Morphology:
  • Herb, Erect, succulent
  • Stems and branches angled with watery latex. Leaves along the angles, caducous, leaving scars. Flowers foul smelling.
  • Leaves: attenuate base, asymmetric shape.
  • Locally abundant. Foothills to 1300m among exposed rocks. Indian subcontinent.
  • Flowers: In terminal umbel, purple with cross stripes. Flowering with a peak from March-April.
  • The fruit is a cylindrical seedpod, green, with small, dark spot, hooked at apex and paired. The seed are flattened, broadly margined, with silky, white hairs.

Uses in Tradition systems of medicine

  • The stem juice & mixed with turmeric powder were used to cure stomach disorder & abdominal pains.
  • It was also used for treatment of obesity and diabetes.
  • The stem of the plant burn in direct fire and eaten for five days regularly in empty stomach to cure ulcer problems.
  • Arabic and Indian traditional medicine including treatment of diabetic, cancer, tuberculosis, snake and scorpion bites, skin rashes, scabies, fever and inflammation.
