Title of Talk: Multi-agent Reinforcement Learning for Joint Control of EV-HVAC System with Vehicle-to-Building Supply
Date: 9 th May 2024, 9.30 AM - 11.00 AM
Abstract: Rapid adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) can result in a significant new load for buildings. However, EVs can also help with building energy management because of their demand flexibility and ability to act as buffers through discharging. Specifically, joint control of HVAC and EVs can help reduce building energy costs under a time-of-day electricity pricing regime. This talk will discuss the specifics of this operations problem and present a multi-agent reinforcement learning (RL) method to balance the HVAC and EV charging KPIs (i.e., thermal constraints and vehicle state-of-charge requirements of building users) with opportunistic power routing from vehicle-to-building. Evaluation studies will be presented that will show that, against a model-predictive control (MPC) approach with and without using EVs as buffers, the proposed multi-agent RL scales significantly better in decision time, while being slightly worse in energy costs.
