LMS Orientation
Date 31 August 2024
On 31st August 2024, two Learning Management System (LMS) Orientation sessions were held for first-year B.Sc. Forensic Science students. The first session took place from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, followed by another session from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM, each catering to different student groups. The orientation was designed to introduce students to the LMS platform, an essential tool for their academic success.

During both sessions, students were guided through the process of navigating the LMS, starting from login procedures to accessing course materials, submitting assignments, and participating in discussion forums. The orientation also highlighted important features such as grade tracking, notifications, and communication tools that would help students stay organized and engaged with their studies.

In addition to the platform's functionality, students were informed about the various support services available through the LMS, including access to technical assistance and academic resources. Each session concluded with a Q&A segment, allowing students to clarify their doubts and receive tailored guidance on using the LMS effectively.

The orientation successfully provided all first-year B.Sc. Forensic Science students with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate the LMS platform, ensuring they are well-prepared to manage their coursework throughout the academic year.


iOS and Android Forensics

Department of Forensic Science has organised a Guest lecture on April 18, 2024 by Prof. Gourav M. Rawal, a renowned expert in the field of cyber security, specifically focusing on iOS and Android forensic analysis. The lecture was organized for the students of M.Sc. Forensic Science Program, aiming to provide them with insights into the intricacies of mobile device forensics. Prof. Gourav M. Rawal's extensive expertise in cyber security and forensic analysis was evident throughout the lecture. As a national-level expert and trainer, his insights were invaluable to the audience. The lecture covered various aspects of iOS and Android forensic analysis, including but not limited to data extraction techniques, file system analysis, application data recovery, and security considerations unique to mobile devices. The lecture incorporated relevant case studies and examples to illustrate the practical applications of iOS and Android forensic techniques in criminal investigations, digital forensics, and incident response scenarios. It was highly informative and beneficial for the students as it provided them with valuable insights, practical skills, and a solid foundation in mobile device forensic analysis.


Applications of LC-MS

The Department of Forensic Science organized third session of International Guest lecture series on the "Applications of Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS)" on April 18, 2024. The event aimed to provide M.Sc. Forensic Science students with insights into the innovative applications of LC-MS technology in forensic analysis. Dr. Ravindra Singh Thakur, a distinguished Postdoctoral Fellow at The Ohio State University, USA, served as the keynote speaker for the session as he shared his expertise and knowledge on the topic, offering valuable insights derived from his extensive research experience.. He discussed the role of LC-MS in forensic toxicology, drug analysis, trace evidence analysis, and other areas of forensic investigation. Through case studies and examples, Dr. Thakur illustrated the practical implications of LC-MS techniques in solving real-world forensic cases. This session provided an invaluable opportunity for M.Sc. Forensic Science students to gain deeper insights into the applications of LC-MS.


International Guest Lecture on Quality Control In Forensic Science

The expert lecture for the international lecture series for the academic year 2024 – 2025 was organized by the Department of Forensic Science, Kristu Jayanti College, Autonomous on 16th march 2024 on the topic “quality control in forensic science”. The session was conducted online over the ZOOM platform.

Ms Sreekumar began by introducing the concept of quality control and its significance in today's forensic analysis. She highlighted how quality control involves the identification, preservation, and analysis of products to prevent mishap in the future. The speaker elaborated on the roles and responsibilities of a quality control professional. She discussed how these experts work with law enforcement agencies, corporations, and other organizations to ensure smooth analysis of the products before its launched in the market, and present their findings in a court of law. The speaker discussed the essential skills and qualifications required to pursue a successful career in quality control and toxicology field.

International Guest Lecture on "Paradigm Shift in Antidoping Analysis."

On September 29, 2023, an enlightening international guest lecture was hosted via Zoom, focusing on the topic "Paradigm Shift in Antidoping Analysis." The distinguished speaker for this event was Dr. Shobha Ahi, the Deputy Director of the Drug Control Centre, King's College, London.

Dr. Shobha Ahi's lecture covered various aspects of the paradigm shift occurring in antidoping analysis, focusing on advancements in technology, legal implications, and the impact on sporting communities worldwide. Some key highlights of the lecture includes Technological Advancements in Antidoping Analysis and Biological Passports and Athlete Biological Passport (ABP). The lecture delved into the concept of biological passports and the ABP, outlining how these innovative tools are transforming antidoping strategies. Dr. Ahi emphasized their role in providing a longitudinal profile of an athlete's biological markers, enhancing the detection of doping practices over time. The lecture concluded with a discussion on the future directions of antidoping analysis using dried blood spots (DBS), emphasizing the need for ongoing research, international collaboration, and regulatory adjustments to address emerging challenges in the field.


International Guest Lecture on "New Protocols of Alternative Light Source for Detecting Latent Biological Evidence on Items"

On September 25, 2023, an insightful international guest lecture was held via Zoom, focusing on the theme "New Protocols of Alternative Light Source for Detecting Latent Biological Evidence on Items." The distinguished speaker for this event was Dott Eugenio D'Orio, the Director of Bio Forensics Research in Italy. Dott Eugenio D'Orio's lecture provided valuable insights into the emerging protocols and methodologies utilizing alternative light sources for detecting latent biological evidence on various items.

The lecture commenced with an introduction to alternative light sources, explaining their significance and applications in forensic investigations. Dott D'Orio elucidated the different types of ALS and their varying wavelengths, emphasizing their utility in revealing latent biological evidence. The presentation showcased the latest protocols and techniques developed to optimize the detection of latent biological evidence using ALS. Dott D'Orio shared advancements in ALS technologies and protocols, demonstrating their efficacy in enhancing sensitivity and specificity in forensic examinations. Dott D'Orio presented a case study illustrating real-world applications of ALS in forensic investigations. These case examples showcased successful detections of latent biological evidence, highlighting the significance of ALS in solving criminal cases and advancing forensic science.


International Guest Lecture on "Forensic Analysis of Thermally Altered Bone Samples"

On September 2, 2023, an international guest lecture via Zoom on the topic of "Forensic Analysis of Thermally Altered Bone Samples." The lecture was delivered by Tristan Krap, an esteemed expert in the field of forensic anthropology. This event aimed to provide valuable insights to enhancing their knowledge in the area of forensic analysis of thermally altered bone samples.

Mr. Tristan Krap commenced the lecture by providing an overview of the significance of forensic analysis in identifying and examining thermally altered bone samples. He explained the critical role of forensic anthropology in solving complex criminal cases. The speaker discussed the heat induced changes of biophysical properties of bones and temperature specific spectral shift in luminescence of bones. Dr. Tristan Krap shared real-world case studies and examples to illustrate the application of forensic analysis to solve crimes involving thermally altered bone samples. The lecture also addressed the challenges and limitations encountered in the analysis of thermally altered bone samples, such as the effects of high temperatures on bone structure and the potential loss of crucial forensic evidence. Following the lecture, there was an interactive Q & A session where participants had the opportunity to ask questions and seek clarifications on the topics discussed.


Guest lecture on the topic "Application of Vibrational Spectroscopy in Forensic Anthropology

The Department of Forensic Science at Kristu Jayanti College organized a guest lecture on the topic "Application of Vibrational Spectroscopy in Forensic Anthropology" as part of its International Guest Lecture Series. The lecture was held on 19th August 2023 and featured Mr. Calil Makhoul, a distinguished PhD Scholar from the University of Coimbra, Portugal. The session was conducted online over the ZOOM platform.

Mr. Makhoul commenced the lecture by introducing the concept of vibrational spectroscopy. The speaker delved into the innovative applications of vibrational spectroscopy in forensic anthropology. He discussed how techniques such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy can be employed to analyze bones, teeth, and other biological materials, aiding in the identification of human remains and the determination of postmortem interval. The lecture explored the potential future directions of research in this field. Mr. Makhoul discussed the ongoing efforts to develop portable and field-friendly spectroscopic devices that can be used by forensic anthropologists during crime scene investigations.


Expert Lecture on Biological samples and Forensic analysis

The Department of Forensic Science, Kristu Jayanti College, Autonomous organised the third expert lecture for the academic year Jan-June 2023 on the theme "Biological sample and forensic analysis" on March 9th, 2023. The session was held online via the ZOOM platform. Dr. Ajay Kumar Rana, Scientist B, CFSL, Hyderabad, was the resource person. The session started with a brief introduction of the speaker to the audience. Soon later, the session was taken over by the resource person. Sir introduced Forensic Science and the first case of Julius Cesar in forensic evidence. Sri explained that biological samples were commonly detected blood, sperm, saliva, bone, flesh, bone, and saliva. Sir explained the notion of presumptive, confirmatory blood and species tests. . Sir also noted that FSL and CFSL removed blood grouping due to low discriminatory power. The secretors and non-secretors tests, as well as the saliva examination utilising the Phadebas test, were explained. Hair's position as an exhibit has been expanded. Microscopic study of spermatozoa, P30 immunoassays, and SERATEC for vaginal cell secretion have all been explained. Sir mentioned the reference samples acquired from the accused or victim as blood or cheek swab, as well as biological samples collected for DNA profiling on mobile phones, glass bottles, bite marks, toothbrushes, and so on. The DNA profiling procedures, types of DNA polymorphisms such as autosomal STR, Y STR, X- STR, DNA extraction methods, DNA quantification in kits quantifier HP and DNA Trio kit, DNA amplification by thermal cycler, and DNA amplification by thermal cycler are all explained in depth. Finally, the floor was offered for questions, and each question was enthusiastically accepted and appropriately answered.


Expert Lecture on Forensic aspects in Disaster victim Identification
Date: 09 March 2023
The department of forensic science, Kristu Jayanti College, Bangalore organized an expert lecture titled ‘Forensic aspects in Disaster victim Identification’ on 09/03/2023. The resource person for this session was Ms. Hansi Bansal, Assistant Professor, Government Institute of Forensic Science, Nagpur. The session was conducted online over the ZOOM platform.

The session highlighted the different tools and techniques available for disaster victim identification. The students of 6th semester BSc Forensic Science have a course titled ‘DNA Typing’ where disaster victim identification forms a major portion of their training.

The resource person started the lecture by explaining the need and significance of disaster victim identification. The Red Cross guidelines and the formation of a new division in forensic science called ‘humanitarian forensics’ was underlined.

The tools which were used traditionally and the newer more robust and skilled techniques were outlined and discussed in detail by the resource person. Tools like anthropology, DNA, heredity testing etc. were explained in great detail.

The resource person also outlined the case studies where these tools and techiques have been used in the recent past both in India and abroad.


Expert Lecture on Forensic Psychological Techniques in Forensic Investigation
Date: 17 February 2023
The expert talk on Forensic Psychological techniques in Forensic Investigation was held on 17th February 2023 with the resource person Dr. Priyanka Kacker, School of Forensic Psychology, National Forensic Sciences University, Gandhinagar. The session was aimed at orienting the students of IVth semester BSc Forensic Science to the different Forensic Psychology techniques used in forensic investigation.

Techniques like polygraph, narco-analysis and brain fingerprinting were discussed in detail by the resource person. The different strengths and weakness of each technique was explained with different case studies to help students understand the application of these techniques.

Legal admissibility of each technique was the next part of the lecture and the resource person took the students through the different landmark cases which led to use of these techniques in India and along side the different recent legal admissibility issues these techniques were held into were explained in great detail.

Students could also ask questions to the expert person and discus some of their queries. The session was interactive and much useful in strengthening the knowledge learnt by stduents through the curriculum during this semester.


Expert Lecture on Application of GC-MS in Antidoping Analysis
Date: 08 November 2022
The Department of Forensic Science, Kristu Jayanti College, Autonomous organized the second international lecture for the academic year 2022-2023 on the topic "Application of GC-MS in anti-doping analysis" on November 8, 2022. The session was held online using the ZOOM platform. Dr. Risha Jasmine Nathan, lecturer in chemistry at Anglia Ruskin University, was the resource person. The session began with a brief inaugural session during which the speaker was introduced to the audience. The resource person soon took over the session. Madam defined doping in sports and discussed the WADA 2022 list of prohibited drugs; she also discussed the role of these drugs in enhancing skill, strength, endurance, and recovery. According to Madam, the most common biological matrices for doping analysis are urine, whole blood serum, or plasma sample. She also emphasized the new biology markers used in recent studies, such as hair and dry matrix spots. Using research articles, Ma'am described the steps involved in anti-doping analysis, including screening and confirmation using a GC-MS instrument. She also emphasized the significance of athletes' biological passports, which contain unique hematological, steroidal, and endrocinological parameters. Finally, she discussed the difficulties of ant doping analysis. Finally, the session was opened for questions, and each and every question was positively taken up and appropriate answers were provided.


Expert lecture on Wildlife DNA Forensics
Date: 07 November 2022
The fifth expert lecture for the academic year 2022-2023 was organized by the Department of Forensic Science, Kristu Jayanti College, Autonomous on 7th November 2022 on the topic “Wildlife DNA forensics”. The session was conducted online over the ZOOM platform. Mr. Ulhas Gondhali, Lecturer (OP Jindal Global University, Delhi India), was the resource person. Sir is involved in teaching forensics and wildlife conservation courses as well as conducting research. The session began with a brief introduction to the speaker. Soon after, the session was taken over by the resource person. Sir explained the different types of wildlife crime: hunting, trading (for example, tiger skin), aiding and abetting wildlife crime, habitat destruction, and consumption. He went on to say that the potential applications of DNA include hunting, trading, and consumption. Sir elaborated that biological evidence in the form of skin, fur, hair, bone, blood, and meat, as well as horns and tusks obtained from the crime scene, is useful for DNA analysis. He discussed the DNA analysis of species origin, geographical location, and individual origin using Mitochondrial DNA, lineage markers, and micro STRs. He spoke about the infrastructure gaps in India. Finally, during the question-and-answer session, each question was positively received and appropriate answers were provided.


Expert Lecture on Artificial Intelligence in Forensic Science
Date: 21 October 2022
The fourth expert lecture for the academic year 2022-2023 was organized by the Department of Forensic Science, Kristu Jayanti College, Autonomous on 21st October 2022 on the topic “Artificial intelligence in Forensic Science”. The session was conducted online over the ZOOM platform. The resource person was Ms. Vinny Sharma, Assistant Professor in the Department of Forensic Science at Galgotias University, Noida. Ma’am has been designated as an Innovation Ambassador for IIC, an initiative of the Ministry of Education, Government of India and has two patents. The session began with a brief introduction to the speaker. The session was quickly taken over by the resource person. The presentation included topics such as Intelligence, cognitive Intelligence, multiple domain in AI, Introduction to AI, AI usage in various domain, sample size limitation, legal admissibility etc. Finally, a question and answer session was held, and each and every question was positively received and appropriate answers were provided.


Expert Lecture on Development of Latent Fingerprints using unconventional methods
Date: 15 October 2022
The third expert lecture for the academic year 2022-2023 was organized by the Department of Forensic Science, Kristu Jayanti College, Autonomous on 15th October 2022 on the topic “Development of latent prints using non-conventional methods”. The session was conducted online over the ZOOM platform

Dr. Richa Rohatgi, Assistant Professor at NICFS NFSU Delhi, served as the resource person. The session began with a brief introduction of the speaker to the audience. Soon after, the resource person took over the session. Madam provided a brief overview of the importance of fingerprints as evidence, the different types of prints found at crime scenes, and the characteristics of patent, latent, and plastic prints recovered at crime scenes on porous nonporous semi-porous surfaces. She went on to explain that the formation of latent prints is caused by organic and inorganic secretions from the hand, palm, and feet. Ma'am went on to explain the methods of developing latent prints in greater detail. Ma'am discussed how traditional methods include the use of physical powders such as magnetic powders, organic powders, luminescent powders, thermoplastic powders, SPR, and so on. Iodine fuming, cyanoacrylate fuming, Ninhydrin methods, DFO, silver nitrate, amido black, and other chemical methods of latent print development were also mentioned by Ma'am. She then discussed non-traditional methods for developing latent prints using common kitchen powders such as turmeric cocoa powder, henna powder vermilion, and cornstarch powder. Non-traditional methods include using a laser beam, poly ray, poly light, Omni print (1000), and a dust lighting kit. Madam also discussed recent advances in research in the development of latent prints using nanoparticles, human metabolites, spectroscopy Raman spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy, micro x-ray fluorescence, TOF-SIMS, Immunolabelling methods, and bacterial profiles.Finally, the session was opened for questions, and each question was positively received and appropriate answers were provided.


Expert Lecture on Forensic Epigenetics in Criminal Investigation
Date: 24 September 2022
The first expert lecture for the academic year 2022-2023 was organized by the Department of Forensic Science, Kristu Jayanti College, Autonomous on 24th September 2022 on the topic ‘Forensic epigenetics in criminal investigation”. The session was conducted online over the ZOOM platform

The resource person was Dr. Sonal Jain, DST Inspire Faculty, University of Delhi. She works on DNA Methylation and DNA Phenotyping. Her scientific interests span forensic genetics, evolutionary and population genetics, palaeogenomics, forensic zoology, and medical genetics.

The session started with a short inaugural session and the speaker was introduced to the audience. Soon after, the resource person too over the session. Madam, gave a brief introduction of the Forensic epigenetics and spoke in detail on current efforts to develop forensic epigenetic techniques are focused on four issues in criminal investigation i.e. Body fluid identification, individual age prediction, distinguishing monozygotic twins, and potentially stain age prediction.

Madam explained the concepts and procedures in a detailed and methodological manner.

In the end the session was opened for queries and the each and every question asked was taken up positively and appropriate answers were provided


Expert Lecture on Forensic Ballistics
Date: 17 September 2022
The first expert lecture for the academic year 2022-2023 was organised by the Department of Forensic Science, Kristu Jayanti College, Autonomous on 17th September 2022 on the topic ‘Forensic Ballistics’. The session was conducted online over the ZOOM platform The resource person was Dr. Manish Malhotra, Scientist B, Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Bhopal. Sir is from the physics division and specializes in forensic physics.

The session started with a short inaugural session and the speaker was introduced to the audience. Soon after, the resource person too over the session. Sir, gave a brief introduction of the field for forensic ballistics and went on to provide in depth knowledge of the field of forensic ballistics.

Sir had also shared his experiences in the field with the hands-on cases that he had encountered. From determining the shooter and the whether the same firearm was used to fire, sir had explained the concepts and procedures in a detailed and methodological manner.

In the end the session was opened for queries and the each and every question asked was taken up positively and appropriate answers were provided

Forensic Science in Ghana
Date: 09/09/2022
The first international lecture for the academic year 2022-2023 was organised by the Department of Forensic Science, Kristu Jayanti College, Autonomous on 9th September 2022 on the topic ‘Forensic Science in Ghana’.

The resource person was Mr. Alexander Badu Boateng. He is the senior police officer of Ghana police service. He is a BSc graduate in biological science and pursued his master’s in forensic science with a specialization in DNA typing, PCR technique and crime scene investigation. Currently he is doing his PhD in Biotechnology.

The session started with brief introduction about forensic science and moved on to various aspects like forensic science education, various universities providing the program, job opportunities, different forensic aspects. He spoke about the Forensic Science Laboratory in Ghana, different disciplines there and about the equipment used there. He also directed the attention of students to different cases happened and happening in Ghana and the role of forensic science in all of it.

During his talk he explained the use of forensic science in some high profile cases that he had handled as part of his police and forensic service in his country.

Finally, he also discussed about the various challenges faced there in the field of forensic science. Also during the question answer session the doubts of students were clearly answered by the guest. It was an informative and useful session.


Guest Lecture on ‘Role of Forensic Medicine in criminal investigation’
A guest lecture was organized to the VIth and IVth semester BSc Forensic Science students on the topic ‘Role of Forensic medicine in criminal investigation’. The resource person for the session was Dr Hareesh S Gouda, Professor and Head, Department of Forensic Medicine, Father Muller Medical College, Mangalore. Sir is an experienced and well-published person in the field of forensic medicine.

Forensic medicine is the application of medical science for purposes of justice. It is a specialised field which takes into account knowledge of pathology, thanatology, injury, age estimation etc. Forensic medicine is also part of the curriculum for forensic science graduates. This session opened the eyes of the students of practical examples of how the knowledge gained by learning forensic medicine can aid during practice in the field of forensic science. The resource person explained the basis of forensic medicine, its history and practise. The session emphasised the practical role that forensic medicine plays in criminal investigation. Sir shared many case examples to explain the different roles a forensic medicine personnel plays in criminal investigation. Students could learn the aspects well as the session made use of many case studies from real-world examples. Finally the resource person laid stress on how forensic medicine and forensic science are closely allied fields but yet different in many facets.

The resource person also took questions from the audience and answered patiently. The session was well received and students provided positive feedback.


Guest lecture on Practical approaches to Questioned Document examination
A guest lecture on the topic “Practical approaches to questioned document examination” was conducted on 19th February 2022 at 9.30 AM.

The resource person, Mr. Sharwan Kumar, is a case reporting officer in Central Forensic Science Laboratory, Chandigarh who handles the cases related to Questioned Documents and fingerprint examination. The resource person shared his knowledge in Examination of Questioned Documents and the practical approaches in this field. He also covered various topics related to questioned document examination including- • What is a document?

• Different types of forgery br> • Forged signature with case study and specimen.br> • Alterations, erasures/ abrasions in documents with case studies. br> • Different techniques used for examination of forged documents.br> • Examination of digital and typewritten documents.br> • The application of forensic linguist to solve the cases. br> During question & answer session, students raised their doubts related to the examination of documents.

The entire session was innovative and helped the students to learn more about the practical approaches in examination of questioned documents.


Guest Lecture on Careers in Forensic Science (Cyber Forensics and Cyber Security)
A guest lecture on the topic "Careers in Forensic Science (Cyber Forensics and Cyber Security)" was conducted on 5th February 2022, at 9 AM by the Unit of Forensic Science, Kristu Jayanti College. The resource person for the lecture was Mr. Kishalay Masanta, Cyber Security consultant, Quantum Security Services, Wellington, New Zealand. It was conducted over the zoom platform and had over 240 participants.

The resource person talked about the following to the audience-

Guest Lecture on Disaster Victim Identification.
Date: 13th May 2022
A guest lecture on the topic "Disaster Victim Identification" was conducted on 13th May 2022, at 3PM at M3 Auditorium, Main Block, Kristu Jayanti College, Bangalore. The resource person for the session was Dr. Deepak V, Asst Professor and forensic Consultant, Forensic Odontology, M R Ambedkar Dental College & Hospital Bengaluru.

Disaster victim identification is not a crime based scenario, but the techniques of forensic science are very much applied to this area. Anthropological analysis, DNA analysis and odontological analysis are among the many approaches toward Disaster Victim Identification.

Dr. Deepak listed the many avenues where forensic expertise is required for disaster victim identification. He explained the need for closure ot the relatives and how this field of humanitarian forensics is a deed-based field which requires commitment and fulfilment. He motivated the students using case studies of the recent past and expressed that they must work hard to achieve their dreams in the field and promised better scenarios to emerge in the future.

The session concluded with questions from the students and the resource person patiently and clearly explained the doubts.

Guest lecture on the topic "Careers in Forensic Science (Forensic Examiner in USA)"
A guest lecture on the topic "Careers in Forensic Science (Forensic Examiner in USA)" was conducted on 27th November 2021 by the Unit of Forensic Science.

The resource person is a forensic examiner working at the Rapid City Police Department in South Dakota, USA who started her lecture by explaining her role as a Forensic examiner in the Rapid Police Department at South Dakota , USA. Further, she went on to describe how her journey started in Forensic Science and built her career on the same in USA. She then highlighted the advantages and disadvantages of being a student in India and pursing higher studies in USA with specific relation to Forensic Science and her role. She elaborately explained the complete process of joining such programmes and how to apply for jobs and how to manage both the studies and jobs in a country like USA by giving examples of different individuals.

Guest Lecture on "Careers in Forensic Science - Forensic Journalism"
The Unit of Forensic Science, Department of Life Sciences at Kristu Jayanti College, Bangalore organized a guest lecture on "Careers in Forensic Science - Forensic Journalism" on 11th November, 2021. The session was conducted online and the participants were the students of BSc Forensic Science programme. The resource person Ms. Joulyn Kenny, Independent Forensic Consultant and HoD, UG Program at St. Paul's Institute of Communication Education, Mumbai delivered a lecture on the meaning, scope and significance of the field of Forensic Journalism. Ma'am used real-life case studies to highlight the need and processes of Forensic journalism. She also conveyed the prospect in the field and how it can be considered as a career opportunity for Forensic science graduates. Later the resource person also answered questions raised by the students and clarified them.

The session was overall well-received and understood by the participants and the students expressed that they were benefited greatly by the lecture.

International Expert lecture on Career Advancement in Forensic Science

An informative International Expert Lecture series was organized by unit of Forensic Science of Department of Life Sciences at Kristu Jayanti College through online platform on 28th of October 2020. Invitations were sent to second year students and first year students of Forensic Science by the Department. The expert lecture was conducted by the resource person, Mrs. Shraddha Nyati, Instructor, learntoupgrade, USA. The expert lecture was also graced by the presence of Dr. Elcey C. D, Head of the Department and other faculty members. The resource person highlighted the various career opportunities in the field of forensic science by giving examples of individuals who are working in those domains and the methods that they have taken to achieve those career options. The speaker encouraged the students to work hard and progress to a more specific area in forensic science that will help them build their careers in the field. The speaker also explained the fact that Forensic Science can be applied to almost any domain of working and the individual who has the knowledge of Forensic Science should be able to use this science in a versatile manner. The session was handled by Mr. Jeremiah Justus, Assistant professor, Kristu Jayanti College and the vote of thanks was delivered by Mr. Don Caeiro, Assistant professor, Kristu Jayanti College.


International Expert lecture Security Audit And Its Relation To Forensic Science

An informative career oriented expert lecture series was organized by unit of Forensic Science of Department of Life Sciences at Kristu Jayanti College through online platform on 19th of September 2020. Invitations were sent to second year students and first year students of unit of Forensic Science by the authorised individuals. The expert lecture was conducted by the resource person, Mr. Sai Krishna, Security Analyst, Intuit India Product Development Centre, Bangalore. The expert lecture was also graced by the presence of Dr. Elcey C. D, Head of the department and other faculty members. The speaker prepared an informative presentation on the topic security audits and its relation with respect to forensic science. In his speech, he urged the students to realize the importance of security and spoke about security suggestions. Almost 100 students participated and benefited. Mr. Krishna also spoke about security grading, which is introduced according to the degree of risk of intrusion and that the Grading system is classified into 4 levels. The students were able to understand different aspects of security with the respect to forensic field. Different questions were asked by the students as well. The expert lecture came to an end at 1:15 pm wherein the guest lecture answered all the queries of the students. He provided the audience with security audit reports and also the classification of security issues were identified and what those issues could result in.


Webinar on Forensic Odontology and its application
A webinar on “Forensic Odontology and its Application”, was organized by Unit of Forensic Science, Department of Life Sciences, Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru. It was conducted on 16th of June 2020. The target audience was undergraduate, postgraduate students, research scholars, faculties of many other institutions and organizations. The number of participants attended the webinar were 96 from many institutions. The resource person Was Dr. Akhil Shetty, Oral Pathologist and Forensic Odontologist. The session was arranged and hosted by Mr. Don Caeiro, Assistant Professor, Unit of Forensic Science, Department of Life Sciences, Kristu Jayanti College on the first day. The webinar was inaugurated by Vice Principal, Rev. Father Dr.Augustine George. the session was concluded and vote of thanks was delivered by Mr Don Caeiro. The webinar was mainly focused on the discipline of forensic odontology. The resource person gave a brief introduction and then went on to explain the application of forensic odontology in various aspects. Mr Akhil also threw light on certain procedures employed in the field that is of utmost importance to any forensic professional. He also spoke on the importance of the discipline, its limitations and the scope of forensic odontology. Along with this he also discussed a few case studies and gave a good amount of illustrations.


Expert Lecture | Forensic Psychology and Expert Witness Testimony
The Unit of Forensic Science under the Department of Life Sciences organized an expert lecture on ‘Forensic Psychology and Expert Witness Testimony’ on 9th January 2020, in Mini Auditorium I. The session was led by Mr. Sunny Joseph, a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Forensic Psychologist. The lecture was a part of the Expert Lecture Series, a departmental initiative to provide its students with an opportunity to hear from and interact with national and international experts in Life Sciences and allied fields

Dr. Sunny briefed the students on Forensic Science and expert witness testimony. He explained how an expert is summoned in the court and the qualifications that make a Forensic Scientist eligible to be considered an expert. He talked about the processes that happen in a court pertinent to the admissibility of evidence. He also talked about his live experiences with the field of Forensic Psychology. He talked about Forensic Clinical Psychology and responsibilities of an expert in the field. Various methods used for lie detection and ways to extract information from a possible suspect were also elaborated. He also briefed us on various psychological assessments used in the field of Forensic Science. A brief idea on how polygraph works and the equipments involved was also given. The students were happy to have received a comprehensive and live session on the topic. They observed that the session was enthusiastic and informative throughout.


International Expert lecture on Fingerprint at the Crime Scene

An International Expert lecture was organised by the unit of forensic science, Department of Life sciences on 9th December 2020. The resource person was Dr. Mike McCutcheon. The session started with a brief introduction by Mr. Don Caeiro, assistant professor of Forensic Science, followed by the presidential address by Dr Vijayanand S, Coordinator and assistant professor UG Department of Life Sciences. The session was then handed over to Dr Mike. Dr. Mike started by introducing the field of fingerprints. He then explained about the various methods of development. He further demonstrated the development of fingerprints on surfaces like glass, porcelain, textured surface, car door handles etc. He used different techniques of development and lifting while explaining the benefit of one technique over the other. He also explained the recent developments made in the field of fingerprint development and analysis.

Expert Lecture | Role and Diversity of Insects in Forensic Investigations

The Department of life sciences organised an expert lecture on “Role of Insects in Forensic Science” on 07th August 2019, in Mini auditorium I. The session was led by Dr. Shashikumar, Scientific officer, Department of Biology, Forensic Science Laboratory, Madiwala, Bangalore. The Lecture was a part of the expert lecture series, a departmental initiative to provide the students with an opportunity to hear from and interact with national and international experts in the field of life sciences and allied fields.The program began with an invocation hymn by the choir followed by a welcome speech by Ms. Lorraine, a student representative from B.Sc. Forensic Science. Ms. Diya John from BSc Forensic Science hosted the program.

Dr. Shashikumar, dealt with the basics of Forensic Science and briefed about the different Departments under the Forensic Science laboratory at Madiwala. He spoke about the contributions of various scientists towards the field of forensics and also about the history of forensic science laboratories in India. He stressed upon the systematic methods involved in the collection of evidence, which are to be followed by a Forensic Scientist.

Dr. Shashikumar also spoke about the importance and role of insects in the field of Forensic Science and investigation. The students were enthusiastic as this was a distinctive topic. He explained how the presence of different kind of insects at the scene of crime and related evidences has helped in solving cases. A documentary video on the State Forensic Science laboratory was also displayed. The lecture came to a conclusion with the vote of thanks delivered by Jiby Joy, student representative from BSc Forensic Science.

The Department of Life Sciences organised a guest lecture on ‘Forensic Science in Fraud Investigations’ on 24th July 2019 in Mini Auditorium II. The session was led by Ms. Uma Biju Samuel, a certified fraud examiner, and a freelance forensic scientist. It was the fourth lecture of this academic year organised as part of the Expert Lecture Series, a departmental initiative to offer its students with an opportunity to hear from and interact with national and international experts in Life Sciences and allied fields. The program began with an invocation hymn by the choir, followed by a welcome speech by Ms. Gayathri L Nair, a student representative from BSc. Forensic Science. Ms. Faiza, from BSc Forensic Science hosted the program.

Ms. Samuel dealt with the various aspects of fraudulent practices in the corporate world and the application of forensic investigations to expose such practices. She elaborated on the consequences of these practices on the global economy and the role played by forensic scientists in uncovering them and keeping a check on them. Timely references to research and case studies pertinent to such investigations helped the students to better understand the topic of discussion. The lecture came to a closure with the vote of thanks delivered by Jocelyn, student representative from BSc. Forensic Science. More than 40 students of the BSc. Forensic Science who participated in the lecture received it with scholarly passion and enthusiasm.


Expert Lecture | Role of Forensic Experts In Crime Investigation

The Department of Life Sciences organized a guest lecture on ‘Role of Forensic Experts in Crime Investigation’ on 17th July 2019, in Mini Auditorium II. The session was led by Mr. Hemanth Kumar V, Visiting Faculty, Jain University, Bengaluru. The lecture was a part of the Expert Lecture Series, a departmental initiative to provide its students with an opportunity to hear from and interact with national and international experts in Life Sciences and allied fields. Forensic science deals with the application of Science to legal issues, especially the use of scientific technology to support the system of delivering justice. In India Forensic Science received a facelift as a prospective technology with the recent passing of the DNA Technology (Use and Application) Regulation Bill, 2018 by the Lok Sabha.

The session started with an invocation hymn. Ms. Ann Mariya, student representative from BSc Forensic Science welcomed the gathering and introduced the speaker. Mr. Hemanth, who holds a Master’s degree in criminology, has worked with different law enforcing departments including the Delhi Police Department. He shared his experiences of working as a criminologist with the students and outlined the role of a forensic expert in resolving crime investigations. He asserted that the job of a criminologist is not confined to the walls of the laboratory but involves the outreach and interactions with witnesses, suspects and criminals. The students received the lecture with enthusiasm as it gave a broader understanding of the actual responsibilities of a forensics expert and the different specializations within the field. The description of few cases he dealt with as an expert was received with excitement and helped to convey the inquisitiveness expected out of a forensics expert. The talk inspired students to consider Forensic Science as a career choice and laid the foundations for working towards that. The session was concluded with a vote of thanks by Ms. Jocelyn, student representative from BSc Forensic Science.

Lakkapan, Assistant Director, Forensic Science Laboratory, Madivala, Bengaluru. The lecture was a part of the Expert Lecture Series, a departmental initiative to provide its students with an opportunity to hear from and interact with national and international experts in Life Sciences and allied fields. Forensic science deals with the application of Science to legal issues, especially the use of scientific technology to support the system of delivering justice. The lecture aimed at introducing the basic principles of Forensic Science as used in crime investigations benefitted around 200 students from the undergraduate and postgraduate programs of the Department of Life Sciences. The session started with an invocation hymn. Dr. Sivagama Sundari, Faculty Member, Department of Life Sciences welcomed the gathering and introduced the speaker. Dr. Vinod, a practicing expert in the field introduced the basic concepts of Forensic Science and detailed the process of evidence generation through the use of DNA samples. He explained the process of isolation of DNA from crime scene samples, amplification of DNA by PCR, generation of DNA fingerprints using Short Tandem Repeat (STR) and Restriction Fragment Length polymorphism (RFLP) and the blotting techniques to detect DNA signatures. The lecture was passionately received by the students and witnessed productive interactions between the students and the speaker. The session came to a closure with the vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Rakesh Reddy, student representative from V semester BSc MBG.
