Renjith from IIM Ranchi, Jharkhand on February 15, 2024. Dr. Renjith explored the crucial dimensions of financial accessibility for small enterprises, utilizing spatial econometrics to unravel the geographical intricacies influencing their dynamics. IInd Semester MA and IV Semester MA students gained valuable insights into the challenges faced by small firms in securing finances and the spatial patterns shaping their growth. The interactive session, enhanced by a lively Q&A, deepened participants' understanding of the subject, providing practical implications for policymakers and researchers. The event, owing to Dr. Renjith's expertise and the active engagement of the students made a substantial contribution to the discourse on small business finance and spatial dynamics.

Expert Talk on Economics of Labour Rights: Constitutional Provisions and Protections

The Department of Economics organized an expert lecture on the Economics of Labour Rights, with a special focus on constitutional provisions and protections. This event took place on September 19, 2023, and was tailored specifically for postgraduate Economics students. The keynote speaker for this lecture was Professor Manjunath M. S., an Assistant Professor at Kristu Jayanti College of Law. During the talk, Professor Manjunath underscored the pivotal role played by constitutional provisions, notably Article 14, within the context of labour rights in India. Prof. Manjunath elucidated the critical importance of these provisions for workers and their rights pertaining to their work. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students in both the first and third semesters of the Master of Arts in Economics program. They acquired invaluable insights into the constitutional provisions relevant to labour practices in India. The talk culminated with an interactive session during which the resource person addressed a range of queries posed by the students, facilitating a deeper comprehension of the subject matter.


Expert Talk on the Role of Intellectual Property Rights in Research and Innovation

The Department of Economics has organised an expert lecture on ‘The Role of Intellectual Property Rights in Research and Innovation’ in collaboration with the IPA Cell, Centre for Research on 31st August 2023 for Economics students. The Resource Person was Prof. Dr. Mohan Rao Bolla, Principal, Kristu Jayanti College of Law. The Resource Person pointed out the importance of Intellectual Property Rights in general and particularly in India and about the commercialisation of Intellectual Property Rights in a very interesting manner. Students of I Sem and III Sem M A Economics and III Sem B A Applied Economics participated in the program and received an insight about Intellectual Property Rights. The session ended with an interface session wherein the resource person answered all the queries of the participants.

Attendees gained insights into real-world applications and the potential economic opportunities they entail. The interactive session that followed allowed attendees to engage directly with Mr. Naveen Hari, clarifying doubts and deepening their understanding. The event succeeded in enlightening participants about Economics' multifaceted role and its global impact.


Expert Lecture on Global Perspectives Of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGS) in Commemorating Independence Day

The Department of Economics has organised an expert lecture in commemorating the 77th Independence Day, on the topic, “Global Perspectives of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).” This event served as an innovative way to promote patriotism and educate participants about the country’s history and culture. The resource person was Dr.S Venkataraman, a Senior Consultant, at UNESCO.

The Resource person opined that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim to eradicate poverty, hunger, AIDS, and discrimination against women and girls, requiring collective creativity, technology, and financial resources. He further stated that Development is a continuous process that reflects the social and natural environment, resulting in changes in social relations, structure, and institutions. Expert Lecture on Employment Protection Regulation and Farm Behavior: Findings of A Natural Experiment f02rMayo Sothern Indian States

Department of Economics has organised an expert lecture on Employment protection regulation and farm behavior: findings of a Natural Experiment from two Sothern Indian States for the students of MA Economics on the second of May. The Resource Person was Dr. Naveen Joseph Thomas, Associate Professor, at Jindal School of Government and Public Policy India. The Resource person opined that Employment protection legislation (EPL) has both positive and negative effects on labor market performance, with the former benefiting long-term employee-employer contracts and the latter diminishing firms' ability to cope with globalization. He suggested that the government should take initiatives to increase the efficiencies of the farm workers and provide them skill set. Lecture Series - Gender-Specific Indicators

The Department of Economics organized a SDG Lecture Series on “Gender Specific Indicators” for the Students of MA Economics, on 26th April 2023. The Resource Person was Ms.Ramya Emandi, Statistics International Consultant N Women HQ, New York, United States. She stressed that Gender-sensitive indicators allow for the measurement of changes in the relations between women and men in a certain policy area, Programme, or activity, as well as changes in the status or situation of women and men. She further discussed that, Gender-related Development Index, Gender Empowerment Measure, Gender Equity Index, Global Gender Gap Index, and Social Institutions and Gender Index.

Expert Talk on Public Finance Management in Action: A Contemporary Application of Theory to Policy

The Department of Economics, Kristujayanti College, (Autonomous) Bangalore, organized an expert talk on the topic, “Public finance management in action: A contemporary application of theory to policy”, on 24/04/2023 at 2 pm-3 pm on Zoom Platform. The Resource Person Dr.Anirudha Barik, Senior Economist, Economics and Public Policy, PWC, India deliberated on the impact of public finance on an economy and the role of public spending in attaining economic growth and development. He opined that the theory of public finance suggests that we should decide on a desired tax base and rate structure and then impose taxes accordingly. But tax codes are filled with additional provisions that seem to reflect ambivalence on the part of tax authorities. Mr. Anirudh stated that the Government should balance all the economic activities and attain the overall development of an economy. The session ended with a Q & A session.

Dr. (Ms.)Meenakshi Rajeev, Reserve Bank India Chair Professor, Bengaluru was the resource person and conducted a session for the students of I B A Applied Economics and MA Economics. The main objective of this Programme was to update information on the endeavors of Nobel laureates Ben Bernanke, Douglas Diamond and Philip Dybvigin solving economic problems. She emphasized the part played by the economists in solving the problem of recession from the 1930s great depression till 2009. She urged for a demand-based economy rather than a supply based economy in the Nation.

The Resource Person was Mr.Saidur Rahman, Professor, and Head, RCNMET, Sunway University, Malaysia.The resource person discussed the importance of research papers in the modern education system. He emphasized the techniques of writing high-quality research papers by selecting an adequate topic, objectives, and keywords. He focused on the need of writing and publishing papers. He opined that to seek project proposals, promotions, and academic enrichment writing research papers is essential. The Resource Person was Dr. S R Keshava, Professor, PG Department of Economics, Bangalore University and Technical Committee Member, Karnataka Evaluation Authority (KEA). Prof. S R Keshava discussed the impact of education on economic development. He emphasized on the role of education in attaining economic development. SDG Lecture Series I on Economic Growth and Human Development: Myths and Realities
Department of Economics organized SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) Lecture Series I on 3rd March 2022 from 4.00 pm till 5.00 pm. Prof.K Seeta Prabhu, Visiting Professor Tata Institute of Social Sciences, was the Resource person. The session started off with an introduction of the Resource person. The Resource Person opined that, SDGs shall not be seen as mere extension of the MDGs as they are targeting ‘Sustainable, inclusive and sustained economic growth, shared prosperity and decent work for all’. She urged that, the Government has to ensure, removal of Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-being, Quality Education, Gender Equality, Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy and Decent Work and Economic Growth.

Panel Discussion on “Budget 2022 – The Way Forward”
Department of Economics Organized a Panel discussion on the topic, “Budget 2022-The way forward”, on 10th February 2022.The discussion involved two moderators Ms. Jomol George and Ms.Tesma Jomin from the II MA Economics, with six panelists from VI Semester BA, Department of Economics. The session began with a welcome speech delivered by Mr. Christy Johnson followed by an introductory speech by Ms Tesma Jomin. The six panelists, Joel John, Iniya Lakshmi, Chendoor, SanjayJayakumar, Gayatri and Keren Mary presented on the topics, Health and manufacturing sector, allocation of the budget for the infrastructure and the education sector, crypto currency, defense and energy sector, agriculture and employment, startups and business respectively.Ms Jomol George has presented the concluding remarks and the session has ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Anitta Sunil.


Book Discussion on Urban Governance and Local Democracy in South India -Routledge India
Department of Economics Organized a Book Discussion on “Urban governance and local democracy in south India”-routledge India, on 4th February 2022.Dr.V Anilkumar, Associate Professor and Head, Centre for Political Institutions Governance and Development, Institute for Social and Economic change, was the Resource person. The session started off with an introduction of the Resource person. The Resource Person started analyzing the Urbanization and planning in South India, sustainability of cities and implementation of local democracy. He stated that, the urban governance and urban politics are highly neglected in Indian Political scenario. He opined that, emphasis should be given on the governance of smaller cities. Department of Economics Organized a Budget Lecture Series III on 4th February 2022 from 3.00 pm till 4.00 pm. Dr. Lekha S Chakraborty, Professor and Chair, NIPFP NET, National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, was the Resource person. The session started off with an introduction of the Resource person. The Resource Person opined that, the Economic Framework is a set of decision rules that align everyone to the financial goals of the elucidation and guide the economic decision-making procedure.

She stated that, a macro economic outline is a set of sectorial forecasts (for the factual, external, fiscal, and monetary sectors) reliable with each other, dependable with the policy outline, and stable with the macroeconomic goals.

She urged the government body to take a proper decision and implement in order to attain overall economic development.

Dr. Badri Narayanan Gopalakrishnan, Lead Adviser & Head, Trade & Commerce, NITI Aayog, Government of India was the Resource person.The session started off with an introduction of the Resource person. The Resource Person analyzed the implementation of the budget, which was presented on 1st February2022. Expert Talk on Street Harassment -Standup
Department of Economics Organized an expert lecture on “Street Harassment-Stand up ‘on 25th November 2021. Ms.Bisma Javed, Trainer, Breakthrough Trust, Women rights Organization, NewDelhi was the Resource person. The resource person started with the introduction of street harassment which includes undesirable comments, gestures, or acts engaged at someone in a public space deprived of their consent. Street harassment includes some of the following unwanted behaviors: Comments, requests, and demands. Commenting on physical appearances, such as someone's body or the clothing they're wearing. She further stated that the Indian Constitution provides that whoever commits, the offense of criminal intimidation shall be punished with custody of either description for a term which may extend to two years, or with fine, or with both. She urged the audience to create awareness among the men who are causing street harassment and to safeguard womenfolk. Finally, the session came to an end with an interaction session, wherein, the participants have posed various questions, and accordingly, the resource person clarified all of them.

Department of Economics Organized an expert talk on ‘Cryptocurrency-The game changer ‘on 26th October 2021. Dr. Baba Gnanakumar P (Professor & Director, Centre for Consultancy and Corporate Training) was the Resource person. The resource person started with an introduction and relevance of Crypto currency for the current economic world. He pointed out that, A crypto currency or crypto is a gathering of binary data which is calculated to work as an intermediate of exchange wherein individual coin possession records are deposited in a record which is an online database using strong cryptography to secure business records, to control the creation of additional and to verify the transfer of coin ownership. Department of Economics organized an Expert Talk on “Recent Trends in Labour Migration” on 24th September 2021. Dr.D.Kavitha Mary (Assistant Professor, Department of Economics, Loyola College, Chennai) was the resource person. The resource person started the discussion on the causes of recent trends in labour migration. She stressed the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on employment opportunities in the Global as well as Indian economy. She opined that pandemic has been led to reverse migration from Industry to the agriculture sector in search of livelihood and also compared the agriculture scenario of pre-independent and Post independent Indian economy. She concluded that the Government will have to implement adequate measures to reduce the severe impact of the post-pandemic situation in the Indian economy. He suggested the use of information technology in business operations to maximize profits. Copyright may apply to a wide range of creative, intellectual, or artistic works from the moment the work is “fixed in concrete form.” Trademarks are perceptible signs that differentiate specific products or services from others. Department of Economics organized an employability enhancement programme on “Career in Economics” on August 4th, 2021. Dr. Shashi Panikar, The Economic Club, Mumbai addressed the students of Department of Economics through online mode.

Dr. Shashi Panikar addressed the students on recent career opportunities in Economics. The resource person highlighted that enhancing the mathematical and statistical tool is essential for enhancing the career opportunities of economics students. He opinioned that the students must focus on multiple elements like project work, internship, online courses and short-term courses during their graduation period. He also stated that the students must empower themselves by developing their overall personality by enhancing their entrepreneurship skill, public speaking skill and employability skills. Dr. Shashi Panikar said that the real test for the student is to continuously update himself and be competent and relevant. He highlighted the various fields which would generate employment opportunities in future like Market Research, KPOs, E-content development, Economic analysts, Banking and so on. Centre For Soft Skills Training (CSST) Webinar on Resume Building
The Department of Economics (PG), Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru, organized a Placement orientation training programme on the topic, “Get ready for the interview” for all the students of Post-Graduation. (Except MBA) on 16/11/2020. The objective of conducting this session was to enhance profifency, acquaintance and capabilities of the students, which would enable them to seek job openings.

Prof.Sen B Mathews, Associate Professor & Director - Centre for Employability and Corporate Relations, Kristu Jayanti College Bengaluru was the resource person. 218 participants, including all Post graduate students (Except MBA students) attended the programme.

Resource person spoke about the most significant purpose of resume building that, kind of profession students are looking for, skills and experiences they have, which make ideal for their career to present students’ education and abilities to the employers. He also pointed out that, resume is an informational document, which comprises one’s career story, outlining and all in an easily read format.

Participants on their feedback for the programme commented that, they got a clarity on the importance of resume writing and were encouraged to attend placement events in the campus. It was a great opportunity to learn about the importance of resume building and the skills required for attending interviews. This session made students capable of appearing for interviews with confidence. The Department of Economics (PG), Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru, organized a Webinar on the topic, “Nobel laureate Prof.Amartyasen-Human face of Economics on 03/11/2020. This session was based on an online survey done by the post graduate students on what the common people expected and what was the reality. The survey was done on the basis of 10 questions covering various sectors and expectations of the public and the survey was successful and got responds from more than 300 peoples covering all frameworks of peoples and the students also enjoyed the session.
SESSION 2:
Next session was all about positive aspects of the budget 2020-21 , mainly covered all the development agendas presented by the finance minister Mrs Nirmala Sitharaman and important areas where improvement is required like doubling the farmers income by 2022 and also improvement in infrastructure and providing jobs from public works were the keynote of the session.
SESSION 3:
Session 3 was all about the negative aspects of the budget 2020-21. The keynote criticism of the session was that it neglected the travel and tourism sector which was also one of the important sources of income for the government and this budget also neglected the present automobile crises which also affected many other industries.

The program commenced with a welcome address by Mr. Vijay, Student, II MA Economics followed by a brief introduction of the resource person. Dr. M. Balasubramanian started the session with one of the key environmental issue, the loss of natural resources of India in the name of economic development. He presented the estimates of social and financial costs of environmental damage in the country. Followed by that he narrated how estimating environmental value losses will help in calculating Green GDP. He emphasised that deforestation or cutting down of forests; results in a major loss of resources like wood, paper etc. It also causes global warming and rise in pollution levels. He ended the lecture by stating that the growth cannot sustain with this environmental degradation. An interactive session was held for clarifying the doubts of the students.

A Guest lecture on “An Analysis of the Impact of New Reforms on the Banking Sector” was organized on 16 July 2019 from 3 pm to 4 pm. The session started with the welcome address by Mr. Vijay, III Sem MA Economics followed by that Mr. Jacob Issac Kunnil, who is presently the Senior Manager, Kothanur Branch, South Indian Bank took over the session. In his lecture, Mr. Jacob spoke mainly about the non-performing assets (NPAs) and how it is weakening the banking system of India. He commented that NPAs are like a double-edged sword for a bank as on one hand the bank is not receiving back the lent out money and on the other it has to pay for these defaults from its own profit. He further spoke about the new policies and bodies that are put in place to solve the problem of NPAs. The Securitization and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Securities Interest Act (SARFAESI Act) and the role of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) were highlighted. An interactive session was held for clarifying the doubts of the students. The session came to an end with the vote of thanks and a memento was presented as a small token of appreciation to the valuable resource person.

Department of Economics organized an expert lecture on “Budget 2019-20” on 6th July, 2019. The resource persons for this lecture were Mr. Sudhakar G, Director, Taxation, Deloitte and Mr. Bharath HP, Partner, Tax and Regulatory, 4i Advisory Services.

The resource persons addressed the students of II year MA Economics, M.Com and M.Com (FA). Mr. Sudhakar started the session by providing a general overview of the budget allocations under different heads. He then focused his presentation on the direct and indirect taxes and expressed his views on how it will impact the corporate sector and also the common man. He mentioned that faceless assessment is one of the plus points of this budget. Also, Mr. Bharath elucidated the topic of Angel Tax and its impact on start-ups. Their presentation ended with a question-answer session with the audience. The audience put forth questions not only with regard to taxes but also from diverse topics like petrol price hike, affordable housing and unemployment.

Department of Economics organized a Guest Lecture on “Sub-structure of Banking Discipline” by expert resource persons Mr. Jose P Varghese, Joint General Manager, Regional Office, South Indian Bank, and Mrs. Shruti, Assistant Manager, South Indian Bank, Christ University Branch. Mr. Jose gave insight into risk-return tradeoff and Non-Performing Assets with their effects on banks. The role of Debt Recovery Tribunal and SARFAESI Act, 2002 was brought into picture with regard to recovering loans from defaulters. Further, Mr. Jose gave suggestions about future career and personality development. Mrs. Shruti presented a talk on the history and technological advancement in Banking. The session was quite interactive for students and faculty members.

Balasubramanian, Assistant Professor, Centre for Ecological Economics and Natural Resources (CEENR), ISEC, Bangalore. Dr. M.Balasubramanian is one of eminent resource persons in India in the field of Environmental Economics specialized in Green Accounting, Natural Resource and Environmental Economics, Cimate Change, Solid Waste Management, Environmental Policy, Sustainable Development and Sustainability and Urban Ecology.

Dr.M.Balasubramanian addressed the students of I and II year MA Economics and explained the concept of Natural capital and its valuation in the modern world in very systematic and research oriented manner. Department of Economics organized a Guest Lecture on "Classical Economics-History, Theory & Policy." for the students of MA economics by an expert resource person Dr. Alex M. Thomas, Assistant Professor, Azim Premji University. Dr. Alex demystified the classical economics. In session started with discussion on book of Thomas Piketty 'Capital' and followed by the discussion on the major ideas about Classical, Marginal, Keynesian, Marxian and Behavioral school with lucid examples. Lecture emphasized on the work of Sraffa and Kalecki. The session was quite interactive for students and faculties.


Online Trading
Stock trading can be financially rewarding if done in the right way. Investing in the stock market involves riding the various ups and downs of the market. Since the introduction of online trading, investing in the stock market has become simple and convenient. Due to growing need of understanding online trading, Department of Economics organized a guest lecture on ‘Online Trading’ on 20th February 2018 for the students of MA Economics. Teachers and students were guided by an expert resource person Mr.Sunil Nayak, Cluster Manager, Karvy Commodities Ltd. In the beginning of the session, the advantages of trading were highlighted with special emphasis on use of technology to make trading simple and convenient. With the help of examples, the resource person has explained the way to start online trading with the expert help and the areas where one has to be careful while trading. The session was quite interactive and students had get their doubts clarified related with the online trading.

The Resource person of the session was Dr. M Seenuvasan, Assistant Advisor, Department of Economics & Policy Research, RBI, Bengaluru. The session started with a welcoming address by Ms. Susanna Sajeev, student of I MA Economics and then the session was taken over by him, starting with the recent policy changes of RBI, the Resource person opined that the major focus of monetary policy at present is leveraging the economic growth with stability and less inflation. He discussed about the fall of GDP after demonetization and very soon the economy is going to recover from this downfall. The session was quite interactive and went through doubts on current Bank rate, Repo rate, tools to control inflation, recent economic crisis and answers were given with practical examples. The students of M.A Economics were highly exposed to the recent monetary changes and its impact on the current economic environment. On January 11 2018, Department of Economics organized a guest lecture on ‘The Nuances of Banking’ .Teachers and students were guided by an expertise resource person Mr.Renil Raj, Manager at Indian Overseas Bank, under presence of our Department Coordinator Mrs. Neeta Dwivedi. The session was started with welcoming address by Ms.Deepa Das, student of 1st MA Economics and the session was taken over by him, starting with the main functions of bank and various aspects of working of a bank.

He also had given a brief about public sector banks and government regulation acts on banking and gone through the working of Indian Overseas Bank as a public sector commercial bank. He covered different types of loan and its interest rates and also specified about priority sectors where they can get subsidies, mainly agriculture sector. Different sectors of industries and allied loans do have its own impact on growth of banks.

As economics students each were able to gain new information and techniques of banking and its wide opportunities, especially for students who are into economics will be at ease under the working conditions of banks. He concluded with the IBPS banking test which is a gateway for banking profession.

The session was quite interactive and went through doubts on NPAs, farmer’s security, collateral based loans, weavering of loans and answers were given with practical examples which were reasonable.
