Capacity Building Training on Life Skills Education
Date: 08 to 12 August 2024
Kristu Jayanti College hosted a course from August 8th to August 12th, 2024, focused on teaching undergraduate students ten essential life skills crucial for their well-being. These skills are fundamental for managing life's demands and challenges effectively. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the ten core life skills include:
1. Self-awareness involves understanding and recognizing our own identity, including our character, strengths, weaknesses, desires, and dislikes. By developing self-awareness, we become more attuned to our own stress levels and pressures. This awareness is often essential for effective communication and building strong interpersonal relationships, as well as for fostering empathy towards others.
2. Empathy is crucial for building successful relationships with our loved ones and society at large. It involves understanding and caring about other people's needs, desires, and feelings. Empathy allows us to imagine what life is like for another person, enriching our interactions and ensuring they are not just one-sided. Without empathy, our communication can become self-centered and problematic, as it may only reflect our own interests rather than fostering genuine connections.
3. Critical thinking is the ability to analyze information and experiences objectively. This skill helps us evaluate and understand the factors that shape our attitudes and behaviors, such as values, peer pressure, and media influences. By applying critical thinking, we can make more informed decisions and better navigate the various influences affecting our health and well-being.
4. Creative thinking involves approaching situations and problems in innovative ways. It is characterized by four key components:
1. Fluency: The ability to generate a wide range of ideas.
2. Flexibility: The capacity to shift perspectives and adapt to new situations.
3. Originality: The skill to conceive entirely new and unique ideas.
4. Elaboration: The process of expanding on and developing existing ideas further.
Together, these elements enable us to think creatively and find novel solutions to challenges.
5. Decision-making enables us to address and manage choices in a constructive manner, which can significantly impact our health. It involves actively evaluating various options and understanding the potential effects of each decision. By making informed choices, we can better assess how different actions may influence our well-being and overall health.
6.Problem-solving helps us address and resolve issues constructively, which is crucial for managing stress and preventing physical strain. Unresolved problems can lead to significant mental stress and manifest as physical strain, so effectively tackling these challenges is essential for maintaining overall well-being.
7.Effective communication involves expressing ourselves clearly and appropriately in different cultural and situational contexts. It includes sharing opinions, desires, needs, and fears, and seeking advice when needed. Coping with stress involves identifying stress sources, understanding their effects, and managing them through environmental or lifestyle changes and relaxation techniques. Coping with emotions means recognizing and understanding our own and others' emotions, and responding to them appropriately to avoid negative health impacts from intense emotions like anger or sadness.
8.Interpersonal relationship skills enable us to interact positively with others, fostering meaningful and supportive connections. This includes forming and maintaining friendly relationships, which are crucial for mental and social well-being, nurturing positive family relationships for social support, and ending relationships in a constructive manner when needed.
9. Coping with stress is crucial, as stress is linked to up to 95% of diseases. Negative beliefs like “I’m not good enough” can contribute to illness. Our beliefs are stored in the cell membranes, influencing our behavior unconsciously. Scientific research shows that stress is a core factor in physical, mental, and emotional health issues. By becoming aware of and changing unconscious habits, we can reduce stress and reclaim vitality, joy, and well-being.
10. Coping with emotions is key to mental well-being, as our feelings reflect our emotional state. Positive feelings like joy, love, and peace indicate healthy thinking, while fear, anger, and depression suggest negative, dysfunctional thoughts. Becoming aware of this and choosing to eliminate negative thinking can transform our lives. By focusing on appreciation, gratitude, joy, and love, we can positively alter our brain chemistry and enhance our emotional health.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the teachers for their invaluable instruction in life skills, which has greatly benefited us. We also sincerely thank Kristu Jayanti College for organizing this essential training in life skills education.
