Connoisseur, the Annual Intra Collegiate Biofest for the UG students of Life Sciences was held on 19th August 2016, Thursday at 9.30 a.m. in Mini auditorium II of UG Block. The fest provided an amazing platform for students to showcase their various talents and explore the depths of the wonderful world of science. The fest was a critical driver for performance and innovation and made way for young minds to put forth their innovative ideas and perceptions.The fest was inaugurated by the chief guest of the day Mrs.Ramalakshmi Arza, Director, Austin Medical Solutions, Bangalore at 9:30am in the Mini Auditorium II of UG Block. Dr.S.Vijayanand, Faculty Co-ordinator welcomed the gathering. The Presidential address was given by Rev. Fr. Josekutty P.D. Principal, Kristu Jayanti College. He passionately addressed the students encouraging them to never settle for ordinariness while also telling them that the key to success in life was to embrace sportiveness and simplicity by quoting real time examples held at Olympics. The Chief Guest of the day, shared valuable thoughts about the importance of Life Sciences and its application in day today life. She inspired the students to take up science with passion. The Student Co- ordinator for Connoisseur Mr.Arfath Ahmed, proposed the vote of thanks.
The fest was hosted for the first and second year students with a total strength of 120 participants. The students were assigned into 10 teams. The teams were named Helium, Neon, Argon, Krypton, Xenon, Strontium, Titanium, Radon, Scandium, Chromium; named after the elements of the periodic table. The fest spanned a total of 8 days and comprised of a total of 16 events, out of which, 6 new events were introduced this year.
The fest began on the 10th of August, with the Prelims of Bio-shuttle (Aptitude Test) and Quiz which were mandatory for all the students of first and second year. The students who qualified in this round proceeded to the next rounds held on the subsequent days.
The event Logo Designing enabled the students to design a logo on the theme ‘Green India’. the following days, three events were conducted i.e. Turn Coat, Bio-tycoon and Young Scientistout of which Turn Coat and Young Scientist were introduced for the first time.Turn Coat checked the ability of the students to switch between the pros and cons of a given topic within a short span of time.Young Scientist was one of a kind. An event that helped the participants exhibit their scientific curiosity in the form of experiments and ideas of their own.Bio-tycoon was also held that day where the students assumed the post of CEO of the bio-companies chosen by themselves and promoted a product of that company.
Cooking without fire and Treasure Hunt were conducted. About 50 participants took part in the Treasure Hunt. It was quite a fun and exciting day for the participants as well. Vegetable Carving contest helped students put forth their artistic presentation skills.The Crime Scene investigation event sought to bring out the Sherlock Holmes in every participant. In Photography competition the students captured and presented pictures based on the given theme 'Science meets art'.
The most awaited events that were held on the 19th of August, the first was Documentary, wherein, the students helped create awareness on the themes related to health issues, environmental issues and hygiene, through video presentation.The next event 'Quiz' was literally a brain-storm where participants were bombarded with questions on various disciplines of Life Science as well as general knowledge. Five rounds were conducted and students were screened based on their knowledge on various subjects.
The next event, the Lecture Contest was also introduced for the first time wherein students could showcase their oratory skills and fluency in conveying concepts in and understandable manner.Debate was indeed an eye-opener and enabled the students to use critical analysis and reasoning to present their views on the given topic.Simultaneously, the event Role Play was also conducted.The participants brought to life many of the famous scientists by stepping into their shoes, presenting their curiosity and inventions that made them well-known.
Minute to Win Ita competitionwhere selected participants were provided a platform to showcase their various talents within a minute.Bio-shuttle was the last event of the fest, after five rounds of rigorous screening, ten participants were selected. The students were assessed based on their confidence, stress- management, ability to work well in teams, critical thinking and scientific reasoning.
Overall, Connoisseur 2016 proved to be an exciting an empowering experience for all the young minds who actively participated and exhibited their talents. The enthusiasm and active involvement of every member of the Life Science Department helped make this event a Grand Success.
The Valedictory function took place in the Mini-Auditorium II at 4:30 p.m. Rev. Fr. Emmanuel P.J. gave an inspiring and informational talk about how humans have a societal responsibility to make the world a better place and motivated the students to strive for excellence in their future endeavours. The Winners of the various events received Certificates and Prizes. The Student Co – ordinator of Bioventura, Ms.Juby Samuel proposed the vote of thanks and the programme concluded with the National Anthem.
