CMI Legacy and Educational Philosophy

St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara
St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara (1805 -1871), the founder of Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), the first indigenous religious order for men in India, is the beacon of our educational philosophy.

God’s divine call led him on the path of sanctity as he started his spiritual journey at the young age of thirteen. As an ordained priest in the church he went on the start the religious order for men – Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI). He later founded the indigenous religious order form women – Congregation of Mother of Carmel (CMC). His compassion for all, led him to introduce various social reform measures to emancipate the downtrodden. His endeavor to elevate the economic status of the poor through education by opening schools for all children irrespective of gender, caste or creed, mid-day meals scheme, and support of families saw the dawn of prosperity in South India. Education was the pivotal pillar of progress for this saint. Healthcare for the sick was given prominence by the congregation. The agrarian masses saw the silver lining in their horizon due to the tireless effort of this saint. His mission was the welfare of every individual in the society. His life and work led to the holistic transformation of the society.

The CMI Congregation has been carrying out the legacy of the founder to the ends of the earth through their mission of social welfare, healing, education, etc.
