Electoral Literacy Club

In an effort to encourage student engagement and awareness of elections, Kristu Jayanti College launched the Electoral Literacy Club (ELC) in 2024. Through a variety of events aimed at educating students about their rights and responsibilities as voters, this organization provides a forum for student engagement. A range of interesting events are planned by the ELC, including declamation contests, quizzes, poster-making contests, workshops, especially Voter Registration Campaign, Electors Verification Programme (EVP) and Community Engagement Programmes. These programs are designed to make electoral rights, education, engaging and participatory. The club is run by faculty members who supervise its operations, and any student at Kristu Jayanti College is welcome to join. Involvement in the community and a sense of civic duty are fostered by this inclusivity. By means of its programs, the Electoral Literacy Club hopes to strengthen India's democratic fabric by equipping students with the information and abilities needed to cast rational ballots.

Vision
The ELC's vision is to ensure that young people and future voters are informed and engaged citizens by fostering a culture of electoral involvement.

Mission
The mission includes a number of important goals:

Encourage Awareness: The group wants to educate students, teachers, and the civil society about the right to vote.

Electoral Process Education: Its main goal is to inform upcoming voters about important election-related topics, such as voter registration, the usage of electronic voting machines (EVMs), and voter-verified paper audit trails (VVPAT).

Promote Critical Thinking: Students are encouraged to participate in critical conversations regarding democratic values, electoral rights, and associated procedures by the ELC.

Encourage Voting Ethics: The group encourages voting ethics based on the tenets of "Every Vote Counts" and "No Voter to be Left Behind."

Guest talk on Germany’s Federal Election; Impact on Europe and the World
Date: 28 February 2025
The Department of History and Electoral Literacy Club (ELC) of Kristu Jayanti College, in collaboration with the Science, Technology, and International Relations Programme of the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bengaluru, successfully organized the NIAS-KJC Europe Lecture Series #28. On "Germany’s Federal Election: Impact on Europe and the World," was conducted on 28th February 2025, from 07:30 PM to 09:00 PM via Zoom. The distinguished resource person for the lecture was Dr. Tim Stuchtey, Executive Director of the Brandenburg Institute for Society and Security (BIGS), Potsdam, Germany.

The lecture provided a deep understanding of Germany’s federal election system and its impact on European and global politics. Dr. Stuchtey explained the electoral process in Germany, shedding light on how political shifts within the country influence European Union policies, economic trends, and global security. The event saw enthusiastic participation from faculty members, researchers, and students, who engaged in an insightful discussion on Germany’s role in shaping international affairs. A key takeaway from the session was how Germany’s elections affect trade policies, governance structures, and diplomatic relations across the world. The lecture concluded with an interactive Q & A session, where participants explored the broader implications of electoral outcomes on democracy and global stability.


Documentary Screening: "India Votes - The World’s Largest Election"
Date: 19 February 2025
The Electoral Literacy Club of Kristu Jayanti College organized a documentary screening of "India Votes: The World’s Largest Election" on 19th February 2025. It aims to provide students with insights into the extensive efforts behind conducting the 2024 General Elections in India. The event aimed to foster awareness about the electoral process and highlight the importance of voting in a democracy. The documentary, produced by National Geographic, took the audience on a journey through the complexities of organizing elections in the world's largest democracy. It showcased the step-by-step execution of the election process. The screening was well received by the students, who found the documentary highly engaging and informative. A feedback session was conducted post-screening, where students shared their insights and takeaways. A Google Form was circulated to collect feedback on the event. The responses reflected that the documentary significantly enhanced their understanding of elections and inspired them to be more responsible voters.


Voter Registration Campaign
Date: 11 February 2025
The Electoral Literacy Club (ELC) of Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), organised a significant event that is Voter Registration Campaign on 11th February 2025 in the Main Block. The initiative aimed to promote electoral awareness and ensure maximum participation in the democratic process. It is an opportunity and platform created for students to avail their Election Photo Identity Card (EPIC) for the coming elections at the various levels. The campaign aimed to promote voter awareness and to help students complete their voter registration process easily and efficiently. The ELC team actively facilitated the registration process for the students, ensuring that all necessary steps were completed with ease. As a result, 48 students successfully registered their name to avail vote Id’s through the campaign. This initiative was a significant contribution towards encouraging young citizens to participate in the democratic process. The ELC plans to continue such efforts to foster civic responsibility among students.


National Voters Day Competitions 2025
Date: 20 January 2025
The Electoral Literacy Club of Kristu Jayanti College successfully organized three engaging competitions on the occasion of National Voters Day, January 20, 2025. These events were designed to foster awareness and active participation in democratic processes among undergraduate students. The competitions included Drawing & Poster Making, Collage Making, and Essay Writing. The event witnessed active participation from a total of 48 enthusiastic students across all competitions. ELC volunteers played a pivotal role in organizing the events seamlessly. A dedicated team of 10 volunteers ensured smooth execution. Participants demonstrated creativity, analytical thinking, and passion for the themes, making the competitions meaningful and impactful.


Voter Awareness Rally
Date: 11 January 2025
The Electoral Literacy Club (ELC) of Kristu Jayanti College, in collaboration with the Centre for Social Activities (CSA), successfully conducted Voter Awareness Rally in Shivagange Village, Adima Cultural Centre, Kolar on 11th January 2025. The rally aimed to educate the local community about the importance of voter registration and participation in the democratic process. The program commenced at the Adima Cultural Centre, where volunteers from both ELC and CSA gathered. Carrying placards with impactful voter awareness slogans, the rally progressed through Teerhalli and Shivagange village. The volunteers actively engaged with the community, passing by key locations, including the village school.

During the rally, the team informed villagers about the ongoing voter registration process for new voters and how to update or make necessary changes to voter ID cards. This initiative effectively raised awareness among the village community, highlighting the significance of voting and their role in strengthening Democracy. The event was well-received, with enthusiastic participation and interest from the villagers. The collaboration between ELC and CSA proved to be a successful effort in promoting electoral literacy and encouraging greater civic participation.


Voter Registration Campaign
Date: 11 January 2025
The Electoral Literacy Club (ELC) of Kristu Jayanti College, in collaboration with the Centre for Social Activities (CSA), successfully conducted a voter registration campaign in Shivagange Village, Adima Cultural Centre, Kolar on 11th January 2025. This initiative was aimed at promoting electoral awareness and facilitating voter registration among the residents of the village. The campaign was conducted from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. The volunteers successfully registered several new voters and updated corrections in their EPIC cards. The door-to-door interaction helped to spread awareness about the importance of voter registration and the electoral process. This initiative not only empowered citizens by ensuring their participation in the democratic process but also showcased the dedication and efforts of the ELC and CSA in fostering electoral literacy and inclusivity. The event was a significant step towards strengthening democratic participation at the grassroots level.


Wall of Democracy 2024
Date: 07 November 2024
The Electoral Literacy Club organised an event of Wall of Democracy 2024 on 7th November 2024. It was a creative and impactful initiative that encouraged students to voice their thoughts on the power and importance of voting. A blank board with the theme “My vote is my right” was set up at the entrance of the Main Block, inviting students, faculty, and staff to express their opinions, share ideas, and reflect on the significance of their voting rights. Throughout the day, the Wall of Democracy became filled with a range of perspectives and personal sentiments on voting. Many students shared inspiring messages, discussed what voting meant to them, and contributed to a collective display of democratic expression. The board served as a powerful reminder of the individual’s role in the democratic process and demonstrated a strong sense of civic responsibility within our college community. The Wall of Democracy successfully fostered a shared commitment to voting rights and served as a visual representation of student engagement in upholding democracy. The event received positive feedback for its inclusive and interactive approach, making it a memorable part of ELC’s efforts in promoting electoral awareness.


Electors Verification Programme (EVP)
Date: 07 November 2024
The Electoral Literacy Club successfully organized Electors Verification Programme on 7th November 2024, It aimed at ensuring that all students’ voter records were accurate and up-to-date. The event, held at the Humanities Block entrance, witnessed a strong turnout from students who came to verify their voter ID details. Throughout the day, students participated in checking the accuracy of their voter information and making necessary corrections to their voter IDs. ELC volunteers were stationed to assist students in navigating the process and provide information about the importance of maintaining updated voter records. The programme highlighted the role of accurate voter registration in promoting an inclusive and transparent electoral process. By the end of the day, we had a significant number of 41 students successfully verify their details, emphasizing the commitment of the student body towards responsible citizenship.

The Electoral Literacy Club (ELC) of Kristu Jayanti College (Autonomous), organised a significant event that is Voter Registration Campaign on 24th October 2024 in the Humanities Block. It is an opportunity and platform created for students to avail their Election Photo Identity Card for the coming elections at the various levels. Poster Making Competition - In Observance of the International Day of Democracy 2024
Date: 15 - 16 September 2024
Electoral Literacy Club (ELC) in collaboration with the Department of Political Science organised Poster Making Competition in observance of the International Day of Democracy 2024 on 15th and 16th September 2024. It aimed to foster awareness about Democratic values and principles. Students of various departments submitted numerous innovative posters via google form. The event actively involved the students to understand about the significance of Democracy and being citizens of the state their role in the strengthening of Democracy in modern India.


Inauguration of Electoral Literacy Club and Expert Lecture
Date: 10 September 2024
Electoral Literacy Club has inaugurated on 10th September 2024. P.S. Vastrad IAS (R), State Nodal Officer SVEEP, Karnataka was the chief guest of the programme. Fr. Joshy Mathew, Director, H.R. Department and Head Department of English, Dr. Deekshith Kumar M, Coordinator of ELC, Student coordinators and volunteers of ELC witnessed this programme. The event aimed to enhance electoral awareness and instil the importance of voting among students. P. S. Vastrad provided an in-depth overview of the SVEEP initiative, emphasizing its role in promoting voter education and participation at the grassroots level. He highlighted the significance of voting as a fundamental right and the responsibilities of ELC to ensure voter turnouts in the coming elections.


Skill Training for ELC members
Date: 10 September 2024
Electoral Literacy Club organised Skill Training Sessions for ELC members on 10th September 2024. Dr. Veena K., Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, Government Arts College, Bengaluru. conducted a comprehensive and interactive training session for ELC members. Drawing from her experience as an ELC coordinator, she provided a detailed overview of the club's role in educational institutions, highlighting its importance in fostering electoral awareness. The session aimed to enhance the understanding of the role of Electoral Literacy Club and to provide skill based knowledge for effective engagement.
