“Vidwat Sangosthi- Series 2”, an expert talk on policy making processes

The Department of Political Science in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Public Administration, Karnataka Regional Branch organized “Vidwat Sangosthi- Series 2”, an expert talk on policy making processes. The insightful talk was delivered by Mr. S.V. Ranganath, a retired IAS Officer and former Chief Secretary of the Government of Karnataka. The session was chaired by Dr. D Jeevan Kumar, former professor, Bangalore University and Chairman, Citizens Voluntary Initiatives for the City (CIVIC), Bangalore and organized under the leadership of Dr. Kaveri Swami, Head, Department of Social Sciences and Languages, Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru.

The talk addressed the components of public policy and the interconnectedness of government arms, focusing on India's challenges. Key themes included the Rashomon Effect, which highlights multiple interpretations of events impacting policy, and the dilemma of government intervention in market failures. Drawing from Public Choice Theory and Elinor Ostrom’ss work on common resource management, the speaker emphasized empowering local communities for better resource governance. He discussed the need for guidelines for policymakers, the effects of corruption, and the importance of ‘Systems Thinking’ and technology in policymaking. Ultimately, the talk advocated for a people-centric approach, prioritizing the impacts of policies on vulnerable populations and calling for reforms to enhance equity and state capacity.


Expert Talk’ on Role of Youth in Nation Building

The Department of Political Science organized an ‘Expert Talk’ on Role of Youth in Nation Building in which our Expert, Retired IAS V. Balasubramanian addressed the students with facts, data, statistics and other relevant information which showcased the problems in India. The students understood the picture of what is shown to people at large and the real genuine core issues of India. The wide gap between the rich and poor and how government policy too certain level are good but not implemented well. The guest speaker presented slides on statistics showing the underdevelopment in India, the wide gap between the rich and poor, and Government’s infrastructural project. In a way the resource person presented the areas where the youth awareness and role is important. The event brought together the agendas and spheres which are to be addressed by the nation. It was a thought-provoking and inspirational experience, in line with the college's goal of fostering holistic development and intellectual curiosity.

Expert talk on Sustainable Development

The Department of Political Science hosted an enlightening Expert Talk featuring Dr. Mohan Kumar R, Department of PG Commerce, Kristu Jayanti College, on 21st November 2023.

The session explored the topic of “Sustainable Development,” discussing key concepts like Development and Development Issues, Sustainable Development Goals, Human Development Indicators, Social Audit, and Globalization.

Dr. Mohan Kumar R’s expertise added depth to the conversation, making the complexities of sustainable development more accessible and insightful.


Expert talk on “Forced Migration and Refugee Crisis”

The Department of Political Science hosted an expert talk on “Forced Migration and Refugee Crisis” featuring Dr. Tejal Khanna, Assistant Professor, Department of Political Science, GITAM University, Bangalore. This insightful lecture covered a wide array of topics, from the intricacies of forced and voluntary migration to the crucial role of International Refugee Law, with a focus on the 1951 UN Convention on Refugees and the Principle of Non-Refoulement. Dr. Khanna’s extensive expertise and engaging discourse shed light on contemporary issues such as the Libya/EU refugee situation, the UK-Rwanda refugee agreement, and the ongoing Rohingya crisis, all underlining the pressing need for durable solutions in the realm of forced migration.


Mock Parliament
Date: 12 September 2023
The Department of Political Science organized a Mock Parliament on 12 September 2023, in A1 Auditorium, Admin Block, Kristu Jayanti Autonomous College. The program provided participants with a deep and practical insight into the intricate workings of the Indian Parliament.

The heart of the Mock Parliament lay in the active involvement of Second and Third-year BA Students, who assumed roles mirroring those of the Indian Parliament, including the Speaker, Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers, and Opposition Members. The students were vigorously trained by Ms. Anjali Bajaj, faculty, Department of Political Science. This immersive approach allowed students to practically apply their theoretical knowledge, fostering a more profound understanding of the Indian Parliamentary Practices.

Additionally, the Mock Parliament event provided a sense of civic engagement and social responsibility among the students. It encouraged them to actively participate in the democratic process, raising their awareness of the issues facing our nation and the role they can play in shaping its future. Such engagement is essential for developing informed and responsible citizens


Special Lecture on Agendas and Perspectives of Globalisation

Department of Studies in Political Science, University of Mysore with the collaboration of Department of Political Science, Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous) organized a Special Lecture on Agendas and Perspectives of Globalization on 01/03/2023. Prof. Muzafar H Assadi, Honorable Vice Chancellor, University of Mysore was the speaker of the session. Sir threw light on the opportunities and challenges of Globalisation in the modern era. How Globalisation helps to eradicate social problems and to develop the personality of an individual with the developments of the state. He made comparisons between the activities of Globalisation in developing and developed countries. The lecture ended with a Q & A session.


Special Lecture on Public Personnel Systems in India and USA: Comparative Assessment

Department of Political Science of Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), Bengaluru in association with the Indian Institute of Public Administration, Karnataka Regional Branch, organized a special lecture titled, ‘Public Personnel Systems in India and USA: Comparative Assessment’, on 12 January 2023.

Dr. Krishna K. Tummala, Professor Emeritus Kansas State University. Manhattan, USA, and Shri. T.M. Vijay Bhaskar, IAS (Retd.) The former Chief Secretary, of the Government of Karnataka, Chairman, of Karnataka Administrative Reforms Committee-II, and Vice-Chairman, of IIPA – Karnataka Regional Branch were the speaker and chair respectively. Prof Dr. Krishna K. Tummala threw light on public administration in the session as he drew comparisons between the Public Service of India and America. He explained position classification in civil service, the responsibilities of civil servants in the administrative developments of the two superpower countries, and that powers were distributed according to the political power and the domain rule and ideology.

Guest Talk on Constitutional Day “India - The Mother of Democracy: Major Challenges”

The Department of Political science organised a guest talk on India – The mother of Democracy: Major Challenges on 25th November 2022. On this occasion department had invited Dr. S.Y. Surendra Kumar, Professor, Department of Political Science, Bangalore University as a Resource Person. This enriching session was attended by faculties and students of political science department in huge numbers. An elaborated talk on the topic Democratic values and its relevance delivered by the chief guest which intended to cherish the glory and reaffirm of our commitment to uphold the ideology of Democratic Principles.


International Conference “Contours Of Political Developments In South Asia Region: Changing Security Priorities And Perspectives”

The International Conference on Contours of Political Developments in South Asian Region: Changing Security Priorities and Perspectives held on 12th and 13th October 2022 is the latest milestone in a series of conferences organised by the Department of Political Science, Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous). The sub themes of this conference are Geo-Strategic significance of South Asia in International Politics, Recent Political Trends in SAARC Countries, Changing Security Scenario and Priorities in South Asia and War and Peace: Role of Youth and Women. The conference invited internationally eminent academicians, scholars and researchers on a shared platform to identify and arrive at possible solutions with a focus on research and effective policy for the overall development of South Asia as a region. Each session intended to explore new dimensions and patterns of the issue through varied research and academic experiences.


Guest Lecture on “Constitutional Values And Public Policy”

Department of political science organised a guest talk on Constitutional Values and Public Policy on 24th August 2022. On this occasion, the department invited Prof Mohan Rao Bolla, Principal, of Kristu Jayanti College of Law as the Resource Person. This enriching session was attended by faculties and students of the political science department in huge numbers.

An elaborated talk on the topic of constitutional values and public policy was delivered by the chief guest which intended to cherish the glory and reaffirm our commitment to upholding the ideology of the great Indian constitution. He emphasized the importance of constitutional values and commemorated the people who contributed to the development of the Indian Constitution. He highlighted the basic differences between the Indian constitution with the constitutions of other countries. The role of the Preamble and the Directive principles of state policy in the life of individuals as well as the Unity and integrity of the nation were stressed in his speech.

The Department of Political Science organized a Guest Lecture on “Constitutional Principles” to commemorate Constitution Day on 26th Nov. 2021 between 9 am to 10 am through virtual mode. The program was anchored by Mr. Sanjay Jayakumar, Student Coordinator of 3rd year HEP, followed by a welcome speech by Ms. Alice D Malakar, 3rd year JPsEng. After this, a brief profile of the resource person was read out by Ms. Dorcas Engmawii, Student Coordinator of 3rd year JPsEng. After the introduction of the guest, the speaker of the day Dr. Mohan Rao Bolla gave insights of the Constituent Assembly, he also spoke about Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties, Directive Principles of States Policy and Rule of Law. He requested all the participants to recite the Preamble along with him. After this there was an interactive session where participants raised number of questions and the resource person answered all the questions. The program came to an end with the vote of thanks which was given by Joseph Thomas of 3rd EPS student.


Guest Lecture on Unity For Social Change

The Department of Political Science organized a Guest Lecture on “Unity for Social Change” on 27th October 2021 between 10.30 to 11.30 am to commemorate Ekta Diwas. The program was organized through virtual mode. Dr. Poornima P S, Asst. Professor, Department of Social Work, Kristu Jayanti College was the resource person.

Dr. Poornima spoke about the importance of unity, social change and the various changes that has taken place and how they have molded the society. She made the session very interactive, interesting and informative.

The program was anchored by Mr. Alan Joseph Benny, followed by a welcome speech from Mr. Sanjay Jayakumar, Student Coordinator. After this, a brief profile of the resource person was read out by Chayanika Sarma and the event was concluded with a vote of thanks which was delivered by Ms. Dorcas Engmawii, Student Coordinator. The program was completely monitored and guided by Prof. S J Michael, the Head of the Department and Coordinator for the Department of Social Sciences and Languages, and Faculty Coordinator Dr. Kaveri Swami.


Guest Lecture on Constitutional Principles

Objective:
1. To celebrate Constitution Day and bring awareness about the importance of the Constitution.
2. To connect the present youths with their roots.
3. To make them understand the worth of the Constitution.

The Department of Political Science organized a Guest Lecture on “Constitutional Principles” to commemorate Constitution Day on 26th Nov. 2021 between 9 am to 10 am through virtual mode. Mr Sanjay Jayakumar anchored the program, Student Coordinator of 3rd-year HEP, followed by a welcome speech by Ms Alice D Malakar, 3rd-year JPsEng. Guest Lecture on awareness about violence against women
Department of Political Science has organised Guest Lecture on 25th November 2020 through online mode. Dr. Winnie Joyce A, Asst. Prof. Department of Social Work, Kristu Jayanti College was the guest speaker of the day. She delivered a guest lecture on the topic-Prevention of Emotional Violence against Women: A Psychosocial Approach. The resource person gave an insight of the emotions of an individual. Resource person also spoke about how to treat Negative Emotions. Everybody has a right to exhibit their emotion through anger, love, affection, tears etc. It should not be considered as a sole domain of women. The resource person conducted poll in the course of session.

Nearly 140 students participated in the event.


International Day for Elimination of Violence against Women
Objectives:
1. To bring an awareness about the violence against women.
2. To strengthen the emotions of an individual.

The Department of Political Science organised a Guest Lecture on 25th November 2020 through online mode between 2.15 and 3.15 PM The Guest Lecture began with a silent prayer. Sanjay of Class III Sem HEP was the MC for the program, the welcome speech was given by Deepthi the student coordinator and the introduction of the guest was done by Dr. Kaveri Swami, Faculty Coordinator, Department of Political Science. Dr. Winnie Joyce A, Asst. Prof. Department of Social Work, Kristu Jayanti College was the guest of the day. EXPERT TALK ON “INDIA’S DEFENCE POLICY”

Objective: To make the students aware of India’s Defence Policy from cold war to post cold war.

The Expert Talk was organized by the Political Science Club with the intention to imbibe the knowledge about the India’s Defence Policy from cold war to post cold war. The Guest of the day explained in a very systematic way about India’s Defence Policy starting from British period to the present day. She mentioned that the India is not a cake walk for the world due to her Defence Policy. She stressed that Defence Policy should be made compulsory to the Students at the Graduation level. Finally she concluded by saying that Soldiers are not born to die so let’s make our Defence strong.


Relevance of Social Sciences in Modern times

Objective: To make the students aware of the relevance of social sciences in modern times.

The Guest lecture was organized by the Political Science Club with the intention to imbibe the knowledge about the Social Sciences in Modern Times. The Guest of the day explained in a very systematic way about its importance of social science in the world. He mentioned that the study deals with all aspects of human life, for understanding present and past for achieving progress in the society. He explained the scope of humanities in the world wide. He stressed that Indian Education should adopt an integrated learning and concluded by saying that a holistic approach to the study of humanities and social sciences is the need of an hour.

Guest Lecture on Women Rights in India

Resource Person: Ms. Mary Princess Lavanya, Co-ordinator, PG, MSW, ST. Joseph College
A Guest lecture on ‘Women rights in India’ was conducted on 15.09.17, Friday in Kristu Jayanti College, by the department of political science at Room NO 602 at 11:00 AM. Ms. Mary Princess Lavanya. Madam started the session with a general overview of rights given by the state to the citizens with special reference to women’s rights. The resource person spoke about the survival of the fittest and the concept of fundamental rights which stresses on equality. Resource person stressed on the burning issues of violation of women rights, human trafficking etc. Later few case studies were discussed to analyse the thinking capacity of the students. On the whole the discussion was fruitful for the students.

Guest lecture- Dr.NATRAJ HULIAR, Director of Gandhian studies.
“It is very rare to see anyone from the current generation showing interest in Gandhiji” said Prof.Natraj Huliar, Director of Gandhian studies in his introductory speech. It was followed by an informative documentary “RECOLLECTIONS OF SATYAGRAHI” shown to the students. Later selected students were called to talk on features of Gandhism, relevance of Gandhi.

The college and its offices will remain closed from 23rd to 25th December 2024 due to end-semester vacation. |
