BioVentura, the Annual Intra Collegiate Biofest for the PG students of Life Sciences was held on 19th August 2016, Thursday at 9.30 a.m. in Mini auditorium II of UG Block. The fest provided an amazing platform for students to showcase their various talents and explore the depths of the wonderful world of science. The fest was a critical driver for performance and innovation and made way for young minds to put forth their innovative ideas and perceptions.The fest was inaugurated by the chief guest of the day Mrs.Ramalakshmi Arza, Director, Austin Medical Solutions, Bangalore at 9:30am in the Mini Auditorium II of UG Block. Dr.S.Vijayanand, Faculty Co-ordinator welcomed the gathering. The Presidential address was given by Rev. Fr. Josekutty P.D. Principal, Kristu Jayanti College. He passionately addressed the students encouraging them to never settle for ordinariness while also telling them that the key to success in life was to embrace sportiveness and simplicity by quoting real time examples held at Olympics. The Chief Guest of the day, shared valuable thoughts about the importance of Life Sciences and its application in day today life. She inspired the students to take up science with passion. The Student Co- ordinator for Connoisseur Mr.Arfath Ahmed, proposed the vote of thanks.
36 participants were divided into 6 groups, holding the names of 6 different Antibiotics namely- Ampicillin, Tetracycline, Cephalosporin, Vancomycin, penicillin& Kanamycin.
Students participated in all the events with lot of enthusiasm & exhibited team spirit.Bioventura this academic year featured two new events which are Nutri choice & Bio-journalism. And so a total of 9 events were organized as a part of Bioventura.
The first event Transcript-Decoding the sequence. Ideas created by teams are definitely larger in number than those created by an individual. Hence the probability of discovering a winning idea is huge. Transcript makes way for thinking out of the box. Problem solving and intellectual thinking along with team work was assessed & boosted by this event.The participants performed in pairs & were faced with on spot, tune bound challenges & tasks. The tasks included puzzles related to life sciences and had a total 3 rounds. The teams were then judged based on team work & time taken.
Turncoat- The event was a relatively formidable task stimulating the minds of its participants, it aimed at testing their capability in rapidly shifting between the pros and cons of a particular life science related topic.The event X-files or forensic science was then conducted. They were then judged based on their efficiency of solving problems under time bound situations. Most problems require a creative session to be solved effectively. Therefore teams are most fit to generate ideas through brainstorming.
Chrome-X -the poster making aimed at testing technical knowledge put forth in creativity. The themeof this event was,'Science 2050'. The theme was provided on the spot & was individual. Students were asked to prepare posters based on the given theme within a given time. Creativity, Relevance & appearance were the criterion used for judging this event. Cinethesis drives its participants to push themselves to the edge by focusing on their ability to convey diligently a particular phenomenon, experiment or biological process by means of a video presentation. They were judged based on criteria like execution, performance and content.
The next event wasReflex- The quiz was aimed at igniting young minds to look beyond their textual knowledge and establish a relationship between theory and application of various concepts. It also aided in better organization of knowledge by helping the brains clustered material to allow better retrieval. This event had 4 rounds and a total of 6 teams participating in it. All the teams participated with great enthusiasm & coordination. It was truly a mind boggling session.The event Biocraftwas conducted in order for the participants to use their sense of innovation to transform anything of no value to something aesthetic educational, creative and appealing.
Nutri choice- This was a challenging event wherein the participants were tested in their levels of creativity in putting edible ingredients together to make a complete aesthetic dish under timed conditions.The last event was Bio-Journalism; this event was focused on bridging the gap between science & Journalism. It requires the participants to convey a scientific discovery or mishap in an innovative realistic manner.The Valedictory function took place in the Mini-Auditorium II at 4:30 p.m Rev. Fr. Emmanuel P.J. gave an inspiring and informational talk about how humans have a societal responsibility to make the world a better place and motivated the students to strive for excellence in their future endeavours. The Winners of the various events were announced in the Valedictory program and the Certificates and Prizes were also distributed. The StudentCo - Ordinator Ms. Juby Samuel proposed the vote of thanks and the programme concluded with the National Anthem.
Overall Bioventura was truly successful in evoking a sense of intellectual thinking. Team spirit, innovation, creativity & leadership skills.
