Morphology:
  • They are herbaceous perennial plants (30-60cm in height)
  • Leaves: Simple, alternate, ovate with entire margin, Purple – Green, silvery stripes and purple undersides
  • They have creeping shoots
  • Flowers: purple- pink in colour which are periodical throughout the year

Uses in Tradition systems of medicine

  • Used in Ayurveda
  • The plant is used for treatment of coughs, tuberculosis, gastrointestinal disorders and high blood pressure.
  • Leaves are applied to reduce swellings, blood in stools and hemorrhoids.
  • Served herbal tea which provokes menstruation, break the crisis of colitis, flushes gravel out of kidneys and bladder.
  • Decoction of leaves is used for cleansing blood and treating influenza.
  • Leaver are taken orally to treat kidney diseases.
  • In Mexico, decoction of leaves are used as a cold tonic drink.
  • Whole plant is used in the treatment of poisonous snake bite, leucorrhea, urinary infection, nephritis and inflammation.

Active Phytochemicals
1. 3-ecdysone [(22R)-2β,3β,14α,22,25-Pentahydroxy-5β-cholest-7-en-6-one]
This compound revealed significant antiarrythmic activity.

2. Beta–sitosterol(17-(5-Ethyl-6-methylheptan-2-yl)-10,13-dimethyl-2,3,4,7,8,9,11,12,14,15,16,17 dodecahydro-1H-cyclopenta[a]phenanthren-3-ol)
It act as an antioxidant and anticholesteremic agent

3. Succinic acid ( Butanedioic acid)
It has a role as anti – ulcer drug , a radiation protective agent and a micronutrient.

4. 3 beta , 5alpha, 6 beta – trihydroxy stigmast
Along with this tannins, alkaloids, steroids, phenols and terpenoids are also present.
