and faculty members pertaining to the applicability of yoga in our routine life.

The Department of Economics and the Department of Law, Kristujayanti College (Autonomous) jointly organized an online guest lecture on the topic “Patent Registration Process”, on 14th August 2020. The resource person was Ms.Anjali Suresh, Senior Associate, Banana IP Counsels, Bengaluru.

The resource person spoke about the process of the patent registration in India. The speaker emphasized that patents are important because it provide incentives to individuals by offering them both recognition for their creativity and material reward for their marketable inventions. The resource person explained on prior art search before applying for patent right. She also emphasized the pre-requisites of the patentability such as patentable subject matter, industrial applicability, novelty, inventive step and specification. Almost 160 participants have attended the webinar, which focused on the rules, regulations and methods in process of the patent. The resource person Ms.Anjali Suresh also cleared the questions asked by the students and faculty members. At the end there was a meaningful conversation between the guest and the audience and the program came to an end by 1:00 pm.

Objective: To familiar with intellectual property rights and its significance on pharmaceutical industry in India.

The Department of Economics organized an online expert talk on the topic “Intellectual Property Rights & Indian Pharmaceutical Industry: The Key Challenges”, on 12th February 2020. The Resource person was Dr.T.Purushoth Prabhu, Professor & HOD, C.L.Baid Metha College of Pharmacy, Chennai.

The resource person Dr. Purushoth Prabhu talked very elaborately about the “Intellectual Property Rights and Indian Pharmaceutical Industry”. He emphasized the significance of IPR in Indian Pharmaceutical Industry and explained that Patents provide pharmaceutical companies exclusive rights to market drugs and prevent others to manufacture, sell, and make these drugs for a period of 20 years. IPR is a prerequisite for pharmaceutical companies for identification, planning, commercialization, and protection of invention. He emphasized the role of the Intellectual Property rights in providing medicine at a cheaper price to the common people. He explained all the pros and cons of IPR and challenges in pharmaceutical industry. The resource person discussed about the various life-saving medicines which are patented. He also answers the doubts and questions raised by the students and faculty members. This online expert talk on intellectual property rights enriched and enlightens the knowledge of M.A Economics students about the significance of IPR especially in Pharmaceutical industry. At the end there was a meaningful conversation between the guest and the audience and the program came to an end by 3:00 pm.

Objective:
1. To provide an opportunity to the students to gain practical skills and be exposed to the current affairs.
2. To create a platform for the PG students to interact each other and share their ideas and enable them to understand the economic system of our country.
Outcome:
1. Enable the students to understand, whether any political strategies behind the increase in the price of Onion or scarcity of Onion due to natural reasons.
2. Evaluate the economic system of our country with respect to inflation to recommend measures.

The students of IV M.A Economics have participated in the colloquium on the topic “Rising Onion price-Politics or Economics”. All the students came forward and expressed their views on the topic in their own way. The session was started at 11 AM and completed by 1 PM.Students”colloqium also has created a platform for the PG students to interact each other and share their ideas. The students enjoyed every moment of the colloquium.

The Department of Economics organized a live streaming of the Union Budget 2020 on 1 February 2020. The Budget was telecast live where the students listened to the Budget Speech delivered by the Hon. Finance Minister Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman in the class room. The students of I & II year have got to know the major highlights of the budget and possible impacts of the budget on India's economy. The students are made a note on both positive and negative aspects of the budget.

The Department of Economics and Department of Commerce (PG), Kristu Jayanti College Autonomous organised an expert talk on Union Budget 2020 on 3th February 2020. The venue was Mini Auditorium of the Admin Block and the progamme began at the scheduled time at 3:30 pm. The resource person was Mr. Sandeep Jhunjhunwala, Director-Tax, Bengaluru. Sir talked about various new aspects of the budget and the new schemes which were introduced based on the major 3 themes. He also devoted a major part of his speech discussing about the reforms in the tax regime and stressed that the current budget did not come up with any substantial reforms. The event came to an end with a question and answer session between the expert and the audience. There was many thoughtful questions asked by the MA Economics and M.com students on budget in line with economic development.


Student Presentation: Union Budget 2020-21

The presentation on the topic “Union Budget 2020-2021” was conducted for 1st and 2nd year students of Commerce PG and MA Economics. Throughout the presentation the presenters brought out various relevant information from the union budget plan 2020-2021. The presenter gave more information regarding the tax reform set by the new budget which will stimulate growth, simplify the tax structure, improve ease of living and reduce litigation. The next presenter Mr.VIJAY CHAND (18CM401003) laid out the results of the survey conducted on the ‘Expectations of Budget 2020-21’. With 250 samples collected from the survey conducted, the result was quite unsatisfactory as the expectations of the people and the reality of the budget was vastly different. The presentation on three prominent theme of the budget, “Aspirational India”, ”Economic development” and ”Caring society”, where the budget stressed on providing better standards of living with access to health, education and better jobs for all section of the society.

The Presentation was concluded by a debate between two teams, the first team headed by Mr.SAGAR RAJENDRAN (18CM401004) & Mr.JAMES JOHNSON (19CM401001) provided substantial ground on the positive aspects of the Union Budget. While the opposition team was headed by Mr.SUYASH VERMA (18CM401005) & Miss.SHEETHAL (19CM401006) who argued against the statement put forwarded by the other side and stand firmed that ‘The budget was long on words but short on numbers’.


Social Outreach Programme - Orphanage Visit
Date: August 31st, 2019.

Name and Address of Orphanage: REFUGE FOUNDATION, KOTHANUR, BANGALORE.
Objectives of the Visit:
1. To create social responsibility among the students of MA Economics.
2. To make students a socially responsible citizens.

Social Outreach Program aims to encourage the participation of the collegiate level community (students, parents, teachers, staff, personnel and alumnae) in social development work and collaborate with community-based organizations and institutions in their efforts to promote a just, loving, equitable, and humane society. The Students of Department of Economics taken for an orphanage visit as part of the Social Outreach Programme. The purpose of the visit is to expose the students towards social responsibility. The students with 4 faculty members have reached the orphanage home at 10 AM in the morning. The children’s of the home welcomed our students. There were 25 children’s aged between 4 years to 12 years, the MA students had an introduction session with them. The students enquired about their studies and grade. Students have conducted drawing competition to all the children’s. Prizes and gifts are awarded to the winners and participants of the game. Followed by that, the students conducted some games such as musical chair, dodge ball and singing talents etc. All the kids in the home were actively participated in the competition and game. Gifts and Sweets where distributed to the children’s after the game. The programme reminds the students about their social responsibility. After spending some fruitful time in the home, the students left the home by 12.30 pm with lot of experience.


Student Colloquium I - Debate
Title: $ 5 Trillion Indian Economy – Dream Or Reality

Name and Details of the Moderator: Dr. Siva Subramanian, Faculty, Department of Economics.
Objective: To provide an exposure towards the current status of Indian Economy.

Department of Economics organized a debate on the topic of “$ 5 TRILLION INDIAN ECONOMY – DREAM OR REALITY”. The debate started by 2.30 p.m. with the general introduction about the topic, followed by that instructions were given to the participants. A lot has been discussed and debated on the development target of $ 5 trillion Indian Economy by 2024. The students debated about the current economic problems India is facing and stated that more investment is needed in infrastructure development like education and health. The student’s emphasis on inclusive growth and rural connectivity and stated that it is becoming a big challenge for the growth of the economy. The major points discussed in the debate were impact of demonetization and GST; Slowdown of GDP growth, global recession, jobless growth, Sick PSEs, Privatization, Stagnation of Make in India campaign and diplomacy in International Trade. 13 students as two different teams compete through three different rounds of argument, giving persuasive speeches on this topic. This event tests the confidence and in-depth knowledge of PG students on the recent economics topics.


Community Engagement Programme
Title: Report On Orphanage Visit

Objectives: 1. To create social responsibility among the students of MA Economics.
2. To entertain the students to involve in community engagement programmes.

Department of Economics organized a Community Engagement Programme- Orphanage Visit to expose the students towards social responsibility. The students with 4 faculty members have reached the orphanage home at 11 AM in the morning. The children’s of the home welcomed our students. There were 25 children’s aged between 4 years to 12 years, the MA students had an introduction session with them. The students enquired about their studies and grade. Followed by that, the students conducted some games such as musical chair, dodge ball and singing talents etc. All the kids in the home were actively participated in the game. Gifts and Sweets where distributed to the children’s after the game. After the games, students and the children’s of the home played Guitar and sang songs for the children’s. The programme reminds the students about their social responsibility. After spending some fruitful time in the home, the students left the home by 2 pm with lot of experience.

Industrial Visit - Nabard
The Students of 1st and 2nd year MA Economics visited the NABARD Karnataka Regional Office on 21st August, 2018. The students were accompanied by Prof. Neeta Dwivedi, Coordinator, Department of Economics, Kristu Jayanti College.

The formal programme commenced at 10:30am with the screening of an award winning video on NABARD. This was followed by an elaborate presentation by Mr. Nirmal Kumar, Assistant General Manager, NABARD on the functions and responsibilities of NABARD.

After the presentation, the other resource persons, Mr. Uday Bhaskar, Mr. A.V Joshi and Mr. Sudarshan enlightened the students on the role that NABARD plays as the ‘Development Bank of the Nation for fostering rural prosperity’.

Towards the end, the students put forward their queries which were beautifully and precisely answered and clarified by the resource persons. The session came to an end at 1:00 pm with the vote of thanks proposed by Mr. Sunon Zhimo (2nd year, MA Economics).

VICHAARMANTHAN
TITLE: “DEMONETIZATION: WHAT NEXT?”
The thirty-fourth edition of ‘Vichaarmanthan’, an interaction with global visionaries, was conducted by the Department of Economics on 31 August 2017. The chief guest for the programme was Shri Rama Subramaniam Gandhi, the Former Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, addressed the students on the relevant topic “demonetization, what next?”

Shri R.S Gandhi commenced the session with a brief talk on whether demonetization has been a boon or a bane for the country. He threw light on the various objectives of demonetization, which were to eliminate black money, fight against counterfeit notes and avoid financing of criminal activities. He also discussed the challenges faces by the Central Bank and the sensitivity they possess against black money and counterfeiting of notes.
