Since its first days in 1962, Trinity Western has held a unique vision for Christian liberal arts and sciences education in Canada. The first president Dr. Calvin B. Hanson (1962-1974) helped shape the early vision. Two decades later, with 800 students enrolled, the college achieved two important milestones. In 1984, under the leadership of TWU’s second president, Dr. R. Neil Snider (1974-2006), Trinity Western was granted full membership in the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), and in 1985, the British Columbia legislature renamed the Trinity Western College Act the Trinity Western University Act, establishing TWU as a university.
The next milestones for the University included incorporating ACTS Seminaries and the School of Graduate studies, which offer masters and doctoral programs in theological studies, counselling psychology, and humanities.
TWU leads the way in Canada for Christian liberal arts education, and offers 42 undergraduate and 17 graduate degree programs. TWU has earned national recognition in educational surveys for its overall quality of education reported in The Globe and Mail University Report and Maclean’s magazine. TWU has four Canada Research Chairs: in Developmental Genetics and Disease; Interpretation, Religion, and Culture; Dead Sea Scrolls Studies; and in Patient-Reported Outcomes.
Trinity Western University provides a wide array of learning experiences, whether degree or non-degree, in its satellite campuses and through its various schools and institutes.

MA Lead is the most popular Masters program at TWU. It is offered in a number of formats.
Format 1. The traditional format is one month of 2 intensive courses in July or January followed by stream related courses delivered online throughout the year. Another round of intensive courses on the TWU Campus in Langley followed by another year of online courses concluding with the completion of a major project. Graduation is in 2 years and 3 months. Price is about $25,000CDN for program
Format 2. The MA Lead can also be completed in each stream in an entirely online format for students who cannot come to the TWU Campus. Students in India could complete this program from their locations in India. Price is about $25,000CDN
Format 3. MA Lead can be completed in a mixed format as students can choose to complete most courses online and also take one or two on campus courses at their discretion. In this format we are allowing students to move in and out of the online and on campus experiences. Cost is about $25,000CDN.
Format 4. The Business Stream only can be completed in a full time residential format at TWU Richmond. In this format, mainly international students complete the MA Lead – Business Stream in 12 months by taking intensive courses every day and having a practicum opportunity with local businesses in the Richmond community. The program is about $27,000CDN. Most students will complete the Project Management Certification program after the MA Lead program to increase their employability in the local market and to extend their study period to 17 months which is sufficient to apply for a 3 year work permit in Canada. Additional cost for the PMP is $8,000.
This format of the MA Lead (Business Stream) is the most popular format for International Learners as they receive a Master’s Degree plus Project Management Certification and can find work in Canada in order to begin the process of transitioning to Canada for their lives.
Format 5. The Business Stream only can be completed in a fully online format entirely in Mandarin. In this way we have many Chinese Business leaders completing the MA Lead –Business Stream in a two year cohort based model. Price is about $26,000 CDN. This is not really applicable to the Indian Context as it is delivered in the Mandarin Language.
Master of Counselling Psychology
The MA Counselling Psychology is a program that requires 4 years of undergraduate study in Psychology or a related discipline and specific courses (i.e., Brain and Behaviour taught be a PhD in neuroscience, Statistics, Research Methods, Cognition, Theories of Personality, etc.). MA in Counselling Psychology is usually full as a program with a waiting list. Over the past 2 years we have added an international enrollment stream in the program (only 5 students per year) for students who come from Sun Yat Sen University in Guangzhou China or Southern Medical University in Guangzhou. These students can complete their counselling residency at TWU Richmond. The price for the MA Counselling Psychology program is about $35,000CDN. Most graduates go directly into practice as registered counsellors or move on to PhD or PsyD work at other institutions.
MA in Marriage and Family Therapy
The MAMFT program also requires 4 years of undergraduate study in Psychology or a related discipline but it is less restrictive than the MA in Counselling Psychology. It is not a thesis track program and is designed to prepare graduates to be professional MFT counsellors. It is accredited by the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT). The program is offered through our ACTS Seminaries. Most graduates go on to work as therapists in non-profit organizations. Some graduates go on to complete PsyD and PhD programs at other institutions. Cost is about $30,000 CDN
MA in Biblical Studies
The MA in Biblical Studies is a heavy research program that is designed for top scholars to go on to complete PhD’s at some of the world’s leading Universities. It is quite restrictive and only has about 5 students per year.
MA in TESOL
The MA in TESOL program prepared students to teach English as a Second Language around the world. The program has two formats. An Online Format and a On Campus format. Both formats are very intense learning formats. Price for the program is about $25,000CDN
MA in Interdisciplinary Humanities
This MA program is designed for graduates of 4 year undergrad programs in the Humanities (History, English, Political Science, Religious Studies, etc.). Price for the program is around $25,000 CDN.
MSc in Nursing
MEd. In Leadership and in Special Education
TWU only offers one Doctoral Program and it is a Doctor of Ministry program offered through our ACTS Seminary division. It is not really a University type Doctoral Program. We expect to have doctoral program in the next 3-5 years, but we have to go through a separate government approval process to seek approval for Doctoral Programs.
Admissions to Graduate programs is on a competitive basis. This means that the minimum admissions standard is often not sufficient to receive an admissions letter into the program. Each program is a little different in this regard. Whereas some programs have limited enrollment, other programs have a more open enrollment system.
Minimum Admissions Standards:
3.0 GPA across a 4 year Undergraduate Program delivered in English
3 letters of reference (at least 2 must be academic in nature)
Some programs require work experience (some may allow volunteer experience to substitute for work experience)
7.0 – 7.5 IELTS or equivalent depending on the program
Visa processes:
International Students must apply to the program for admission and be accepted into the program by the Program Director.
Students will then receive a letter of acceptance and a request to pay a $9,900CDN deposit to be held by TWU and applied to their program fees. This deposit is non-refundable unless the applicant is not able to secure a visa. The reason this amount is so high is that the Canadian visa office wants to see evidence of the student’s commitment to study at TWU in Canada. TWU and CIC have set up processes to ensure that students do not use a TWU Admissions letter as a way to enter Canada for other reasons. This is especially a problem in the Indian context as there are a number of cases where students have come to Canadian Universities and then left to get married or other things outside the University.
Once TWU has received the deposit from the applicant, we issue a letter of Admission into the program. This letter can be used to apply for a Canadian visa. Again, all visa decisions are at the discretion of the Customs and Immigration Canada (CIC). Students have to show evidence of program admission as well as financial capacity to complete the program in Canada.
Note. If we develop a specific pathway for students to come from Kristu Jayanthi to TWU, we can meet with the local CIC office in Bangalore and alert them to the program pathway. They will then be better informed about the visa applications coming through from your students to TWU.
We are working on a new concept that I think we shared with you when you were here in Canada. In this model, we would set up microcampuses (we are calling them FAR Centers) at Universities around the world in order to:
a. Increase the seamless flow of students between Universities
b. Decrease the cost of students to complete a TWU Degree Program
c. Increase our international collaborations with partner institutions
d. Increase the sharing of knowledge and information around the world to increase the capacity of graduates to function as global citizens
e. Increase revenue both to TWU and to partner institutions around the world.
Over the next year, I have been entrusted to identify the first 2 or 3 institutions that we would work with to establish such a center. I believe that the center model is the best way to increase student mobility and develop the best preparation for students for international study. Please let me know the level of interest from Kristu Jatanthi in this model so that we can continue to work collaboratively in this direction.
